    The one picture that was used depicting the Civil War was actually a photo taken after the Battle of the "Cornfield" . The white building was actually actually a church and was used as a makeshift hospital after the battle. My husband's mother's family were members of that church. I ama docent at Glenmore Mansion and am honored to help preserve it and it's history. Also my great grandfather and 2nd great grandfather (father and son) were in a Tennessee Union Unit and were present at the Battle of Mossy Creek. My family now live on part of the battlefield.. actually closer to Carson Newman University where the Union forces would have gathered at the beginning of the battle. Mossy Creek is less than 300 feet from our front door.

      Let's don't forget that when Tennessee seceded from the Union, East Tennessee seceded from its state. To a great degree, that part of the Confederacy was a hotbed of Union sentiment with many crying "rich man's war, poor man's fight" and blaming the numerous slaves held in other places for causing the war.

      Yes, so true, Deborah. BTW, my middle name is Deborah. Boldt Castle, located on Heart Island in the Thousand Islands, is another one of those oh so sad stories. I took the tour twice and although it is being renovated to absolute perfection, you can sense that it was never infused with the love George Boldt had for his wife as she passed away before its completion. In his immense grief, he abandoned it. Hearts are carved in stone and in wood throughout the castle and the property and the sense of loss is felt.

    I don't know why I remember such things, but in the 1980's Gerald McRany stared in a series named "Promise Land". There was an episode featuring guest Cloris Leachman whom the family was visiting and they stayed in her huge Victorian home. From the thumbnail through the opening and the entire video I am convinced that the CBS network crew used this marvelous home for that episode! I remember thinking back then while watching "where do they find these places?"

    There's a beautiful old Mansion in Kingsport on the river, Rotherwood Mansion, that's got a long and interesting history. East Tennessee always seemed the middle of nowhere when I compared it to what I saw on tv when I was a kid, but after learning some history of it as I got older, I wouldn't live anywhere else I don't think

    Still curious as to how the mansion got the name Glenmore.
    And when did the town become Jefferson City instead of Mossy Creek.

    • @TheAppalachianStoryteller
      @TheAppalachianStoryteller  2 роки тому +16

      Hi Marilyn, The Mansion was named "The Oaks" by the original owners, The Branner Family. When Milton Jarnigan purchased it, he was on his third marriage. During his first marriage as a young man, his first born son named Glenmore died. Years later, when he purchased the home he renamed it to honor his son. regarding Jefferson City, its a bit more complicated. You see, Mossy Creek was a small community. Jefferson City was created when Mossy Creek and a couple other communities merged to create one city- Jefferson City.

    But the widow didn't live there all alone with only her memories. She opened it as a school for young ladies. She had the attention, laughter and enthusiasm of young women through her house, and perhaps that's why she chose that kind of school to run. She could fondly remember her own children every time she heard giggling in the drawing room or feet on the stairways.
