Well done! I have installed most of what you’ve explained, but I haven’t moved away from Windows Media Center yet. It looks like it’s time to make the move! Thank you for being the champion of consumer empowerment!!!
I've been using the HDHR Prime since your original video on it. Has saved me well over $1300 in box fees. Plex being able to use it now, including being able to stream live TV from my own house is awesome and what finally pushed me to get a Plex Pass. Then they ruined the UI. So giving them a little bit of time before switching to Emby, which has the same features now without having to pay extra. But just wanted to thank you for the original video about the Prime.
I'm a cable guy and love staying on the edge of this cord cutting technology (I always tell people, if I didn't get it for free, I know how to get what I want to watch. The consumer wins when it comes to all this competition with content). I just wanted to mention that we've been using MoCA here since 2009 for our whole-house DVR service as well as our APs (I'm currently using both in my house now. Including that Actiontech AP). It's definitely useful technology. I just want to make clear that the importance of properly made fittings/connectors. There are also terminators/filters that help "contain" the signal. There are cable length limitations. It's one thing if it's just a closed system like the customer doesn't have cable or satellite, but you have to get creative if there is more running on that one coax line. As always, love the show! Looking forward to the MoCA episode.
Bandwidth is why this helps: Your Cat5 Ethernet home switches about a Gigabit/sec. Internally huge files and video flash across my nodes in device bottleneck limited speeds - nary a lag noticeable. However, a household with more than one user but only a DSL connection such as mine begins to buffer when AmazonFireStick and another device is also streaming 4K fullscreen UA-cam at the same time. But if sending , that's beyond the DSL supply bottleneck capability, as upload is only 1/4 of my download speed. Say I host a reunion, publish my WiFi, and nobody's talkin', they're all like tik-tokin, tweetin, streamin, as if their life Meta-ed - a real buffer crawl fest party foul. But anyone watching the CW, ABC, Fox and PBS on that same network is of superior signal, subscribe to the guide and set a recurring weeks worth of times to record as well or save that fee and just record on the day through my Quatro-Pro. As a legacy home build I've got CoAxial and Cat5 in every room, Most live local broadcast ATSC is still viewed on legacy TVs in those rooms, as a mater of habit mostly - HDHomeRun is superfluous for just such equipment which was built when network access involved a phone handset stuffed into acoustic cups . WiFi a/n/g in the house bears mobilephones|datapads & laptops for access to premium programming via DSL - so HDHomeRun Quatro extends their access to ATSC local broadcast as well, replacing a basic cable subscription to watch or record ATSC local broadcast with each datapad. Misconception: HDHomeRunQuatro is not a game or console, it is a substitute for set-top-box, with STB rental fees, containing several ATSC tuners come accessible and assignable injected into your network, which facilitates source for your home video server, which you may not need or can add later. PadTV and other such expensive discreet individualized tuners for each node device are made un-necceessary with HDHomeRun. If your TV rig to watch xfinity has picture in picture, you are covered, that's two broadcast ATSC over the air simultaneous live programs in your broadcast coverage area - you can amplify your antenna for more channels and none of this applies to your self-centered peabrain because you can't understand what doesn't apply to you directly. What do you use to record channel 5? VHS? How does your rig TiVo? I can pause the Stuper-Bowl while I leak or take command of instant replay of live broadcasts. I came to Silicon Dust solutions while searching to replace 10 high stack of DVD/VHS combo recorders. What a savings too! At $300 each device I could record as many channels as I had devices. Virtualize the hardware and its $50/channel of equip. which I now own forever and files I can burn to a USB3 BluRay/DVD raw or edited. No more patchbay "output:to Preview&VCR.B {sources- stack, tape, Camera 2, VCR.A} " S-video switches. Culminate it all into digital files on terabyte drives - or just not care about all that archiving and leisurely browse the same sitcoms my neighbors are laughing at while on my watch or phone or tablet or laptop or whatever I have at hand besides dumbTV. I used have a box that the cableCo. 49chanVHF up to UHF injected into the household coaxial distribution splitter so as to watch my cable subscriptions up on UHF in any room when the cable was broad VHF 40chan. and so the TVs in each room could watch the unencrypted VHF13 could also be seen on UHF38, I put a signal inverter into the bedroom TVs and kitchen - flip the switch if HBO or PBS appears scrambled. That's the mindset of thought seed resulting in products like HDHomeRun. convenient access to the source I've already paid for throughout my own home. My mom got pissed I bought her a mobile phone because now I've saddled her with an Albatross. "A what?" A white elephant, something that requires special care and is costly to maintain such as this contract, for something I barely use. HDHomeRun is for multi-device households unwilling to pay a monthly fee to a cable provider for a "set-top box" on each TV (or AppleWatch) Skip all that HDHomeRun becomes your local broadcast provider instead, use Linux for native storage and distribution, chromebook to view, LG smartphone for playback - your media body, your media choice.
