Is Fractional Gold Bullion Overpriced?

  • In this video I talk about fractional gold bullion and if it is overpriced or not. Fractional gold is any piece of gold that is smaller than an ounce. If you are investing in gold then you need to be purchasing it at the lowest premium possible. Fractional gold typically has higher premiums compared to buying an ounce of gold. Fractional gold stacking is very popular because of the lower price point. In this video I mention that I prefer fractional gold coins over fractional gold bars, but that is mostly personal preference. The biggest part of my fractional gold collection is my fractional gold eagles. I have 4 fractional gold eagles and I hope to be picking up more in the near future! In my opinion the best fractional gold coins to buy are the ones with the lowest premiums. If you have no gold at all then perhaps something like a 1/10 ounce gold coin might be right for you, but I would not buy a lot of them because of the premiums. It was interesting that in making the video I discovered that currently the gold sovereign coin had the lowest premium. I will be fractional gold stacking as much as I can if I can keep finding good deals and I hope to be increasing my fractional gold collection by a few more gold coins in the coming months.

I have a small budget for precious metals. Would take 9 - 10 months to save for a full ounce. So I look for the best price I can find on fractionals. I have just reached my first 1 ounce total of gold. Now that I have some gold, I may save to purchase the larger denominations. I was eager to reach that first one ounce to add to my silver stack. Some gold better than no gold. Good video Mr. Dragons.

The premium on fractional gold drives me away, but the affordability draws me back in. It's hard for me to save $500+ without buying something before I can accumulate it. I just got my first gold ever - a 1/10oz Kook (featured in my latest vid), and was surprised at how small it was in person. But, it did help me "break the ice", and think about getting more. I'll probably end up with more 1/10, and even some 2.5 gram PAMPS, etc., but will try to go with 1/4 when I can. Those coins like the francs are attractive! This video was very helpful. Thanks!

No you are absolutely correct. The Buffalo is 24k and is one ounce.
As you stated was correct. The problem with the Buffalo requires a lot more maintenance than other gold coins because it is made out of pure gold. You can’t just keep pulling it out and unless you have a “no movement “ coin holder ( meaning no side to side and no up or down movement) because if you have an even small amount of movement you will get damage to the coin, in dings and possibly even scratches.

They dont see the worsening events that are about to befall us much less the age old gold, silver that's available as a buffer to help protect us. Short answer YES!
If I want to buy wealth in metals but dont have enough to buy a full ounce I'm just gonna stick to silver. I bought a few 1 oz gold coins in the recent past just to have some, it's good to diversify so get SOME gold if you have none. But if you have enough dont get ripped off. I'm stacking silver till that GS ratio closes in more. I'm thinking when our economy goes back to normal gold prices might fall some, so I'm saving some cash for that.
But the British coins are a really great suggestion imo. I'm stacking Britannias for now because American eagles are just outrageous. Also Britannias actually look the best imo from all the coins I have, Maple leaves are a close second tho.

Something to think about.. if you have a one ounce gold coin and you need to sell or barter in times of trouble, do you think they will have change or some type of IOU set up? No, probably not. So what is a bigger loss, $2k for the gold coin with no change available, or the premium on a gram of gold? Seems like a no-brainer to me. These silver influencers are paid by the industry. They turn your views, likes, and occasional auctions into their own stack. Look at this dudes video on his full silver stack. Don't but into their BS. Silver will not go to $50 in our lifetime, and gold will not surpass $2,200 in our lifetime. Think about it. Be realistic. 😊

QUESTIONS - I’m new to this so I’m sorry if this is a dumb question, but WHY do they charge more to make a smaller coin? I don’t understand. Also, what are all the costs included in the word “premium”? Is it just the cost of manufacturing each coin? Last, I’m confused about the difference between “rounds” and “bullion”?
It appears that the word “bullion” refers to the non-collectible coins that don’t have a date printed on them? And are “rounds” just another word that means “bullion”?

