I have watched a few videos on wisteria pruning but this has to be the best one. You are clear and precise with your explanation and you get to the point. Thank you 😊
Thanks for this video. Not only have you helped me with my wisteria pruning but you've also helped me with my climbing rose which has a habit of growing the wrong way, the steering wheel description has helped massively. Thank you!
Thank you for your video ! I planted two wisterias about three years ago on a metal arbor against a brick wall. Not really knowing how to prune, I gave it a go and now have a smorgasbord of vines shooting out every which way! I really liked the photo you showed with your cute little girl and the blooms in the all their splendor! Wow! Absolutely beautiful! You’ve inspired me to do likewise.
This was absolutely informative! We just bought a house with a very substantial wisteria tree on it and I’m looking forward to applying the knowledge you shared! Thank you!

Hi, thank you for that very nice and simple to understand videos about how to prune wisteria. I have at home 6 or 7 year old, very slow growing one and we didn´t see any flower yet. Last year I use this pruning style as on this video and I´m waiting if we will get our first flowers or not.
Super glad you posted this! I moved last summer to a house with crazy overgrown wisteria and am hoping to get it under control early rather than cutting back tons of vines in the summer like last year
@@TheFullyChargedGardener The last owner of the house was an elderly guy so I can hardly fault him for it. Hopefully we'll get more blooms and controllable growth going
@@TinyScorpion44 Don’t be afraid to be a little cruel to it this year, to get it back to a manageable structure. It might mean sacrificing a few flowers this year - But it will pay off in years to come 😀
Thanks for the lovely response! A big hello from sunny Melbourne. Since you invited questions.....having just put my wisteria in (see below), it's a very young plant. (in the ground for a year and this is its first growing season). How much pruning should I do, given I want to train it 6 meters or so along the front of my verandah? I'm thinking that for the next few seasons I'll let it grow and just shape it for length and position, and get into the strict flower pruning when its, say, 4 years old (??) What do you think? Any advice??
December here in Australia, so I'm about to do the Summer prune of an old and vigorous wisteria that is in danger of throttling my neighbour's mango tree - and my chimney. Thanks so much for your videos - they have helped my wisteria achieve the most wonderful shape and flowers,. Wish I could send pictures!
fine advice on how to prune thank you...could you do a video on how to make a wisteria tree..i'm having a go myself using some long stems and ive wound them around each other anti clockwise...cross fingers.
Thank you for a great series of videos on Wisteria. I am to plant a new one to train under a window and then up on the other side. Spacing the wires a foot apart and giving some clearance for the the windowsill I probably can only feed two wires for support, should this be enough?
Thanks a lot for the video. It's very helpful. We're in Australia, so winter is July/Aug. But we just moved into a house with a pergola with what looked like a dead plant on top of it. I didn't know until it bloomed beautifully in Spring, and my little daughter said it might be Wisteria. She recognized it from Anime series she's following. I can't wait to do a summer prune shortly and following it up with the winter prune. The Wisteria looks like it's fully established. I have couple of questions: - Do we need to give it some kind of fertilizer, and if we do what kind? - There are lots of what looks like air root coming down from the plan, can I trim them also? and how far back? Thanks a lot again for a very helpful instruction.
I love your video. I didn't prune my Wisteria at the end of last summer. 😢 I live in Ontario, Canada and our winter has been crazy. It's been warmer than any other I can remember. I've been waiting for a real cold snap but it's getting warmer every week. We are having 11⁰ a couple of days this week. The nights are still pretty cold. Firstly, am I too late to prune, and should I prune back to the second set of buds or go easier on it? Thank you. 😊😊😊
I have just seen your video and found it very helpful. We are in winter in Australia. My wisteria has grown very high over the pergola with the flowers, then leaves providing great shade in summer. Do you have advice how to cut back the long limbs(which I let grow too high) so the flowering will be closer to the pergola. I have to get an arborist with a tall ladder to prune the wisteria. Thank you.
Wisteria is pretty tough. When you do your next winter prune, cut back any growth that has gotten too high back to 3-5 buds from the main stem. hope this is helpful. Thank you for watching.
