  • Here I take a look at 3 popular aviation headsets. I realize that I have an older Bose headset, but I have lots of time with the A-20. Let me know what you think!

Great review! Most others are biased towards a certain brand. You’ve certainly kept an open mind. Thank you.

I use the DC One X. Like them a lot. I use them in GA. When the ANR is off its very noticeable. They are very comfortable. I considered LightSpeed Zulus because my CFI loved them.

You’re spot-on. I flew with the A20 once. It’s a head-clamp. Brains in a vice. Bought a DC-One-X. No regrets. I also have three old-school H-10-13XL’s and all three are still going strong!

Just in case you didn’t know, that Bose headset you showcase in the video is a Bose X (first gen) not an A20. I’m no Bose fanboy, but my X went 13 years with no hiccups when I was flying the EMB 145 and that was a noisy place to work. Just swap out the pads when they get flat and that’s the only maintenance I’ve ever done. I now use the A20 in the 737 and it has 6 years of flawless service. The Bluetooth feature is fantastic for use with the company iPad when I need to call dispatch. The only place neither of them work well is in my Pitts - just too noisy and not enough passive noise reduction with those smaller earcups. Your other choices are solid but I think your experience with Bose is an outlier. FWIW

Good to know. We do have A-20’s in the airplane, but I guess I did grab an older set for the video. I was just flying with a guy yesterday with modern A-20’s and we had to listen to his static all the way from Jamaica to ORD. I know that there is always personal preference and many people love Bose. Thanks for the feedback!

He is comparing the headsets with a 25 year old first generation Bose. I can tell you from experience, the A20s are bullet proof. I wanted to like the Zulu light speeds, but the had the same problem as every other headset I have owned. Their boom/mic eventually gets weak and falls away from your mouth. Bose is the only headset I’ve ever owned, that the mic stays in place after hours and hours of use.
I honestly wish another company could make a durable, solid noise cancelling headset, but for now I guess we are stuck with Bose.

@@22Picks No. I was talking about A20's. I just grabbed the wrong pair out of the plane. They are all pretty uncomfortable and need a lot of attention to keep them working right.

I wonder what make a more or less effective noise cancelling performance...is it the sealing or the Emitting frequency. I know for sure long hair makes the pad harder to seal so I welcome the harder squeeze. Not comfy after a long flight bit I don't do those with my bladder/ prostate combo anyways 😅
Thanks for the video and the flag looks good on the wall there😊

As a pilot who looks to take to the skies again after a few decades, deciding on a headset is a little tougher when unable to try on for fit and how they sound to my ears. I'm sure the noise cancelling is slightly different for each head shape. I've had the opportunity to try the A20's in a 172, pretty good, but I have nothing to compare them to. Anyway, not sure the extra $200 premium for the Bose makes them $200 better than the Lightspeeds or DC X One's. All that really matter is, I can hear ATC, and they can hear me clearly.

I’ve owned the Bose A20 for 13 years. The audio is crystal clear, the cables are intact, and it is simply functioning like the first day.

My Bose A20 didn’t make it 2 years. Honestly I feel like buying the top of the line light speed zulu headset But when I get to the airlines apparently you cannot use them so the david clark dc one x is going to be my next headset. It is ridiculous how expensive they are and how easy they break. I am very careful with the bose and for this to happen is just awful and I wont buy another aviation headset from them.

Very misleading. The Bose head set X in this review was released in 1998, they are not the A20s 😂. Not a very fair review, considering they are 25 years old and now have 2 new generations, including the newest one that was released at the time of this video. I hate Bose, but you got to do a fair comparison.

I grabbed the wrong pair out of the plane, but rest assured, I was talking about the A20. They feel like head clamps and the guys I fly with that love them usually have to send them in every so often to get the wires worked on.
