- I had a few copies of this on old VHS from various sources over the years. Sadly this is the BEST that I could clip together as the tapes are toast. I don't know where this came from, looks like Channel 7 news? if you have any more info, please let me know. Thought you might get a kick out of it. delveintothediv...
Even in this messed up VHS form, this is some brilliant history for the children!
I used to have a Bette website, people used to send me VHS tapes all the time. I found them when I cleaned out some boxes in storage

Yes I'm aware...the vhs tapes degrade overtime, it was the best of the bunch... I did mention that in the description...since it wasn't anywhere on YT I thought perhaps someone might at least find it interesting.
I miss the campyness of yesteryear. we're so careful to be sensitive, which can be good and bad. No one should be made to feel uncomfortable or violated, at the same time it's not healthy to be overly sensitive.

Thanks for posting these great clips..So what if the quality sucks it was the baths not Carnegie Hall. I'm sure Capitol records is still kicking themselves in the ass for not videotaping Judy Garland's legendary Carnegie Hall concert instead of only recording it on vinyl..That should have been a no brainer as tickets her concerts at Carnegie Hall were all sold out!
I went there in 95, my friend enrolled in AMDA the school that's on the ground floor. The building is beautiful... but the tour didn't go to the basement, and they only said it had been a bathhouse, not The Continental Baths, so wasn't till a few years later when I first saw this clip that I realized it. *sigh* wish I'd known, I would have taken better photos. One day I'll get back to NYC...
When they did this documentary - this missed the boat because Barry Manilow had a big part in her success!! If he had not been her Music Director or arrange her songs & produced her first album she would had never been nominated & win the Grammy for Best New Artist, let alone would her album The Divine Miss M have been nominated for a Grammy! She owes him a great deal of thanks!!!!
this is the great thing of You Tube - you can actually find things like this! I've hear about Bette Midler starting out in the bathouses, and here we are! Heard of someone I knew who told me that he once saw his shrink there in a leather thong, but that's another story......
I had a good friend who got in to AMDA (school for drama/ musical theatre) and I went when we moved her down to NY. I had no idea til I got home and years later saw this... that the school is in the same building. The tour guide told us there used to be a bathhouse there but he didn't say it was the Continental . So I got a tour and didn't know it lol

It was only one bathhouse - the Continental Baths.