My wisteria bloom for the first time. It's year 3 and I'm chuffed to bits. I missed the winter pruning. Gutted about that but il be sure to look after it correctly moving forward. Very informative video. My wisteria is running around the top of a fence up a trellis but I'm unsure how to encourage shoots lower down the stem if anyone can help? I can see the odd shoot coming through but nothing to shout about.
Thank you so much for this series. I have planted several ( my nan had a lovely one so a special plant for me!) but have been very nervous as to what to do with them. I do have a question if you didn't mind: as they are young plants and are mostly a strong upright ( bought spiralled up a cane) with just a few thin shoots as horizonatals, do I still prune those shoots back to 2/3 buds? Will they then continue to sprout out and eventually form the strong horizontal branches or do I leave them alone for a while? Thanks
Hi, If you want to train the side shoots then don’t prune them off. Let them grow out and tie them to supports as they grow. Once they have reached the desired length, then cut them. This will then encourage side shoots along those laterally trained stems. I hope this is helpful.
Thats really helpful thanks! Will have a good look and figure out where I want them trained to. So helpful, brilliant videos and really appreciate you taking the time to answer questions too. I'll definitely be looking at more videos! 😁👍
Definitely looking forward to a more heavy pruning of wysteria video. Definitely needed for smaller trellised home garden or front garden areas, is this something thats in the works? Cheers 😁
Hi, I am actually on the hunt for an out of control wisteria, so that I can film a hard prune. in the meantime, have you seen this video? ua-cam.com/video/9S_cMxt-etk/v-deo.html thank you for watching.
Hi. I have a wisteria that hasn't been pruned for years. It has a free shape but has several large 25mm plus branches coming from the bottom going to the right and they are all twisted together. Can I cut a few of these off from the bottom without damaging the plant?
I am planning on making a video about training a newly planted wisteria. But it really is very simple. Basically you just tie in any growth you want to keep, to create your main framework. Then you simply remove all other growth back to 3-5 buds to create those flowering spurs. I will make a video on this later in the year. Thank you for watching 😀
@@TheFullyChargedGardener that would be great, I am very much looking forward to it! I watched all of your wisteria pruning videos but it all builds on already having a structure. But how to get that structure would be my main concern when establishing my first wisteria plant. I will be keeping an eye out on your channel! 🙂
Which is best please - to thread the growth behind the wires or tie them onto the front of the wire? Wondering about the branches growing around the wires.
When I tie in to a structure, is it ok to use string or garden velcro? Will it restrict the growth thickness wise? Also any tips for growing wisteria in a pot? Great video! Thanks
It is perfectly fine to use string or garden velcro as these will not restrict the plant from growing. When it comes to growing wisteria in a pot one key thing is to make sure you keep it watered during dry periods and don’t allow the plant to dry out. But also make sure there is good drainage, so it doesn’t become waterlogged.
Hello, just planted my first Wisteria as a total newbie in the garden. Can you explain me how to guide him (which branches) the best way over a pergola with 2 horizontal beams and 7 vertical. Thank you very much for your guidance. Friendly regards Nathalie
The key is getting the plant to go where you want it as early as possible. At this Early stage, pick the directions you want the plant to go - one those lengths of growth, do not prune, just tie them in as they grow. One you have those initials leaders established, you can prune back any side shoots to 3-5 buds. I hope this is helpful. Thank you for watching 😀
@@TheFullyChargedGardener I think I got it. In case I get mixed up I you will hear me again. 😁😉 Your videos are the first where I actually understand what to do. So yes it's been very helpful. You can start training it straight away. Tie in any growth that you want to form the main structure of the plant and continue to tie in that growth throughout the summer. Hope this is helpful. And then you for watching.
I have just acquired a very unkempt but mature 50+ year olds wisteria with my new house. Coincidently it managed to pull down its frame shortly after we moved in. So my question is, will it tolerate a super heavy prune as I try and untangle some of the mess and focus on the long mature branches or should I just tie it to the frame and hope for the best? I am a bit concerned any ties in future will be torn down anyway with the weight.