I use Playstation Vue with Roku and Amazon Fire TV. This combo seems to do most if not all of what you are doing and it costs $35 per month with unlimited DVR. I get 100 cable channels but do have to get 1 or 2 of the local network stations OTA. I am able to watch live TV and recorded DVR on three TVs at home as well as phone, tablets and laptop at remote locations as long as I have an internet connection. I am not as tech savvy as you but this combo works well for me. Enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.
My cord cutting solution was in 2005 and it was simple. I stopped watching shows on TV and only watched content online. If it's not online, I didn't watch it.
The "little" problem with that mentality is that many shows get CANCELLED after just 1 Season due to people doing exactly what you are doing. So, your show variety is narrow, and you screw the rest of the people that keep trying to support shows by no adding viewership and then the networks AXES the shows before they get the opportunity to be released online (feeding the circle).
Well, the industry gets comfortable making money the same way for decades and just rely on same business model for a long time. People just keep watching the same content; example “Days of our Lives”, and it didn’t really matter what the quality of the content was. There’s was no competition. Remember those days in the 90’s when movie theaters wasn’t making enough money because people didn’t want to see okay movies for lots of money? The industry had to start bringing better content or “movies” so people would come. The internet is competition for broadcast television. That’s the reason now that fake news is trying their best to catch everyone’s attention by scare tactics and such. Their big competition now is social media, also on the internet.
Internet TV and catch up is a great solution too. In the UK you just need a TV license. The rest works with Netflix, Amazon Prime TV and so on. This gives good info into sharing TV around the home and out the home.
What would you recommend to cut the cord at home when I already have a Spectrum account at work? What hardware would I need at home to optimize the my spectrum services elsewhere?
Lon, I use the HD Homerun app on my Xbox One and I'm able to watch the DRM channels. I just can't record them or use the DVR functions on those channels.
Our home is only about 6 years old but for some reason the development didn't have cable TV providers run their lines and our only option is AT&T. Looking at the details for HDHomerun it appears I'm out of luck since UVerse can't be decoded without their hardware.
I find it difficult to change the channels without a Logitech universal type remote or a keyboard. I do miss my cable companies remote. Do you recommend a good universal remote for me to use?
So, it looks like your connection to cable tv content is a prime3 with cable card. What does one do now that prime3 is not made, and prime6 isn't ready ? Any help coming ? I have a Cox fiber to premises coming (someday) and the setup you describe seems not to be do-able without the cable card part of the puzzle ??
they don't want people recording DVR to personal storage devices. In the future they do not want fake CNN news stories saved on personal hard drives resurfacing! scrubbing the web of content they want hidden is crucial for their public mind control! Private NAS is ruing their plan! DO NOT PAY TO STORE YOU INFORMATION ON A STRANGERS SERVER!
Hi Lon. I've been using an HD Homerun Dual for about 4 years in conjunction with my Tronsmart Vega Android Box. All TV is FTA. Works great with the Android app. I've recently moved into an apartment complex which, as well as the FTA channels has selected Pay TV channels decoded, and fed through the same cable as the FTA ones. My cheapy Slovakian made TV has no problem receiving and playing all channels. However, the Homerun (playing thru a Minix Neo box) will not play some of the decoded channels. Would you know why? Does the Minix need additional codecs for these channels maybe? My HP Zbook has the same problem. Thanks.
Can i use a quatro and a prime on the same plex server? Ota is better quality for locals and it keeps tuners on the prime free. I would love to see a video on that
So how long does it take to break even with purchasing all of this equipment minus the savings in monthly rental costs? Also, I don't think you can access on-demand with this setup, correct?
I pay ~$50 all in, for Charter Spectrum @~60Mbps... if you're paying $75 you either have a need for more bandwidth than I do, or you don't know how to play the bi-annual "hey, I'm paying too much to the 'ol cable company... guess I better chat with an agent for 1 hour until they lower my bill again" game
Yes. Well... I'll help you out. I used to do that job (once upon a time). I'll tell you how to get the job done. You can do it one of two ways. -- The first way: if there is a lower tier of service (say some "essential" internet service) switch to that, at whatever price they quote you. Then, a few days later, call back... and magically you qualify for whatever promo they offer for upgrading packages. -- The second way: Call and tell them to cancel your service. Not "I'm going to cancel"... not "I'm thinking of cancelling"... just "Hi, I'm calling to cancel my service. Can you help me with that?" If they don't transfer you, ask them to connect to the disconnection department... or the "retention" department. --Biggest mistake is to say "I'm thinking of cancelling. " The company trains the reps to push "the value" of services. Usually they don't give the customer service reps any way to make your bill lower... ALSO, I forgot: Have some reason why you cant afford it. Tell them you just lost your job and now your family is down to one income. and do your research first. Go to the website and see what promotions they are offering to new customers. Usually you can get the same package for $5 or $10 over the "new customer" price. --Hope that helps you out mate.
Dimitri Rodriguez where are you located and what is your speed? I have never seen Comcast specials that low here for anything over 10mbps, which is nowhere near what I would consider high speed.
