also I think he licked that one battery cell, I learned that the Nintendo Switch cartridges have a bitter taste from his show lolz he goes around tasting things.
The gamechanger in calculators, to me was, the introduction of the BACKSPACE. So you could correct your input without having to retype everything in the heat of a test situation.
I'd love to see you do something cool with the TI-89. Your previous calculator videos inspired to dig mine out of the closet and put some of my favorite games from my high school days on it.
I had that calculator! I inherited it from my uncle. But as you were unscrewing I saw the CE and I was like, the CE registration wasn’t around in 77/78 when he had that. So I think this is a reissue. Or I have a false memory of his HP calculator. And these buttons are more rounded than i can remember.
They're still making the HP12C. It's used by financial professionals and a lot of finance textbooks use it, so people just keep using it. The new version is emulated in an ARM chip and I think it uses a couple of CR2032s. (Ooops watched a bit farther and you found this out for yourself). They still use the original code and just emulate the old chips so that there is no possibility of a difference in outcome between the old and the new calculators.
You can sometimes fix those adhesive ribbon cables with a clean soldering iron set pretty low so it doesn't melt the plastic but re-heats the glue, run it back and forth over the contacts a few times.
Under the assumption that you will build your own calculator, absolutely remember to put in direction keys, a generic enter, and an escape key! Some way, some reason, you'll want them!
I still have my TI-89 calculator. That thing was awesome. It can do derivatives, integrals and matrix math... it helped a lot in college. I probably passed some exams I wouldn't have otherwise because of that thing.
"A 53 minute mailbag video? Well I guess I can just fast forward through the boring parts." [53 minutes later] "Wow, that was really interesting (and slightly unhinged)".
i had a calculator like that Sharp one. It was one of my many toys (the joy of midwest hand me downs) of course in the hands of a child it wasn't a calculator it was a "time travel device" or a "communicator"
Watch out; Heathkit becomes an addiction. You'll fall in love with their manuals and serviceability. Also, I have a later model weather station. I always meant to try 3-D printing the anemometer which looks identical to yours. Are you going to post the files?
The construction of the Xbox series heatsink/shielding reminds me of the heatsink for the HP 9825... It's pretty impressively built. Honestly... if you ever get a chance to get your hands on an HP 9825, _do so!_ It's such a cool old machine. 16 bit CPU running 10 MHz... in 1976! They put it in something they _called_ a calculator, but the HP 9825 was more akin to a PC. HP 9845 used it as well.
Ragging on The 8-Bit guy! Again! Ben! I'm ashamed! Lol... He should definitely do a Ben Heck rag session (or at least a one liner, followed by a laugh...)
I visualized back in as a kid after cutting 100 yards to save up for the TI-85, that someone at Texas Instruments must have a Scrooge McDuck pool of money somewhere...
Surprised a reed switch was fast enough for an anemometer. Remember reed switches from 1980's burgler alarms & electronic kits. Now they're all but gone.
Hi Ben Long Time subscriber love the channel I have a 486 Dell laptop that when you power it on light comes on for a second then powers off any suggestions on how to fix it?
Even the screen on the iPod Touch is easier to replace than the screen on the TI-83. You might say "But the iPod Touch costs twice as much as the TI-83, so it makes sense that they cheaped out on the display connection!", but I want to remind you that the CPU in the iPod Touch is 4.5 years old, while the CPU in the TI-83 is 45 years old, which makes up for the price difference.
If you drink and drive your an idiot, if you drink, engineer a weather vane and 3D print it..your a flamin’ legend..”fair suck of the sav” that was bloody marvellous to watch mate. I love hearing you ‘mericans butcher our Aussie accent..it’s 😂 hilarious😂
I sent a pretty sweet calculator a while back, did you ever get a chance to check it out? I honestly didn't know how to properly use the thing.... sometimes schools have the best auctions LOL
Ben I have an idea for the broken Ti-83+: make a circuit to convert the LCD paralel connector into a composite TV signal, and 3d print a case for it, so you can have a plug-n-play TV calculator!! Let's take math to the big screen!
I was going to correct you, on your statement, of being in a boat. I recently heard an interview with Gyles Brandreth, who met Prince Philip, who recently died. Gyles told the story where the Prince correct him, that you serve IN a vessel, not ON her. Fun story.
I had a TI-83, I cant remember if it was a plus or not, back in HS that I was able to overclock. I doubled the clock speed to like 3mhz. You should for sure do that mod.
Idea for your programmer calculator, mod the firmware on a ti calculator with flash-able firmware like the ti 83 plus and then 3d print the new key caps.
Only Ti would think a z80 processor device is still worth 100+ bucks. I 95 or 96 I had a 85. I loved putting basic programs on it. It was stolen though.
You keep cackling like that, Vader will show up.. "What is thy bidding, my master?" "Go to Menards, and buy me cheap, crappy electronics!" "Figures. It will be done."
I work for a semiconductor plant that has TI as one if it's customers, I have to deal with them a lot. We are in Scotland, and TI big wigs fkn love golf holidays. I have a cool story... we used to have a Chinese woman in sales, she was at a meeting where the head of quality for TI was showing some pictures in the conference room. Picture appears of the mans beloved dog, to which our colleague comments.... ''Looks delicious''. I'm 100% serious.
Thats fkin awesome i would have been rolling around on the floor 😂😂😂 i was watching goodnight sweetheart last week n it had an apology at the start for views and attitudes reflecting the time of filming and not suitable for some viewers today because of asians eating dogs being involved in the episode i culdnt belive it how much political correctness has gone mad and ruined the world
@@benayers8622 Yeah, totally. It's not even Asian people who get offended by that stuff - it's actual racists who get offended on other peoples behalf.
The TI-89 seems to turn off fine, it just needs a moment. There's a "BUSY" in the lower right corner before it turns off. Maybe it's saving things to memory?
You know what would be awesome if you did, Ben? If you bought a new calculator and made a videogame out of it. Using a better display, of course. Preferably one of those LCDs from Adafruit. I'm thinking something like the Game Gear or a the Nomad. That inadvertently just reminded me of how cool it was sending suggestions to the Ben Heck Show...
😄 and just like Clint LGR that love to smells vintage electronic devices,,,, I had a big brother that also have the same habits,,, he love to smells an old vintage comic books,,,, kind of make me envy looking at him time traveling after sniffing away those ancient paper and tell me the story about the glory of the 80's,,, 😒✨✨🤭
I always feel entertained watching Ben talk to himself and smell calculators.
also I think he licked that one battery cell, I learned that the Nintendo Switch cartridges have a bitter taste from his show lolz he goes around tasting things.
I love how I get most of his references, especially when mimicking other UA-camrs
It's how I know everything is right in this world.
I wouldn't buy used calculators off him. He sniffs the precision out of them.
Ben: "I put a link to his youtube channel below"
Below: "..."
8:00 Confirmed: Ben can tell the manufacturer of a chip by smelling it.
Or.... The letters "HD" on it. #mindBlown
Nah… it’s the smell
Came here to say this, I feel like we need a "Ben Smells the electronic and guesses the year produced" video
and dump its EEPROM by licking it.
To sum up Ben in 3 words: "Insane, but harmless."
Mostly harmless
@@MrJoerT Okay, I can live with that. Insane, but mostly harmless.
It's a good thing I'm not evil because then I would most certainly be dangerous.
@@BenHeckHacks Yeah, I'd say more "Brilliant Mild-Mannered Teddy Bear" than "Dangerously Evil Criminal Mastermind".
Ben is so adorable. He seems just as weird as me. I'm always singing to myself.
53 minutes well spent. You laughing at silly things makes my day a little bit more fun. Looking forward to the next one
That was fun and I'm happy to have gone on this journey.
Ah, another ramble from Uncle Ben. Lovely!
Just for a moment I thought Bud had a friend! Go get him a friend, Ben - you could call it "Bud Lite"
or Miller High Life
Jesus Ben I try to watch these at work. I was laughing so hard they thought I had lost it, LMAO. Thanks for the video.
This is my favorite UA-cam channel. It's something about some old guy with a cat fixing stuff and making himself laugh.
Forgot the plug link to the calculator guy's channel. You made me search for it, you monster!
Where was it? I wanna see ;)
You forgot to share the link as well

