This is an excellent video. That glass coffin was unusual. How old is this cemetery? Do most Italians have mausoleums or crypts rather than burials in the ground?
The Cemetery of Poggioreale is one of the major cemeteries in Naples, Italy. It is also known as Camposanto Nuovo, to distinguish it from Camposanto Vecchio, which is now known as Cemetery of the 366 Fossae. It is bordered by the Largo Santa Maria del Pianto, Via del Riposo, Via Santa Maria del Pianto, and via nuova Poggioreale, and is built upon the ruins of Alphonso II's Villa Poggio Reale. Main entrance. Until the 18th century most funeral monuments were located inside churches, closer to the divine air, and where they could either buy a generation of prayer, or at least be entombed within earshot of genuflecting masses, so as to be lifted into heaven by their overhead chants. As churches became crowded with tombs, this open air monumental cemetery allowed noble families to build private chapels and crypts in a slightly more secular location, on the southern side of the hill of Poggioreale. The cemetery was begun during the Napoleonic occupation, and remodelled in 1836-1837. The layout is that of a garden. At the upper end is a Neoclassic church with a Pieta by Gennaro Cali, in its tribune; and behind a large oblong square, surrounded by a portico of fluted Doric columns, out of which open 102 proprietary chapels, beneath each of which are the family vaults of the owners. The colossal, nondenominational figure of Religion in the centre of the quadrangle is by Tito Angelini. Most of the vaults are occupied by subscription to confraternities, or burial clubs.[1] Those who cannot afford to pay for their own graves are interred without coffins in another part of the grounds, as in the "Cemetery of the 366 Fossae"; but as the fee is small, not more than half-a-dozen bodies are deposited during the three days each pit remains open. At the southwest extremity is a space set aside for notable Neapolitans: a Quadrato degli uomini illustri (Quadrangle for illustrious men). Also adjacent are 19th-century Protestant and Jewish cemeteries of Naples. Among those buried here are: Benedetto Croce, philosopher and politician (tomb in the immediate vicinity of the entrance)Salvatore Di Giacomo, poet and writerRaffaele Viviani, playwrightBenedetto Cairoli politicianE. Hi Dan! Thank you for bringing these beautiful places to those of us who can't travel. In general a snakes mouth will tell you if it is poisonous. A more pointed nose is poisonous and a rounder nose is not. ❤
I wish you would show more of the dates of some of these, so. We know like when the first person was buried if there are dates. I would be fascinated to see that.
This cemetery totally amazes me! I can't believe how many people are piled up in there! It's a shame everything is crumbling away. Thankfully you have amazing footage of it before it's totally gone! The architecture on some of these graves really shows who had money and who didn't. The iron work on the gates are from great craftsmen too. I see some graves with several bodies inside of them. I did read that the mob stash dead bodies in with others to hide them! Have you seen any crazy stuff in the central town? Stay safe!
At 04:55 you have such a beautiful panorama of the area! The glass coffins were not too popular after a period of time.... As a snake lover, those were beautiful black snakes! They could have been one of a few types, and the only way to know what they are is to pick it up and see if it bites you, (JOKE!!), but I suspect it is a black rat snake. Most will try to escape without a fight, very few will stand their ground. I am loving the videos! Great work!

This cemetery was first built in the 1800s. No, most ppl in italy have normal graves
I need a T-shirt with that bat motif on there at that one mausoleum. The flying hour glass too. Those were really cool!
Thanks!
Thank you back!
Most of the vaults are occupied by subscription to confraternities, or burial clubs.[1]
Those who cannot afford to pay for their own graves are interred without coffins in another part of the grounds, as in the "Cemetery of the 366 Fossae"; but as the fee is small, not more than half-a-dozen bodies are deposited during the three days each pit remains open. At the southwest extremity is a space set aside for notable Neapolitans: a Quadrato degli uomini illustri (Quadrangle for illustrious men). Also adjacent are 19th-century Protestant and Jewish cemeteries of Naples.
Among those buried here are:
Benedetto Croce, philosopher and politician (tomb in the immediate vicinity of the entrance)Salvatore Di Giacomo, poet and writerRaffaele Viviani, playwrightBenedetto Cairoli politicianE. A. It would be interesting to track down the family homes for some of these dead folks.. I have the feeling the dead have better housing than the living. I KNOW their mausoleums are bigger than my apartment!
Come on! Utube! We want to see the body! Thanks Dan for sharing what you can!
Your videos are always great! How spooky and unique was that glass coffin. Too bad they don't have anyone to take care of the cemetery. Still neat too see.
Thanks Gary, I thought it was unique too until I found another one.