Hey Lon, I have a friend who runs a business and he has a nursing home customer who wants broadcast tv over WiFi. Does HDHomerun do anything like that for businesses or do they only do home installs?
Hi I just cut the cord with DirectTV Now & Comcast internet in my 1st week I used 198 GB which about what I used on average a month previously. On average how much data do you use per month?
Which TV can I use HDHomeRun Prime that will act like a regular TV? I'm not talking about boxes in the middle like nVidia Shield. I'm talking about having the TV work the same as with OTA where it can just scan and use the HDHomeRun Prime as though it were OTA and just use the TV's remote to watch TV.
Any chance you could do a side-by-side comparison of Sling AirTv (the wifi capable OTA receiver) with your current setup? Maybe show which apps work for which device? It seems tons of people talk about the duo/Quatro but there's no info on whether or not those apps (Plex, Kodi, liveTV, Cannels, etc) work with the sling version as well?!
Sling’s TV service will only work through their app on their hardware or other Android boxes . Android apps will run on the sling box (including HDHomeRun) but you won’t get sling’s services through Plex for example.

Lon... Love the reviews... if i get the WD NAS storage device - is there any benefit in getting the Nvidia PRO or should i save the money ? I want to setup 2 TVs and network everything with the WD using PLEX... I currently have 2 Fire TVs and use them for only Netflix and some streaming, looking to dump Directv and go with this setup... if i run everything on 1 Nvidia on my main TV could i use the Fire TV on the second TV to watch the recordings etc? whats my best play? don't mind spending some money, but it would be nice to save a little up front and then add on more components - i would try wireless and if that does not work well i could add the MOCAs what are your thoughts?
Lon can you help with this? I am a little confused on how to make the below work since my Verizon fios TV and Internet would be separated at the ONT. The goal is to have super fast wired and wifi internet with no slow downs because of hardware. While also providing Verizon Fios tv to three tv,s with a guide. All without using any Verizon gear. 1. Provider is Verizon Fios TV & Internet 2. I want to get rid of Verizon set top boxes and Verizon router and use my own gear 3. So, the Ethernet port is going to be activated at the ONT 4. I need wired Ethernet for tv guide at 3 tv's, 3 desktops, PS4 and Wii U. Wifi for 2 laptops, 3 iPads and 3 phones 4. House is wired for Ethernet & coax: 2 Ethernet + 2 coax over garage, 2 Ethernet + 1 coax bedroom 1, 2 Ethernet + 1 coax bedroom 2, 1 Ethernet + 1 coax bedroom 3, 2 Ethernet kitchen, 6 Ethernet + 2 coax family room. 5. All Ethernet and coax terminate in hall closet where I would like to keep all gear. At the moment I only have the Netgear 24 port gigabit smart managed plus switch JGS524PE. Besides a router, android devices at each tv and a HD Homerun Prime, what else do I possibly need or do not need. What is the connection order from the ONT? Do I need the moca device?
First thanks for a very informative video. You are my turn to man for internet streaming I'm looking to go HDHomerun + plex + nvidia shield in the near future? I plan to use HDHomerun Premium TV. But in order to use all the features of this service you will first need a cable card from your service provider. And that is where the mumbo jumbo lies? Cox does not wish to issue a cable card to customers without adding their channel lineup service & in home programing even though the current FCC guidelines requires service providers to make readdy. Can you guide you viewers in this area?
How manny Channels con you watch at once in your house? Is there a solution for Europe by HDHomerun tuners, as a DVB-S version? I'm just thinking about building a server that I use with DVB-S cards and use as a NAS. I'm just looking for hardware cheap but also powerful enough for my project. regards Manuel
Hi Lon, I still have some confusion regarding the HDHome Run Prime. Can I watch/record HBO (I pay for subscription) on my HTPC which is running Windows 10 using the HD Home Run Prime and a cable card? Or do I need to use Windows 7 with Windows Media Center?
Hey lon I own a hdhomerun connect but I want to get the hdhomerun quatro what happened to my DVR subscription would it carry on to the new homerun Quatro or can i use both to have more tunners
Thanks Lon for the summary video. I am wondering if you run into issues like me with the NVIDIA Shield? Basically about once a week it wont load HD homerun or states "No DVR configured" (I use your recommended PRZ2100) and I am really at a loss. Plex (Lifetime Subscr)stopped working as well for about a week... strange. To fix it I have to re-install HD Homerun on my server and than it works again. Just wondering if my NVIDIA shield cold be defective. Any advise is much appreciated.
Thanks for the reply Lon. Yes it is all connected with LAN not wireless. I actually added a Netgear switch because my modem from Verizon Fios has only 4 ports. I will restore my NVIDIA Shield to factory specs and see what happens. I love the options that NVIDIA gives me with all the apps etc. and thanks to you I saved about $500.00 over the last few months. I certainly will make a contribution to your channel.