No one but Ben could talk about calculators and make it so entertaining.
It’s a great day for retro when Ben, Adrian, Jan, and rest of the gang put out videos. :)
Loved the David impression, I'm sure he feels pretty proud because you really need to focus and think abot how to impersonate him.
👏
Happy birthday mailbag video! Hope to see you again sometime this year
Never thought I would live to see Ben become a paperclip.
A real ragbag of content, truly what UA-cam is made for. Thanks Ben, love your videos.
Watching your shows and catching up during lockdown.
I flinched a little bit, when you shouted not my dremel! Got me scared there...
I feel the urge to send Ben a pic of my hands for an age guess...
Send some feet pics also, just in case. :p~
38..
we should all send him pics of hands to twitter
Not fair, most of his viewers use a LOT of lotion. 😂
I'd love to see you do something cool with the TI-89. Your previous calculator videos inspired to dig mine out of the closet and put some of my favorite games from my high school days on it.
Ben “Beryl Ives” Heck! LoL I’d die for you to sing the entire song on video. LoL 😂
Silver and Gold!
24:18 The answer could be "I'm wasting my time because you're watching, and you're watching because I'm wasting my time".
Those first two calculators look like something my grandmother would have owned. Love them.
The impersonations make it very worth my time
It’s been years but glad to be back to watch Ben!
The Gambler VS 3D printing... Never thought I'd draw that parallel!! A super entertaining video. Can't believe 53 minutes have passed...

Watching Ben trying to understand the lovely 12C is amazing. Btw it is in really good shape, considering that it is one of the older models.
You ask why are we watching this because Ben Heck you're the best. And because no one else can imitate David Jones other than you.
Great to see that orange critter who lives with you.
Awesome video Ben. I think on your calculator you should 'Sinclair it' to reduce cost, and have each button do 6 things, lol.
You know Schlitz is quality because if you drink too much it'll give ya "the schlitz."
it's official, next epic rap battles of history is going to be ben heck vs 8 bit guy with surprising appearance of peri- (and lady-) fractic.

Your recollection of songs and movies is what makes me laugh. Love your technical content, but hey no one else can pull off meatloaf like you ;)
It's funny, that guy can just buy a new wind cup from Heathkit. They don't sell much anymore, but they do sell those.
Oh, but now he has a famous internet wind cup.

The TI-89 works like Mathematica for numerical evaluation. If you want it to show decimals, put a dot after one of the numbers. Like 1/9. or 1./9
