The snake is an absolute masterpiece. I thought it was merely amazing until THE TONGUE and now, NOW it's pure art. I can't stop laughing. Please, more patterns, these are incredible. Even though I was trying to knit while watching and had to keep stopping so I didn't drop my stitches with all the giggles you set off every time you laugh. 🤣

My mom showed me some "pictures" of old ladies standing beside live-sized, realistic, crochet tanks the other day, and I had to break the news to her that it was probably AI generated. Did lead me down a rabbit hole, though, and some of the stuff that it gens are super cute, and I wanna try to recreate it. Definitely not a bad idea for if you're in a creative slump and don't know what you want to make, or just for general inspo.
Edit: I looked at AI rendered images, instead of written patterns, that might be something interesting for you to try and recreate. Most are horrific eldritch monstrosities, but some are pretty cute and dare I say actually makeable!

I found out recently that if you say "please finish the pattern", it sometimes tells you to make limbs and how to sew things. I think it has a character limit per post.
I asked it to give me a pattern for a majestic dragon, and it just gave me a body and head! That can't be a dragon! So then I asked for a dragon with head, body, wings, arms, and legs. It said "ok, here is a crochet pattern with all the details you listed" - but it ended after the head again! So I complained "You didn't include any of the limbs!" And it replied "Sorry! Here is the rest of the pattern you requested." Then the rest of the pattern showed up!
I haven't made the pattern yet but for anyone curious, here it is:
ChatGPT: "Sure, I'd be happy to help you create a crochet pattern for a majestic dragon! Here is a more detailed pattern that includes all the elements you requested:
    Materials:
Yarn in the colors of your choice (for the dragon, you may want green, yellow, and red)
Crochet hook (size will depend on the weight of your yarn)
    Fiberfill stuffing
    Yarn needle
    Scissors
    Body:
Begin with a magic ring and work 6 single crochets (sc) into the ring.
Increase in each stitch (12 sc).
Sc in next stitch, increase in next stitch around (18 sc).
Sc in next 2 stitches, increase in next stitch around (24 sc).

    Head:

    *Sc in next stitch,"
Me: "you didn't include all the elements I requested"
ChatGPT: "I apologize for the oversight. Here is the remainder of the pattern to complete the dragon:
    Wings:
    Using green yarn, chain 13.
Starting in the second chain from the hook, work 12 sc across (12 sc).
Chain 1 and turn. Work 12 sc across (12 sc).
Repeat step 3 until the wing measures approximately 12 inches long or your desired length.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Make a second wing using the same pattern.
    Arms:
    Using green yarn, chain 8.
Starting in the second chain from the hook, work 7 sc across (7 sc).
Chain 1 and turn. Work 7 sc across (7 sc).
Repeat step 3 until the arm measures approximately 6 inches long or your desired length.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Make a second arm using the same pattern.
    Legs:
    Using green yarn, chain 10.
Starting in the second chain from the hook, work 9 sc across (9 sc).
Chain 1 and turn. Work 9 sc across (9 sc).
Repeat step 3 until the leg measures approximately 8 inches long or your desired length.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Make a second leg using the same pattern.
    Horns:
    Using yellow yarn, chain 6.
Starting in the second chain from the hook, work 5 sc across (5 sc).
Chain 1 and turn. Work 5 sc across (5 sc).
Repeat step 3 until the horn measures approximately 4 inches long or your desired length.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Make a second horn using the same pattern.
    Assembly:
Attach the head to the body using a yarn needle and matching yarn.
Attach the wings to the body using a yarn needle and matching yarn.
Attach the arms to the body using a yarn needle and matching yarn.
Attach the legs to the body using a yarn needle and matching yarn.
Attach the horns to the top of the head using a yarn needle and matching yarn.
Embroider or sew on eyes, nostrils, and other details as desired.
And there you have it, a crochet pattern for a majestic dragon! I hope you enjoy making it. Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else I can help you with."

I have a feeling this is far from majestic 😂 if I'm reading the pattern correctly, it is just a basic head/body (no long neck or anything), and then the wings/arms/legs/horns are just flat rectangles 😅

    • @robodragonn9506
      @robodragonn9506 Рік тому +27

It does seem to have given it a snout, at least (or "face" as it terms it) and i second that all of the limbs and horns are just rectangles, not even with the stitches orientated in an interesting way on the wings (seriously if you worked it so you did fewer long rows i think you might get a more interesting result)
Maybe on the arms and legs it got mixed up with, like? Garment patterns? And went "these should obviously be worked flat"? I really have no idea where it got that from otherwise, ive never seen that in any amigurumi pattern i think

There is a way to tell it to show you the list of consulted bibliography. AI is not inventing, juat using parts of things it was fed. You may be plagiarizing someone's work or mixing a couple of recipes. You should always considered this as if you were writing an academic paper. AI will list what it has "consulted" so you always must ask.