I have been using HDHomerunPrime with Windows Media Center + Ceton (or XBox360) extenders for about 10 yrs now. After viewing PlexTV DVR reviews on your channel, I tried setting it up on my Windows Media Center PC and tried to view recording using Roku3 Plex client. My biggest problem was Fast Forwarding (advertisements) did not work well on Plex client on Roku3. I did not have smooth Fast Forward (not that Windows Media Center + Ceton extender Fast Forward set the bar very high), all I had was skip, even that took forever to resume playback after hitting skip button. All the devices in my home are on wired Gigabit Ethernet, so I know it is not a network issue. Do you have any recommendation on how to achieve usable Fast Forward (and Revind) using PlexTV DVR or HD HomeRun DVR? Do you think Nvidia Sheild TV Plex client will be able to achieve smooth(er) Fast Forward/ Rewind?
Thanks for the State of the Home Theater! I’m still running WMC and since the writing is on the wall for that system I want to have my contingency plan ready to go
Yeah I was putting it off for awhile given that it needed to work well enough for my wife to approve. Thankfully it has been a smooth transition. I ran both systems in tandem for a week or two just to make sure it would work for us. That's what I like about the HDHomerun units is that they are completely software agnostic.
It would really be nice if you could look at Tablo for OTA. No servers, no complex software, works with all major boxes including the very popular Roku. I know you said you don't get much OTA, but maybe you could try it out at another location? I'd really like to hear what you have to say.
I just got the Nvidia shield. It's the only reliable Android TV device that supports 4K HDR for both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, along with google home voice command connectivity. I have it paired with a 50 MB connection and UA-camTV as my cable service. It's a great setup and my ongoing costs per month total $70....that's $40 for UA-camTV and $30 for internet.
Alright this video is fantastic, thank you for making it. I have a question for you, With the HD Homerun and a Cablecard, will I be able to get my paid channels like HBO, Stars, and NFL Redzone? And will these channels still be in HD? If so that would be amazing, I'd be able to record basically everything I watch without having to pay for that stupid box and DVR fee every month.
When I followed your affiliate link to order the HomeRun it took me to amazon which shows that it is not available. Is there an updated link, where you can get paid from? I also want to say that your videos are great!!!
so thanks for doing this man I'm going to be doing the same thing once I move by the end of the year looking forward to trying this stuff out keep up the great work
Lon I currently have SD HDHomerun Prime and am using WMC. I want to retire WMC and go with the HDHomerun viewer. In the beginning I just want to watch live TV. Do I need a server/client setup for this or will multiple clients on various devices running the HDHomerun software find, tune, and play live TV independently?
I can't wait to start building a similar setup! I've been waiting for SiliconDust to make an HDHomeRun device compatible with the Latin American standard and it is finally here. Too bad they only sell it in Brazil, :'( Oh well, I'll wait patiently.
Good to know the place I live in unfortunately is too far away from most broadcasting towers I can live with a streaming service I guess great video by the way great tips for cord cutting.
Get internet from your municipality if they have it or another low cost provider, get sling tv to cover Espn Tnt Tbs and most popular networks, get an antenna for your locals.
Hey Lon, first love this series. It was the original inspiration for my setup as well. Curious, are you able to successfully play 4k rips of your blue ray movies with the WD mycloud and the nvidia shield? Thanks, keep up the great work
Hey Lon you should look at other options that allow streaming channels of cable such as, A&E or History channel, NFL Network, MSNBC etc etc... just a few so you get the idea, I dont mean the pay ones like HBO, Showtime, if you want movies you can get Amazon or Netflix, I mean what most of us would call General or basic cable.... I tried the prime card here but Frontier is a disaster to try and cut the cord or trim/shave cord. I have the new Quatro Box its a beast and we hit it on all four just to see if she Blinks so NO, I have been tried 10 of these so called "Android boxes" on Ebay with Kodi, Mobdro, Terrarium and they are ok but it seems as soon as you find one they all of sudden come out with a new Tier and want you to buy a less traffic route to stream (to me its like bait and switch, you buy the box it works good for a few months then 'oh by the way we have our own service now') I would tell you alot more LON but not on here only because of something I have found about some of the boxes & some border on not being legal (not by me them) I'm not broadcasting their names because i know they work but its just like they are trying to be a mini TV provider service and that's what were all trying to get away from so i wont stear anyone there way !!! what alot of people dont get is if you own Netflix or Amazon prime your getting what most of those scammer bait and switch people are selling people but they have forgotten it seems until its too late ... much more but this is too long now sorry .lol
Here's my opinion of those streaming services: ua-cam.com/video/Xf67YZBOyN8/v-deo.html - problem I have is that they are not allowing ala carte channel selection.
