Hi! Ok, so, the notation used throughout this pattern means that you repeat the thing in brackets a certain number of times. What R4 means is "Repeat a sc and then an inc, 6 times" or to put it in long form: sc, inc, sc, inc, sc, inc, sc, inc, sc, inc, sc, inc. You should end up doing 18 stitches in total.

Your channel is amazing, and this guy is so cute! I'm finished with the body on mine and adding the fronds now. I'm not sure how to "repeat the process" on the second side. Where do you start and which direction does it face in order to get the fronds symmetrical with the first side and curling the same way? Does the second one more or less face backwards compared to the first?
Okay, this is the cutest crochet axolotl ever. Like you said, they're everywhere these days, but it was totally worth it for you to design another one. Love the gills (what you call fronds) and the little feetsies! One way you could make the mouth stay in is to sew a mouth-coloured yarn around a stitch on either side of the centre (between R1&2), from the inside, and loop the ends around the eye stalks before putting the caps on. I reckon that would allow you to adjust the pulling-in of the mouth _and_ the eyes, and then tie the ends together when you have the look you want. (I did this on a tiny nug I made for a Dragon Age fan.) Sad side note: From 11:11 to 19:30, the music sounds like tinnitus and it made my brain hurt so I had to mute the audio. Please avoid that song in future videos... :/
I used to have a pet axolotl because I was fascinated by them and he was the sweetest thing in the world. Now I have been teaching myself to crochet using online vids like this and various pattern books I have stumbled across this and must for sure give this a go! How do you teach yourself to make up patterns? I would love to be able to get good enough to just practice and do designs of things you wouldn't normally see :D
Its all just practise past a certain point. Most things are a series of balls and tubes! You may be interested in next week's video though, I'm doing my best to create the ultimate beginner guide :)
@@ComplicatedKnots Oh that would be fantastic for learner like me! Still trying to learn all those little tips and tricks Edit; been watching through your older vids and found you have done a resizing tutorial so scratch that last comment! :)
For round 2, starting round 3. So right at the color change. Is that first single crochet after the last increase in round 2 the first stitch for round 3? So we crochet 11 in the main color?
Question! When you're doing the other side of the frills, do you turn him with his face away from you and work from the bottom up or keep him facing you and work from the top to the bottom? Also when you do the loopy bits do you start at the top of the frill and work towards the bottom?
Any tips on the mouth? I tried and it quickly became apparent I was doing something wrong with the stitches in that and the locking stitch for the eyes 😅
Sculpting issues can be tricky to help with! For the mouth, the idea is to lock the corners in place. I'd play around with pinning it until it looked right to you, and then place stitches through your piece exactly where those pins are. The "locking stitch" for the eyes is literally just sewing once or twice around a sc near the eye so that when you pull your yarn it doesn't pull free, and then threading the needle through to the other eye and sewing around a sc on that side to "lock" it in place.
Hi! 20mm-22mm safety eyes is correct. I've found that depending on where you get your eyes, they'll be measured slightly differently, but I've used ones with a roughly 2cm diameter :)
Hi! I do both the same because I don't think it makes much difference if it's bothering you though, start your second set of fronds from the top and work down instead. That should get it all facing the same way :)
EDIT: R12 of the head should read 10sc, not 9sc
Edit 2: Two typos...that's embarrassing! R19 should read: 2[inc, sc], 6[dec, sc], 4[inc, sc]

Can't understand the back post guys can someone explain it to me
My daughter is wanting one of these but in a plush velvet yarn. Will it work with the pattern but just come out a bit bigger?
Okay, this is the cutest crochet axolotl ever. Like you said, they're everywhere these days, but it was totally worth it for you to design another one. Love the gills (what you call fronds) and the little feetsies!
One way you could make the mouth stay in is to sew a mouth-coloured yarn around a stitch on either side of the centre (between R1&2), from the inside, and loop the ends around the eye stalks before putting the caps on. I reckon that would allow you to adjust the pulling-in of the mouth _and_ the eyes, and then tie the ends together when you have the look you want. (I did this on a tiny nug I made for a Dragon Age fan.)
Sad side note: From 11:11 to 19:30, the music sounds like tinnitus and it made my brain hurt so I had to mute the audio. Please avoid that song in future videos... :/
I love this pattern, gracias, gracias, gracias 🙏🏼🥰💜
Still trying to learn all those little tips and tricks
Edit; been watching through your older vids and found you have done a resizing tutorial so scratch that last comment!
Thank you , I love this..but your video is missing row 17 of the pattern
Row 17 is at the top of the screen at 06:11?
@@ComplicatedKnots it didn't show on my phone sadly :( I
@ComplicatedKnots oh wait I see it now...my phone had a banner across the top.. my mistake ..thank you
Any tips on the mouth?
Hi again! Is there gauge for the cute axolotl?
The glass beads if you have a dollar tree you can buy those they come in different colors
Thank you for SUCH an amazing axoltl! Do you happen to know how many metres of yarn (dk cotton) is needed? Ty in advance
Hi hello sorry to bother you - 22mm seems really big for the eyes, I’m having to follow the transcript, is this correct?
Hi! 20mm-22mm safety eyes is correct. I've found that depending on where you get your eyes, they'll be measured slightly differently, but I've used ones with a roughly 2cm diameter :)
@@ComplicatedKnots fantastic thank you very much! It seemed huge until I put them on the axolotl 😂
How is the second frond worked so that the wrong side is not facing front?
Hi! I do both the same because I don't think it makes much difference if it's bothering you though, start your second set of fronds from the top and work down instead. That should get it all facing the same way :)
R20 is correct??
3:47pm Jan 28, 2024. Row 12 doesn't seem to add up to 42 stitches, am I miss counting or is there a typo?
Oops found where you posted the typo. Sorry
