She needs to thank Barry Manilow everyday for her career! If he hadn’t been her MD & arrange ALL her songs while at the Continental Baths she would’ve never gotten a recording contract! When they first tried recording the album The Divine Miss M, said they didn’t need his arrangements but when the record heads heard the album without his arrangements said Bette didn’t sound anything like the artist they signed. The result was to call Manilow ask him to produce her album, he brought his arrangements with him! The result a Grammy nominated album & she won the Grammy for Best New Artist! She owes her career to Barry Manilow!!
Don't think it is that simple. Barry Manilow was her piano accompaniest at the Continental Baths and, yes, did produce her first album. But, he was not yet a mega star either. They helped each other. His big break came when he teamed up with Bette Midler for a nightclub act, leading to solo hits like "Mandy" (1974), "I Write the Songs" (1975) and "Can't Smile Without You" (1978).
@@sbalman I think it is that simply- the hit songs that got Bette a record contract were all arranged by Barry because he was not just her piano accompanist but her Musical Director!!! When she first did her album they didn’t use his arrangements & the Record Label said the album sucked. They contacted Barry & he brought his arrangements - the results were he produced her Grammy nominated album & she won the Grammy for Best New Artist. Also Bette had NOTHING to do with Barry getting a recording contract. He was offered a recording deal with Bell records because they heard his demos, they didn’t even know he was Bette’s MD! Bell’s interest in Barry didn’t have anything to do with his association with Bette because they didn’t know it existed, in fact they didn’t even know who Bette was!! This all happened when Bette was on vacation in Hawaii while on a break from touring. Yes, he did open her second act (which was approximately 2 years before Mandy) while she was on tour but it was a compromise, since Barry had promised Bell Records that was going to do his own tour to promote his first album but Bette really wanted him to be her MD thus the comprise was struck (Bell Records didn’t like the compromise). In addition, Bette told Barry not to sing Could It Be Magic while opening for her because it would bore the audience!! Well, he played it one night he got his first standing ovation!! He also left her after completion of this tour ! Barry has also produced several later albums for her that were certified gold. Hopefully, you understand that Bette had no hand in Barry being a star - in fact when he told her he got a recording contact she said doing what- he said singing, she said you don’t sing! He said will Bell thinks I do, so I do now!! However, if it weren’t for Barry - Bette wouldn’t have achieved the success she enjoys!! Not trying to lecture but I thought I’d set the record straight- since I’m assuming you aren’t a Fanilow you weren’t aware of the true back story, hopefully this information is enlightening!!
You know Bette Fans , I still Can't believe that this woman Bette Midler rubbed her feet next to me , along with other things , Ask her ? maybe she still remembers ! From the guy Bette Midler rubbed her feet so close too....
Great showmanship here from all concerned , including the back up singers . Bette really knows how to create that energy together with Jerry Lee, who was a master at it . HOWEVER.........JERRY LEE LEWIS COULD NOT SING, and good old Bette was mediocre in the vocals department at best . That's not to say this wasn't completely entertaining , ..it was without a doubt , no two ways a bout it . Its not surprising Jerry Lee was always envious of Elvis , and Bette Midler while jealous of no one , was carried through her performances by sheer exuberance and personality . Jerry was a great piano player, and together here they were great fun ., but good singers or great vocalists they were not . Bette Midler actually got a little better vocally as she got older and had excellent musical arrangements given to her . Now, having said all that I have to conclude by also saying once again this was a terrific show which I thoroughly enjoyed . Thank you for the video .
Are you serious about jerry lee ???? He can't sing ???? Jerry lee ??? He is one of the most underrated vocalists ever. ua-cam.com/video/UIbPQFnPidk/v-deo.html take a listen to that song and then dare to tell me that Jery couldn't sing. Crazy comment
Transitioning into Bette midler. Joe Layton, Toni basil, Bruce vilanch, theater costumes and sets, and no Barry to guide her singing all helped Bette midler murder the divine miss m, who is really the legend, not Bette midler. Unfortunately, miss m was short lived. Midler didn't have it on the mike Douglas show. I really think it was Jerry blatt, Bill Hennessy, and Barry's brilliance that created the divine miss m. Too bad Bette had to kill her off.
Joseph Haynes, She isn't against gay marriage. You're thinking about that clip on Larry King in 1995 that has been interpreted wrong since it aired. She basically said she’d have to look more into it because she didn't even know it was a thing. She's literally been around gays most of her life. She said those around her had never even broached the subject with her. She said all they talked about who they were dating or him how many guys they slept with. So she was taken aback that this was real. So she said she'd need tine to learn more about it and research it before she could make an informed decision. I thought that response was great.Shs just didn't want to make a rash decision, because nobody told her that was a thing. I knew she would get it fast and she did. At that point in history. most of the People were not for it. Always research before you spread.false stories Pay attention to nuance and context. But you'll never find a quote where she says that
She noted that her lesbian friends would meet a girl, share a Coke together, and become "mates for life" so she was all kinds of excited about lesbian marriage!

She's amazing!
Talented back-up singers. The tall one in the middle was Katy Sagal better known as Peg Bundy.
Actually it is Ula Hedwig, but they did looka lot alike.
Seen the tag Bette Midler and Jerry Lee Lewis on the same stage. Had to click!

Ron Zack no way!
Forget Peggy Bundy. I can remember when Barry Manilow was her piano player.
Is that Katey Sagal in the middle of the back-up singers?
steveknows62 No,it’s Ula Hedwig. Katey Sagal came along a couple of years later.
View From A Broad has a pic of Katey Sagal in it (In Bette's book)
Can I keep her?
The backup singer in the middle, isn't that Steve Rhodes?
“Whole lotta screechin’’ goin’ on”
Is it just me, or does that middle backup singer look like Cher?
It's Katie Sagal

And one of the black women became a Judge and the other a Senator or Congresswoman.
And Sharon Redd, passed away. May she r.i.p.