I know, I have looked into Bricked Boxes too and Im sure you know what I mean by that, they offer alot of bait and switch too even if they are legal currently by the letter of the law, it just seems as if there is too little offered for the price that most charge for those boxes. As for you link I have watched that vid of yours before and im not a big fan of either of them services either for pretty much the same reason you stated, when they first announced services they claimed full ALA CARTE but then once they became available and realized they could not make money they switched to what I would call a tier system just like the cable and other pay for tv services. Lon I use Netflix and Amazon mostly along with my OTA I have seen Signs of Amazon is trying to gets its Tv channel act together. They are currently like a kid growing up... not sure about which direction they should take or if they do go down a road was it the right one, Amazon and Netflix clearly have a few shows they have made in house that are pretty good once Amazon gets their act together I think they might be the GO TO Ala Carte Place to go. hopefully they will understand this very soon!
Anyone know who to utilize plex and/or the live tv app with Nvidia Shield to take advantage of both a HD Homerun PRIME and HD Duo? I got a duo for a few local OTA channels that aren't on comcast and I want to try to mix and match with both PLEX (PLEX LIFETIME PASS) and the Live TV App in Android TV (Shield TV). THANKS!
We tried the antenna in the window to get local but because there is a large apartment building in the way we could not get much. The only TV we can get in our condo complex is Comcast which we pay a lot of money for. I am not really that smart about all the different you talk about. But being senior citizens we don't have that money to spend for so many channels that we will never watch. Need to find someone local who understands how all this works and how to hook them up.
*Cable Companies .. hate TV and Phone, but love being your ISP.* This is NOT Cable-Cutting at all, it's the opposite. If anything it's Box-Switching. Even Cable-Cutting isn't cutting anything when you keep their ISP-Cable. Real Cable-Cutting includes OTA only with NO cables to your home. Your Cable Company makes basically nothing from TV and Phone services, the majority of their income is from being your ISP. In fact most cable companies can't wait to get out of the TV and Phone business .. soon isn't soon enough for them.
Great video and tips! Sadly comcast in my town (Portland Oregon) started capping home internet to 1TB / month. They want an extra $50 / month for unlimited data. I went over 1TB last month. They give you two free warnings then they charge you $10 / 50gb over the 1TB up to $200 extra / month. I use OTA roof antenna for all my local channels and have Netflix, Amazon and Roku, Apple TV and Sony 4k smart tv snd of course computers and phones for streaming video and youtube, etc. There are a total of 5 of us in my family. With comcast I currently pay $70 / month for internet only 100/5 down/up with 1TB cap / month nd in Jan its going up to $86 / month plus fees and taxes. Frontier Fiber Fios is offering me 150/150 down/up unlimited data for $40 / month for 12 months. If comcast cant come close to matching price then I think Im going to switch to Frontier in January. Well see.
Lon, I have a hard time following you when you jump from one box that I never heard of to another one that I never heard of. I need a little more detail on these new boxes in order to comprehend what they really do.
I've covered all of them in a good degree of depth on the channel, if you run a search on the boxes on my channel page you'll get a ton of additional detail!
Lon, in your experience what device gives you the best playback quality? I have the HDHomerun Prime as well. I have had issues with the Xbox One S since the Xbox fall update but right now it's my only option for DRM protected content. My Nvidia Shield runs well but no DRM content. I noticed it runs amazingly via my desktop but it isn't practical for living room use. Do you think the extra horse power of the Xbox One X would benefit the HDHomerun playback? I am looking for something that would work with my universal Harmony remote and hub.
+Dave Flannery I haven’t booted up the Xbox client in awhile I need to check it out. What kind of problems are you having? I’ve had the best results from the Shields. Windows PCs also look pretty good. I don’t think the Xbox One X will make much of a difference.
The main reason cable companies did this is because people was getting us service without paying for it just like some people would get internet only service but was connecting the cable to their tv and was getting tv for free that's why the cable comp put filters on lines for people who only had internet service so the couldn't do that
"Cutting the cord" is NOT expensive. I spent $685 for EVERYTHING I needed; a one-time-expense: 1. large outdoor antenna = $200 2. pre-amp - $65 3. 100' coax = $20 4. powered 4-way splitter = $35 5. 4-channel DVR - $230 6. 2 high-speed desktop switches = $30 7. 3 4K Fire Sticks = $75 7. extra 9' mast = $30 My cable TV bill was about $130/mo. I have added PHILO TV app to add the balance of channels I want @$20/mo. So, after less than 7 months, I'm saving $110 a month. So, I just put all of the items on a separate credit card and paid $110 a month on that card. It was a new card, so I had no interest for the first 6 months. That's NOT expensive. That IS a GREAT savings. Just saying...
ISMH on OTA HDTV... If in a SFH then try a Home HDTV you install on the roof and powered for longer coverage.. How about PSVue and UA-cam TV, I use a Powered HDTV Antenna for Local channels a secondary HD channels they have these days... Free TV with no Boxes. I can't use FiOS HD as I had and had to go no Cable or Fiber service at the moment... I save a lot! I have HBO, SHO & Cinemax on PSVue and mobile apps on Google Play... Sign in with your PSVue credentials for ESPN +. Not so with others? Sony!
