    If I may ask, why is there a small "shim" attached to the 1x4 piece that holds the extension in place? Would the 1x4 directly into the wall and against the jamb not make the jamb sit flush with the drywall?

    • @drwagner14
      @drwagner14 5 місяців тому

      It's for leverage. Notice that the 1x4 is not flush with the wall at 3:22. This block is just pushing against the jamb extension really hard while it's being screwed in. You are right that we want the jamb extensions flush with the drywall when done.

    Great video. Step by step. Close up shots when need. Uses simple and useful techniques (leverage) and not to long. I am a “belt and suspenders” guy. So I will do the exact same just using wood glue and Kreig jig for connecting the corners.

    Sorry I don't understand this, are the jamb extensions cut to the proper size (especially the direction from the person installing the window to the window) before installation? Otherwise, forcing the gap between the extension and the window to be closed will make the extension further into the drywall, how do you install the trim afterward then? Bend one edge of the trim (the edge close to the extension) closer to the extension too?

    Very helpful, thanks for showing how you do this :) Shims weren't working with the windows I'm working on, so this is helpful.

    I’ve never done a jam extension. Are you screwing the extension into the framing surrounding the window?

    • @texascarpenter
      @texascarpenter  Рік тому +1

      No it is being screwed into the wood surround of the window itself. If you have vinyl windows it has to fastened to the trimmer stud..

    On an small 9/16 extension on an exterior door (painted) would you give a tiny offset or no transition to the jamb?
    Thing is it’s a retrofit, I’ve already cut the siding back the 3.75” to allow a 1/4” offset for the exterior trim and got the flashing in can’t make up my mind if I want to take another 1/8” off the siding to allow a transition for the extension.

    To bury the head of the trim screw, did you use a larger bit than the 5/32" bit for the pre drill?

    • @texascarpenter
      @texascarpenter  Рік тому

      No the 5/32” is perfect for shank of the trim head however you want the head of the screw to be able to grab some meat in the wood for holding power without splitting 👍🏼

    What are you screwing into on the edge of the jamb

    • @texascarpenter
      @texascarpenter  Рік тому

      The 2 1/2” GRK screws are fastened while building the extension for additional strength and holding power

    What kind of wood and thickness are you using for the jam extension?

    • @texascarpenter
      @texascarpenter  3 роки тому +1

      Poplar Wood and it’s 3/4” thickness!

    Can that be done on vinyl windows?

    • @texascarpenter
      @texascarpenter  Рік тому

      No. The jamb extensions on vinyl windows need to be nailer to the trimmer stud not the window

      Driving the jamb into the window so it keeps the reveal and pressure so he can screw it in without holding it the whole time