@@irenitele8497 I mean if you just make it for yourself and not to share/sell it doesnt really matter. if you ended up selling the pattern/objects made from the pattern/whatever sure, then copyright issues and plagiarism comes into play, but if you’re just messing around on your own for your own entertainment it doesnt matter

I think this is a great illustration of the fact that ChatGPT is a *language* model. It can pretend it knows what you're saying and maybe even convince you that it knows what it's saying because it's all grammatically, syntactically correct, but at the end of the day, as you said, it literally does not know what a snake looks like, it just knows how to use the words "snake".
Great video, as others have said I'm glad you didn't cut out the laughing. Absolutely subscribing.

    • @susie6311

It probably takes all kinds of existing snake patterns and tries to combine them into one

    • @annabellep9147
      @annabellep9147 Рік тому +5

@@susie6311 This is a common misconception, but it's actually even sillier than that. It's not that it takes existing snake patterns and tries to combine them. It doesn't know what a snake is or what a pattern is. It sees that you used the words "snake" and "crochet" and "pattern" and it knows based on its training data that when it sees those words, the following words are some list of letter/number combinations. Statistically they usually start with "6sc in mr" so it's likely to start with that, statistically what usually follows is "inc in each st around", etc. It's even dumber than we're giving it credit for haha.
That's why you end up with something that *looks* like a crochet pattern, but doesn't actually make sense - it's just trying to replicate the syntactic structure of a crochet pattern, it doesn't know what any of it means

    • @susie6311
      @susie6311 Рік тому

@annabellep9147 oh yea, that's what I meant! Just in way less words haha, I'm bad at explaining things. I think that system is pretty neat, but not for art. I mainly use ChatGPT for programming, so it finding a bunch of common solutions based on a few keywords is very useful to me (for simpler stuff). Although, Perplexity is winning me over

    • @theninja4137
      @theninja4137 11 місяців тому +1

@annabellep9147 that's the basic idea, but the actual breakthrough was that OpenAI trained a different, new model to recognize helpful answers and unhelpful ones (by having people rank answers by helpfulness), then used that to train ChatGPT to give more helpful answers
It is still only using statistics on text and data from training tests (and some clever ways to leverage all of these), but considering that, isn't it surprisingly good? Something that's only statistics on internet text gives followable crochet instructions, some of which actually gave alright results

I made a crochet snake once. It was over a decade ago when I very first started. It was the first thing I ever designed. I'd been crocheting less than a fortnight and wanted something reasonably simple to make from scratch to help me really understand how stitch placement effected the sculpting of a piece. I remember many evenings after the little were in bed, painstakingly working out exactly where I needed to place each individual INC and DEC to get the perfect shape. Staring at photo after photo of ball python analysing their facial anatomy. Frogging row after row until my snake was perfect.
To this day he remain the most accurate and perfect piece I've ever designed. Do you think I thought to take a single fricking note!!!??? No, no I did not. I wasn't good at crochet and was doing half of it wrong so have never been able to replicate his perfection.
I'm brilliant at crochet now and rarely use a pattern, when I do it's only as a rough guideline. I can design very complex things with ease now ... do you think I've EVER been able to make a snake even half as good as that first one!!!?? NO no I can not.
He's still not finished though. Once I made it to the tube of his body, I only did 20 stitches or so in each yarn. Just a small scrap from every other project I've ever made in DK weight. Doubt he'll ever be finished with how little of each skein I add to him. Any time I finish a DK project I add a few extra stitches to his body.

on the topic of uploading any patterns curated from AI as your own: always ask the AI you’re using if you plan on doing it. for many, especially chatgpt, the responses it delivers are property of the developers who own the technology who, in most cases, do not expect credit for the responses produced nor the re-uploaded or edited content it produced for you. upon request, however, most of these ai chat assistants will provide you (upon request) with “cited sources” in which it recognizes human generated information which it used to produce the answer (i use this prompt or smth similar after i ask for sources cited: “explain where each cite took place in your answer”. i also know that “source” is the correct term but this prompt often results in the expected answer and is less likely to make the AI go off on a tangent about the sources themselves) which you can then use to further educate yourself about the thing you’re attempting to produce and polish off the result.

Inspired by this video, I asked ChatGPT to "create a new crochet pattern for a pretty dress for a two-year-old- girl". It did so rather quickly and with great enthusiasm! "Wonderful!", thought I, though I wasn't feeling much in the way of optimism. Fortunately, I've been crocheting for many, many.... many years (ugh, I'm old) and I'm able to pretty much visualize the end product of a crochet pattern, as ChatGPT can't show you a picture. I stopped at about row 15 when I realized it didn't have a neck hole! It was basically an upside down bucket. 🤣 Thanks so much for this video, and the inspiration to try this. Both were a great laugh! 😄

How you were describing it's answering process makes so much sense - there's no verification. It's giving us what it ~might~ look like.
As an example, I asked ChatGPT to create an APA formatted bibliography for a bunch of linked journal articles. It followed APA format, but everything was just a little bit off. The authors names were not correct, but they were similar. Like, one of the journal articles was written by a team headed by someone with a middle eastern sounding name that started with A. ChatGPT said the authors for that article were 4 people with middle eastern names starting with A, but none of them were correct. Some of the titles were correct, but some were just a little bit different like changing "psychological" to "psychiatric." The DOI links were a few numbers off of the correct DOI link. It was so interesting. It really was trying to give me an answer that fit my question, but not something exact. Idk if this is to avoid plagiarism or what...
When I correct ChatGPT, it said "sorry, I made a mistake before. Here's the correct answer." And it was not correct, just another variation.
It's an interesting limitation of the tool, which is supposed to save so much time, but it's very apparent when you really need it to be very very specific like with a crochet pattern or a bibliography...