I'm in tears. I want to cut the cord but this all sounds do complicated and too much to grasp. All I want to do is watch a few news channels, local TV, and colleges and professional football. Servers and routers and Ethernet...It's just.too.much. help me I'm drowning.
been watching a few of these videos and think i got it but if anyone can chime in, would help. If i purchased the HomeRun Connect Quatro I'd cancel my TV packages and run internet only from Verizon/Comcast. Not only would I be saving on the monthly TV service fees but also the box fees. At this point I'd only get access to whatever channels are being broadcast over the air? If I purchased the Homerun Prime, I could keep my current TV package or downgrade to a cheaper one. Send back all my boxes and use the Prime in their place. I'd still be paying for a TV package but I'd save money by not renting boxes and not paying for DVR service? Going this route, I'd still only get the channels that my TV package comes with. So if I downgraded packages I'd only get those channels offered in that package.
If it's not online, I didn't watch it.
......
It's what I've done too.
So how has the single life been for the last 12 years? Because my wife would kill me. 😂
Internet TV and catch up is a great solution too. In the UK you just need a TV license. The rest works with Netflix, Amazon Prime TV and so on. This gives good info into sharing TV around the home and out the home.
Its hard to pay attention at first because I spent my time being jealous of all the retro gear in the background!
You can see a tour of it here! ua-cam.com/video/YrZMRXqxeRs/v-deo.html
Colecovision! And is that a laser tag thing in the background?
What would you recommend to cut the cord at home when I already have a Spectrum account at work? What hardware would I need at home to optimize the my spectrum services elsewhere?
well Lon; i guess the hd home run is obsolete now since the cable app is now available on streaming boxes what do u think about this?
Lon, I use the HD Homerun app on my Xbox One and I'm able to watch the DRM channels. I just can't record them or use the DVR functions on those channels.
Our home is only about 6 years old but for some reason the development didn't have cable TV providers run their lines and our only option is AT&T. Looking at the details for HDHomerun it appears I'm out of luck since UVerse can't be decoded without their hardware.
I find it difficult to change the channels without a Logitech universal type remote or a keyboard. I do miss my cable companies remote. Do you recommend a good universal remote for me to use?
I use Tablo for the OTA DVR solution. Works great and is very simple. Tablo plus Roku works great.
Have you tried various powered antennas to get better OTA reception? Do some stand out? Or are they all hopeless?
Using wifi network will just add another point of failure. Just get indoor/outdoor antenna for each TV.
Hi, do i need to setup multicast in my network? basically we want to use it at the office via wireless.
Any suggestions for an alternative to the homerun prime? At the moment the prime is not available.
they don't want people recording DVR to personal storage devices.
It really depends how many boxes you're getting rid of for the ROI question. It wasn't long for me. You are correct regarding on demand.
CAN I WATCH THE FREE CH ON MY WINDOWS PC AS I DON'T HAVE A TV RIGHT NOW?
Does the Hd homerun prime 3 work with plex and nividia shield severe. If I had a cable card still.
Could create a video if it does. I understand DRM restrictions limit certain channels but I really like plex.
Cable-cutting is a misnomer, because you need to pay Comcast $75.00/month (or more!) for internet, no matter how you slice it.
OneManShow Comcast knows they are the only viable option where I am for internet. The "I'm threatening to cancel" call is usually met with "go ahead"
Yes.
I get high speed internet from Comcast for as low as $20 a month. They run specials all the time.
My cord cutting solution: UA-cam, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and VPN+Torrent+Plex.
CrankkDatJFel You forgot the most important one of all Kodi
Hi I just cut the cord with DirectTV Now & Comcast internet in my 1st week I used 198 GB which about what I used on average a month previously. On average how much data do you use per month?
Which TV can I use HDHomeRun Prime that will act like a regular TV? I'm not talking about boxes in the middle like nVidia Shield. I'm talking about having the TV work the same as with OTA where it can just scan and use the HDHomeRun Prime as though it were OTA and just use the TV's remote to watch TV.
What’s your thoughts on the TiVo products?
Any chance you could do a side-by-side comparison of Sling AirTv (the wifi capable OTA receiver) with your current setup? Maybe show which apps work for which device? It seems tons of people talk about the duo/Quatro but there's no info on whether or not those apps (Plex, Kodi, liveTV, Cannels, etc) work with the sling version as well?!
Sling’s TV service will only work through their app on their hardware or other Android boxes . Android apps will run on the sling box (including HDHomeRun) but you won’t get sling’s services through Plex for example.
Hi I just cut the cord with DirectTV Now & Comcast internet in my 1st week I used 198 GB which about what I used on average a month previously. On average how much data do you use per month?
I currently have a Drobo 5N2 connected to my network. Will HD HomeRun work with this network server?
Lon... Love the reviews... if i get the WD NAS storage device - is there any benefit in getting the Nvidia PRO or should i save the money ? I want to setup 2 TVs and network everything with the WD using PLEX... I currently have 2 Fire TVs and use them for only Netflix and some streaming, looking to dump Directv and go with this setup... if i run everything on 1 Nvidia on my main TV could i use the Fire TV on the second TV to watch the recordings etc?
whats my best play? don't mind spending some money, but it would be nice to save a little up front and then add on more components - i would try wireless and if that does not work well i could add the MOCAs
what are your thoughts?
