Waylon never was pop country. I get that music evolves, but when you start associating rap beats and lyrics into what they call country today, then you do, in fact, get pop country. The only reason I could see them calling this pop country in that time was maybe because he had just transitioned over from playing with Buddy Holly, which was pop music. I think their definition and today's definition are two completely different things.
Very different, indeed. I think pop country of the past appealed to people who enjoyed rock or else a mellower sound, whereas pop country now just feels artificial and disturbingly formulaic. To illustrate my point, there's Sturgill Simpson, who is willing to experiment but isn't just plain shallow and commercial-friendly. That's what Waylon did for country.
pop has changed definitions over time...... . and i also cant explain EXACTLY whats in my head (never been good at that) but i can tell you that "stop the world" IS!!! pop . "country country" at the time was like porter wagner (but even slower, less drums, ETC) . . a bit thing the "out laws" did was put "rock drums" into their music "country country" doesnt use drums AT ALL!
Waylon is and always will be outlaw country. Nobody will ever raise the mark hoss set.All he endured yet never backed off. True hero 🙌
There are so many phonies in country music today. Waylon was authentic. Great voice and also a great guitarist.
Being 2021, I can relate to this song.
Gosh, that man could sing! You can see the passion and commitment in his face.
Matthew Cuellar here in west texas waylon is king.
1965! My dreams are shattered can't you see! Stop the world and let me off
One of my favorite Waylon songs.
Pop country is definitely defined differently today, we all know Waylon is the granddaddy of Outlaw Country.
Wish the whole show was here.
Marty Stuart opens his shows with a great cover of this song.
The show was called Pop, The Music Explosion. Been looking for it for years.

Quinn McCully But you call this shit we here today pop country right? Typical.
Quinn McCully
Most of the shit we hear today is exactly that. In mainstream country about a good 95% is insincere pop country.