That, plus specific source mentions, considering the fact that AI takes all its info from human created sources. Just a list of 'for this piece, the model used elements from these sources' would probably be enough.

    • @theninja4137
      @theninja4137 11 місяців тому

@@meikusjeit's not that easy, as the number of sources for any given answer is probably in the tens of thousands. It doesn't just crop together different inputs, it has statistics stored about how letters form words, how words form sentences, how sentences form context.... - storing which sources influenced which parameter would make memory requirements skyrocket
(To visualize it, think about each of the parameters as a mountain, and the training data as direction signs - can you tell at the end of the hike which direction signs were the most important ones to reach that peak? Now there are about 1.5 billion of these mountains to climb, which direction signs on which mountain were the most important?)

But all jokes aside, even tho' AI is neat tool, it comes with huge amount of data theft. Since it cannot create, it only copies from mostly stolen pictures, pattern, books etc.
Also, but this is problem with art and photo theft mainly, many people using these generators are doing so to create lawfully untouchable csem, cover actual csem, make revenge prn and so on. Also, some databases even use stuff like stolen medical data
It's not a good thing to mess with, even for the meme

In truth i think that the ai img generator and the ai amigurumi generator problems are by and large the same. The ai have to be trained to develop and that will always be done on a massive scale where the creators cant or wont pay for the "training materials".
Where-as a human can develop or elaborate on ideas they see/make, an ai can only copy what its previously learned. In turn it will always be copying other peoples work in whole or in part without the humans behind it recieving neither credit nor payment. It can and will put people in the creative sector out of work, because the profits tend to be slim in this kinda work
    - A former freelance artist
Edit: that doesnt mean u cant have fun or play with these kinda tools, its just important to me that people understand the tools they are working with and how they were made.

I’ve been using Meta AI for a few days now. Based on your query I asked the same of Meta and this was its response:
I'd rate my performance an 8 out of 10.
    I successfully:
    - Created a fun song lyrics based on your input
    - Provided suggestions for music styles and song titles
    - Researched and offered alternatives for AI-powered crochet pattern generators
    - Acknowledged and apologized for the limitations and inaccuracies in my responses
However, I didn't fully meet your expectations in finding a platform that can directly generate a crochet pattern from a photo. I'll strive to improve my knowledge and performance for future interactions!
I thought that was pretty accurate. It definitely kept giving me nonexistent platforms I was asking for.
I then asked it for an advanced Axolotyl crochet pattern and it gave me this:
I'd be happy to help! However, I'm a large language model, I don't have the capability to create visual patterns or images. But I can provide you with a written pattern for an advanced Axolotl crochet design.
Please note that this pattern will require some experience with crochet and amigurumi techniques. Here's a written pattern for an advanced Axolotl design:
    *Axolotl Crochet Pattern (Advanced)*
    *Body:*
    - Start with a magic ring
    - 6 sc into the ring
    - Inc in each st around (12 sc)
    - Continue with even rounds until the body measures 4 inches
    *Head:*
    - Attach yarn to the top of the body
    - 4 sc into the ring
    - Inc in each st around (8 sc)
    - Continue with even rounds until the head measures 1.5 inches
    *Ears:*
    - Attach yarn to the top of the head
    - 2 sc into the ring
    - Inc in each st around (4 sc)
    - Continue with even rounds until the ear measures 0.5 inches
    - Repeat for the second ear
    *Tail:*
    - Attach yarn to the back of the body
    - 4 sc into the ring
    - Inc in each st around (8 sc)
    - Continue with even rounds until the tail measures 2 inches
    *Feet:*
    - Attach yarn to the bottom of the body
    - 2 sc into the ring
    - Inc in each st around (4 sc)
    - Continue with even rounds until the foot measures 0.5 inches
    - Repeat for the second foot
    *Gills:*
    - Attach yarn to the sides of the head
    - 2 sc into the ring
    - Inc in each st around (4 sc)
    - Continue with even rounds until the gill measures 0.5 inches
    - Repeat for the second gill
    *Assembly:*
    - Attach the head to the body
    - Attach the ears to the head
    - Attach the tail to the body
    - Attach the feet to the body
    - Attach the gills to the head
    *Notes:*
    - Use a stitch marker to keep track of the rounds
    - Use a tapestry needle to weave in the ends
    - Use a yarn needle to embroider the eyes and mouth
    *Materials:*
    - Medium weight yarn (pink or gray)
    - Size J (6.0mm) crochet hook
    - Polyester fiberfill for stuffing
    - Black yarn for embroidery
I hope you enjoy making this advanced Axolotl crochet design! Let me know if you have any questions or need further clarification on any of the steps.