So , to recap-WD Mycloud, HDHomerun, an NVidia Shield?
Lon what is that keyboard your using ?
Lon can you help with this? I am a little confused on how to make the below work since my Verizon fios TV and Internet would be separated at the ONT. The goal is to have super fast wired and wifi internet with no slow downs because of hardware. While also providing Verizon Fios tv to three tv,s with a guide. All without using any Verizon gear.
1. Provider is Verizon Fios TV & Internet
2. I want to get rid of Verizon set top boxes and Verizon router and use my own gear
3. So, the Ethernet port is going to be activated at the ONT
4. I need wired Ethernet for tv guide at 3 tv's, 3 desktops, PS4 and Wii U. Wifi for 2 laptops, 3 iPads and 3 phones
Hi LON, thanks for mentioning DRM. I wanted to add that I'm using the app on PS3 and can view COX DRM channels.
I’m not sure what they’re telling you.. they won’t provide a card?
How manny Channels con you watch at once in your house?
Is there a solution for Europe by HDHomerun tuners, as a DVB-S version?
I'm just thinking about building a server that I use with DVB-S cards and use as a NAS.
I'm just looking for hardware cheap but also powerful enough for my project.
regards
Manuel
Hi Lon, I still have some confusion regarding the HDHome Run Prime. Can I watch/record HBO (I pay for subscription) on my HTPC which is running Windows 10 using the HD Home Run Prime and a cable card? Or do I need to use Windows 7 with Windows Media Center?
Hey lon I own a hdhomerun connect but I want to get the hdhomerun quatro what happened to my DVR subscription would it carry on to the new homerun Quatro or can i use both to have more tunners
I am pretty sure the DVR subscription carries over to the second tuner as they are both connecting to the same record engine.
Do you use your credentials from your cable provider to watch TV?
It uses a cable card
@@LonSeidman how can I get the card?
Hey can you pls do a review of the Acer Swift 3. I am debating between that, and the Acer aspire 5
Just did one!
I have not. Is everything connected via ethernet?
Sounds like you need a longer antenna and review those long run antennas you find the best one!
What a great video! Lon you are amazing, I love all your tech videos!
Fred Zlotnick I second that
I just got the Nvidia shield.
Are you looking for the Prime? They are transitioning to a new 6 tuner model soon so the 3 tuners have been sold out.
From like the 1940's to around 1990 tv was free and it included all sports, all major sporting events, news, movies educational shows, etc.
I can only get local channels even though I have a cable card.. Help!
so thanks for doing this man I'm going to be doing the same thing once I move by the end of the year looking forward to trying this stuff out keep up the great work
Do you have to have a PC on 24/7 with silicon dust products?
For live tv watching no. Dvr does require a pc or NAS running
For watching no server required. But any kind of recording / time shifting will require a server.
Hello
Can you do this through verizon and get a cable card? Because all I here is about Comcast not Verizon
hdhomerun support told me today that xfinity in California doesn't have DRM besides HBO. just to double check, is that true?
Comcast does different things depending on the market. Where I am in Connecticut the only thing that is DRM'ed is HBO and that random music channel.
I wish there was a cheaper alternative to the shield that worked well with the HDHomerun Prime.
I can't wait to start building a similar setup! I've been waiting for SiliconDust to make an HDHomeRun device compatible with the Latin American standard and it is finally here.
Too bad they only sell it in Brazil, :'( Oh well, I'll wait patiently.
Boxxmen TV Kingpin TV Freestream TV Set TV All better than anything you are talking about!!!! Cord Cutting!!
If ota is not an option what could I do get myself a satellite for local channels?
These tuners do not work with satellite unfortunately.
Good to know the place I live in unfortunately is too far away from most broadcasting towers I can live with a streaming service I guess great video by the way great tips for cord cutting.
Get internet from your municipality if they have it or another low cost provider, get sling tv to cover Espn Tnt Tbs and most popular networks, get an antenna for your locals.
can you show off youtube tv app, tv service on nvidia shield
Hey Lon, first love this series. It was the original inspiration for my setup as well. Curious, are you able to successfully play 4k rips of your blue ray movies with the WD mycloud and the nvidia shield?
Thanks, keep up the great work
So far 4k Blu Ray rips are not yet possible but I'm sure at some point they will be.
Very informative! Actually I've been working on the raspberry pi3 and didn't know about the live TV option. Can't wait to try.
What about LoCast?
Would powerline networking work for this?