I've found $100 bills to be useful when traveling, but I have a feeling that will change soon. Obviously bribes don't work the way they do in the movies, there is literally nothing stopping the bad guy from just taking the money and still doing what they planned, or if a cop, hitting you with a fresh set of charges for bribery. On the other hand it isn't like everybody in a poor country is trying to sell you to kidnappers either. Sometimes people get that you're lost and want to help you, but also are on the fence about trying to help you, bc they don't know what kind of trouble you might get them involved in, and conscience is easy to suppress if they think there's risk involved; A gram of gold is a large pro to a random civilian in a 3rd world country, but also doesn't scream "rich;" Though I still recommend the backseat. In most places US currency is defacto accepted, but in some places the locals avoid it like the plague bc it can get them killed if they're caught with it. Combine learning to not look American (it isn't hard if you're attentive) with very small pieces of metal that are worth something, and you have a last ditch "please take me to my hotel" bargaining chip even if your cell phone and wallet have been taken in a mugging or pick pocketing. I'm fairly racially ambiguous, quick to pick up accents, decent with languages, and pay close attention to local fashion and body language down to the expressions people wear, so I've been able to blend into alot of places, but YMMV. That's the only point I see in high premium over spot fractional size gold. Jewelry is way easier to get though customs without questions, but it's very difficult to appraise on the spot so it's less useful for this purpose.

I’ve stayed at 1/10 and 1/4 TOz as I’ve moved from silver more to gold. The point you make about premiums is valid but I think it’s over stretched. The point of concern is liquidity. 1/10 TOz sell super fast and retain the premium. The 1TOz is tied more to spot and is more difficult to shift in a hurry. Contrasting my, off-weight coins are definitely tied to spot and I feel are less liquid. I think the best advice I’ve heard came from IS who said buy what’s on offer and don’t collect!

You have to have all types of fractionals. Staying on the 1 oz boat is pretty silly. Full oz and fractionals are the way to go. Need 300 bucks sell a 1/10th. Don’t sell a full oz for a loaf of bread.

Buying fractional I have amassed closed to 3 ounces of gold in the last yr. So it takes me roughly 4 months (while also heavy on buying silver) to accrue an ounce of gold. I need to buy it as I can afford it because one ounce 3 times a yr takes a lot of time.

Usually I just purchase silver since I can afford ounces with ease. Though I did get my feet wet with 1867 10 Franc, old as Canada itself. Decent price on the 10 Franc as well. Though if you have the money get the 20 Franc.
Ducats, Guilders, Marks & Roubles are all decent options as well for the right price.

I was able to pick up 10 Gold Eagles, one tenth ounce under spot. It was a "lost leader" offer to get you into their program to buy over priced slabbed coins in the future. Hey man your not cheap, just smart! I had a gold dealer that tried to sell me all of my $600,000 in purchase in fractional quarter ounce coins at $666 each that were Australian coins with no numismatic value over anything but bullion. I had told him that I had no education in gold so he tried to convince me that 1/4 ounce have a higher resale value. I told him that I wanted to buy only one ounce coins and he spent an extra hour begging me to by them, asking Don’t you trust me? And he tried to lie that I don’t have to pay taxes when reselling them because they were not reportable to the IRS. The price for these little coins was going to cost me $2664 per ounce!!! The spot price of gold this day was around $1930. I ended up buying one ounce Maple leaves for $2060 per ounce at a total of 292 oz. of gold. If I had bought the fractional the quarter ounce gold coins it would only given me 225 ounces of gold for the same $600,0000 giving up the equivalent of 67 ounces of gold for himself!!! $130,650. He was trying to legally rob me! Thank GOD I was smart enough not to allow him to get away from robbing me! After doing the math I now know why he sounding like he was crying on the phone saying I have been doing this for so many years and. You don’t believe in my experience? I asked him to explain to me why the fractional gold coins were a better deal and all he could say is the go up higher in value faster historically. He thought he could get me to believe his bs and I kept telling him that I could not understand his logic. He was so dam upset, he probably have bought a new car, paid off his house and taken a cruise around the world for the gold combination of gold coins he was trying to get away with. Thank god I am smart and CHEAP as you call it. I don’t want to make someone else rich on my hard earned money!!!

The Gold Sovereign has a lower premium by weight than the 1 Ounce Gold Eagle. End of Story. Also, the Gold Sovereign is not fractional. You have 1/2 Ounce Eagles and Maples, etc., and there are 1/4 Ounce and 1/10 Ounce variations of those. But the Sovereign is not a 1/2 or a 1/4 or a 1/10 of anything. It is a Sovereign plain and simple.
