No matter how many tillers I see, I am still amazed at the tiller man, I know it takes practice to become the tiller driver, but boy would I like to try this one time to see what it takes to become a driver of that section of the truck, excellent video John.
Harold Smuck From first hand experience, it's a blast. It's not as difficult to learn the basics as many would think. Fear and nerves are your biggest enemy, just like driving anything. I will say though, it isn't until you have been driving with someone for a while will you fully enjoy and exploit the benefits of a Tiller. When the Cab driver and Tiller man know each other's style, that's when the real magic happens.
I do have to say, the FDNY has gotten more serious about the designs of their trucks overall. They look more rugged and built like a beast than they ever were before. When I saw they were getting designed with a raised roof, I was blown away.
So does nobody in New York have a legitimate drivers license? In my state you have to learn how to drive to get licensed and these folks show no respect to emergency vehicles.
All across America, some Fire stations have Tiller time. Other stations it seems to be Miller time. Ha Ha. Nice video. I used to watch the Tiller's go by in Philly. Some of greatest operators everywhere.. Some of them are operating with so much grace going through the cities everywhere. Keep up the good work.
At 5.40, ladder 6, the way they took that corner was damm right amazing, especially not seen in the UK, I really love those trucks, am wondering does the tiller man use power steering? Great work Pal. Stay safe
I Remember my Father being a Tiller driver for south Bend Indiana Fire Department and his Truck was either a American La France or Pierce with open cab that was back in the 70s
Great Compilation !! lots of fantastic footage I wonder if the guy in the back wears a seat belt Nah!! thats one hell of a ride. Lots physics/forces going on there
I wish we had those slider doors on our Truck- We have the exact same spec'd Truck, except, for swing tiller doors. Those sliders would help with visibility, for sure...
Apparatus buff in St Paul last 75 yrs...all time fave rigs...#1is seagrave since 1880...#2 favorite all x,t.t.,we had 8 seagrave ladders 1951-1995, #2 100' t.t. 30 yrs service!! @-35° 🥶... thanks 👍
Hi. I have been watching a lot of your videos. I grew up across from the busiest house in Cincinnati. May I ask: Are you a retired fireman, or what was your line of work? What part of New York do you live in? And what is your name? Thanks. (Jerry from Cincinnati)
when the tiller bussin *Edit* around queens, I saw an entire station respond to some fire, but they had an entire station go, from which i saw them drive fast in a highway
I love these tillers! It has two frames like truck and trailer. The front look like a Engine. In Germany we don't have these long and fantastic vehicles. In Germany everyone would love to sit in one of your fire trucks. All those drivers think get out the way with these amazing blazing air horns! I think tiller 40 has the best air horn!! Look at 10:20 ❤️. I would really love to work for the FDNY!
What a pain it would be to have to park those in small city street stations like that. Probably just another day, though. Where I live, we’re supposed to stop our cars for emergency vehicles. Traffic laws in NYC are probably unheard of.
Car at 4:27? One of the largest firetrucks is sitting at the intersection for 5 seconds with lights flashing and siren/horn blaring. I think I will just ignore all that and blast on thru at regular speed. Probably texting I guess. Kudos to the fire truck driver.
Retired firedog from Ohio. I remember back in the '70s that they where trying auto steer back wheels on straight bodied ladder trucks. I wonder what ever came of that idea?
Respect to the max for firefighters themselves. None for management or the union. I was royally screwed by a major Canadian Fire Service years ago when I developed a neurological disorder. No help or assistance at all. Booted out on my ass. Considering neuro-muscular disorders are the charity-of-choice for fire services, never understood what happened to me. To firefighters...never trust your union or management. You too could get a knife in your back. My life was ruined. !
the term tiller is from vessels that had a long arm attached to the rudder of a vessel with and external stern mounted rudder the tillerman is the one who maned it and was called the tillerman
mcaddicts FDNY only requires a firemen to hold a Class D license. Firetrucks are "apparatus" and therefore don't fall under normal government regulations.
Why does it seem like half of NYC have no respect for the emergency vehicle trying to get through? It's like oh year I see that big, red truck with lights flashing everywhere and a siren screaming but I can make it through this traffic light, the next person will probably stop and let them go by safely."
No matter how many tillers I see, I am still amazed at the tiller man, I know it takes practice to become the tiller driver, but boy would I like to try this one time to see what it takes to become a driver of that section of the truck, excellent video John.
I TOTALLY AGREE HAROLD! IT AMAZES ME TOO! THANKS SO MUCH MY FRIEND! ;o)

For the guys operating the tiller, is it on the job training? Or do they take a course to learn?
WELL HUTCH, THEY GO TO THE FDNY CHAUFFEUR TRAINING SCHOOL AT THE FDNY FIRE ACADEMY TO LEARN HOW TO DRIVE THEM! THANKS SO MUCH MY FRIEND! ;o)
They are lucky, mine was OJT. Because I was the shortest and could fit in it
You steer away from obstacles, and follow the cab. When backing you steer opposite.
Mike Smith best dam job on the fire dept....tillering.

3:03 tiller ladder 40 @125.st and Morningside Ave Harlem's finest
YES AND THANKS SO MUCH DEE! ;o)
Back in the 80's and early 90's they had a spare tower ladder at that station numbered tower ladder 116
What were all those people on 6:35 standing there for?
Counting: 34 blinking lights withe, red or orange, which hardly distinct from the yellow turn signal ... and, not to forget, one blue blinking light.
OK.
Make an SFFD video with only tillers... Oh wait the only trucks they have is tillers
MAYBE SOME DAY! HAHA! THANKS SO MUCH.....
i hate that Q-Siren . sounds like a Cat screaming. nothing beats that classic manual Q-Siren
YUP! THANKS! ;o)
I love it
I know im a year late but damn this video blew up
COOL AND THANKS SO MUCH! ;o)
Would the operator need to hold another class of license to drive a tiller vs a regular fire truck?
I BELIEVE MORE TRAINING FOR SURE! THANKS MY FRIEND! ;o)
mcaddicts FDNY only requires a firemen to hold a Class D license. Firetrucks are "apparatus" and therefore don't fall under normal government regulations.
I prefer the rear mount aerial
OK.
What is the tallest tiller FDNY has? We dont have those out here. (not a big city)
I THINK 100 FEET BUT AM NOT ENTIRELY SURE! THANKS SO MUCH MY FRIEND! ;o)
A tiller has 2 drivers the ones without one at the back are tower trucks
OK.
Tiller time!!
YUP.....
Forgive a stupid Dane for asking. What is the advantage of the tiller truck over the ordinary ladder truck? Nice video by the way
FLEXIBILITY AND HEIGHT. THANKS SO MUCH! ;o)
0 fucks given by cyclists. Even towards emergency vehicles. It's kinda funny when they pull out and wait for the guy who put the bay door down :)
YES.....BUT TRY NOT TO CURSE ON HERE AS THERE ARE MANY CHILDREN THAT VISIT MY CHANNEL..... THANKS!
1:36 Was that a PA200 or PA300?
IDK....
The sirens are old in New York by the firetrucks
WELL, NOT MOST OF THEM. THX.
4:50 The tiller is longer in length than the basic ladder truck in the New York Fleet. They managed to fit Ladder 40 in Ladder 4's bay like that?
YES INDEED! THEY SURE MANAGE THAT WELL! THANKS SO MUCH MY FRIEND STEVEN! ;o)