+Dustin Zumwalt not well I had issues with it
Dustin Zumwalt yeah it depends on your house's wiring quality, it is usually a bit slower than direct gigabit Ethernet (AV3 vs Cat 6)
I have the new Quatro Box its a beast and we hit it on all four just to see if she Blinks so NO,
I have been tried 10 of these so called "Android boxes" on Ebay with Kodi, Mobdro, Terrarium and they are ok but it seems as soon as you find one they all of sudden come out with a new Tier and want you to buy a less traffic route to stream (to me its like bait and switch, you buy the box it works good for a few months then 'oh by the way we have our own service now') I would tell you alot more LON but not on here only because of something I have found about some of the boxes & some border on not being legal (not by me them)
I'm not broadcasting their names because i know they work but its just like they are trying to be a mini TV provider service and that's what were all trying to get away from so i wont stear anyone there way !!! what alot of people dont get is if you own Netflix or Amazon prime your getting what most of those scammer bait and switch people are selling people but they have forgotten it seems until its too late ... much more but this is too long now sorry .lol
I have fiber tv over iptv I want 2nd tv tunner that picks up my channles over network does HD home run do that
how can i cast recording to a chrome cast?
Anyone know who to utilize plex and/or the live tv app with Nvidia Shield to take advantage of both a HD Homerun PRIME and HD Duo? I got a duo for a few local OTA channels that aren't on comcast and I want to try to mix and match with both PLEX (PLEX LIFETIME PASS) and the Live TV App in Android TV (Shield TV). THANKS!
First comment and great video Lon. Shared to Twitter. Keep up the great work buddy.
Quick tip Ps3 also can play drm content if a xbox one is too much money
You said you have HBO Go on all your devices, but you can't install HBO Go on a Shield. Did you side load it to your Shield?
+Dustin Godec should have mentioned that - I am Chromecasting from my phone
I do the same, Chromecast HBO & Showtime from my phone. Unfortunately I was not able to get either one set up via the Shield TV.
The funny thing about it, I was able to add both HBO & Showtime on my Fire TV with no problem, is it a licensing or compatibility issue Lon?
I think it's the cable industry being stupid.. It's crazy that I can't use the app on the device but stream to it!
Xfinity/Comcast doesn't support Android TV. Some other cable providers do however.
Can’t you just get a Roku stick and use the xfinity stream app because all of my DVR recordings are on Comcast servers.
Comcast charges monthly fees for that kind of access.
Can you sideload that live tv app to a fire tv?
HDHomerun has an app on the Fire TV store but it's not working so great with the new Fire TV 3rd generation, They didn't activate the MPEG-2 decoding.
Lon.TV They didnt include that in Fire OS 6? Sheez. Thanks for the info
Thanks for the videos your vids help me get my prime and plex up and running!
In fact most cable companies can't wait to get out of the TV and Phone business .. soon isn't soon enough for them.
cable cutting is all about IPTV and other video subscription services...
Great video about cord cutting/shaving
Just get a TIVO OTA version, $50 Antenna and maybe an Amazon or Netflix subscription - Save thousands.
Well see.
Are you able to watch FOX 5 , and shows like EMPIRE
Yes, if you have a television broadcaster over-the-air near enough.
Thanks. I just started watching your vids so I wasn't aware of that.
Dave Flannery q
The main reason cable companies did this is because people was getting us service without paying for it just like some people would get internet only service but was connecting the cable to their tv and was getting tv for free that's why the cable comp put filters on lines for people who only had internet service so the couldn't do that
What can I do if I run apple stuff exclusively?
I have a video on Apple TV cord cutting coming up this week!
Lon.TV awesome. Look forward to it.
Shield plus 50 Mbps down+IPTV and stream app for locals..around 55 a month..I watch anything I want on my 55 inch TCL 4k tv
Unlimited cellphone data on a hotspot enabled phone. Connecting roku to the hotspot cellphone. Allows you to completely cut the cord.
The Ceton is a better box than the Prime.. it allows 6 Networked tuners which can work with Kodi
"Cutting the cord" is NOT expensive. I spent $685 for EVERYTHING I needed; a one-time-expense:
1. large outdoor antenna = $200
2. pre-amp - $65
3. 100' coax = $20
4. powered 4-way splitter = $35
5. 4-channel DVR - $230
6. 2 high-speed desktop switches = $30
7. 3 4K Fire Sticks = $75
7. extra 9' mast = $30
My cable TV bill was about $130/mo.
Sony!
Great videos ... keep them coming!!!
I'm in tears. I want to cut the cord but this all sounds do complicated and too much to grasp. All I want to do is watch a few news channels, local TV, and colleges and professional football. Servers and routers and Ethernet...It's just.too.much. help me I'm drowning.
Thanks for another great video!
Until the DRM problem is corrected most people will not be able to watch a lot of channels. I have cable vision lot of channels blocked
been watching a few of these videos and think i got it but if anyone can chime in, would help.
Way not just sign up for sling or ps vue or youtube tv all are super cheap and come with DVR seems like it would be a lot easier
My Opinion on TV Streaming Services: Sling TV, UA-cam TV, Playstation vue, IPTVua-cam.com/video/Xf67YZBOyN8/v-deo.html