@@deadgoodwalks. I love the light streaming through the window….and the birds…so peaceful! Thank you for this wonderful walk today. ❤
My first thought was the movie "The Omen". Yikes, thankfully no Rottweilers. 😮
Seriously though it is sad to see the disrepair but so much beauty and craftsmanship. Looks like some family still visits and leaves fresh flowers. 👍👍👍
A really great tour of Naples' old cemetery 👏🏼👏🏼! It's so good that you are so careful and look after yourself!! Bad incidents can happen very quickly in these old cemeteries!! Thanks for the great tour 🙏! But the snakes, oh God, I would have dropped dead myself because I'm terrified of those slithering monsters 😵💫😱😱👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼! Best wishes from Austria!
Thank you for the great content Dan but don't be afraid of the dead they can't harm you. 🤗
I really wanted to see the dead body in the glass coffin? Stupid UA-cam!
Boobtube censorship is B.S.
The cost to build a mausoleum on the scale of those would be in the millions. They're bigger than houses for the living!
You're Alway's Awesome 💯😎
This cemetery totally amazes me! I can't believe how many people are piled up in there! It's a shame everything is crumbling away. Thankfully you have amazing footage of it before it's totally gone! The architecture on some of these graves really shows who had money and who didn't. The iron work on the gates are from great craftsmen too. I see some graves with several bodies inside of them. I did read that the mob stash dead bodies in with others to hide them! Have you seen any crazy stuff in the central town? Stay safe!
Awww Dan ... You're a pip. If i seen the snakes, I'd be running outta there so fast!! You're a brave soul and we appreciate you giving us a tour.
Francesca Lablache Thalberg died in 1901 I'm wondering if that's her glass coffin? You could slow down a bit and show inscriptions so we can research
😂❤😪 So beautiful.
So sad So creepy.
Thank you for Sharon. I'm sure it was hard for you to walk through that. Cemetery
Great work!
Hire about 300 good, skilled craftsman..It could be brought back to it's original glory..Time to spend some of that Government money 🤑
What a place wow😮 thankyou for sharing❤
What an amazing cemetery. Such a shame it's fallen into such a mess. Thank you for sharing
It's like a secret garden but a historical place where the dead rest
I watched this earlier and before I realised I was lost for a couple of hours in your videos! I had to subscribe. You’re doing a great job. I’m off to watch a few more. 😁
The doors alone are creepy and beautiful at the same time. Love this thanks for sharing👻💀👻
I love it all of this. Thank you for letting us seeing.
5:09 VESUVIUS view! 🤯
6:36 Explaining yet ANOTHE Egyptian-themed tomb in Italy, and right next door...
7:19 ...the ANATRA tomb, featuring that glass coffin. 7:44 SIN-atra? ARTANIS? Incorrupt? Leave that assessment to the Source.
9:58 Interesting!
10:33 to 10:40 cc 'I guess Italy's got snakes.' Italy has SNAKES! 🐍🐍
Good rule of them, where snakes are the norm: they skedaddle at the sound of stomping feet. If you're hiking in snake country, walk SOLID--they will move out of the way. It is when they feel threatened, that they rear up to attack...
12:24 That IS a 'beautiful piece of art' 💓💓
I love ❣️ it. So sad 😭😭 no one has kept the place up 😔
Such a beautiful location in absolute disrepair! It’s such a shame. They should be ashamed of themselves letting their ancestors rot
That's what happens you are dead, your body rots down. Nothing to do with the living
@@Benson...1 I know how decomposition works. I mean rot as in left out like disposed garbage. Unloved, unattended & unforgotten. Nobody should be left in broken exposed coffins!
How can they be ashamed if they aren’t aware? Nobody cares after a generation or two.
@@WaynesPokeWorldThey ought not to have been put there in the first place. Life is for the living. Once you’ve died, you shouldn’t cause additional work for anybody.
When I was little, I thought that the biggest mausoleum in Ross Bay Cemetery was some living person's actual home, or at the very least some extremely lucky kid's palatial playhouse. I couldn't imagine that such a place would be built for someone who wasn't conscious and fully able to appreciate it.
I give you credit Dan walking around in that cemetery with shorts and sneakers on. There are poisonous snakes in Southern Italy especially the Viper, think twice before you go wandering in high grass... Be safe..💛
That well dressed Skellicorpse zombie in the fish tank really freaked you out our kid. Don't worry, you handled it well la. You've just earned your stripes. You're a seasoned dead good cemetery walker now!
The bat on the mausoleum symbolizes death and rebirth.
That was unnerving. It's awful that ther is so much access to that tomb! I'm going to have nightmares...
Fascinating place! Super creepy, too. The snakes are way scarier than the piles of bones. Really wanted to see the guy in the glass coffin, though. How bizarre is that! ☠️😊
