I love Laura Marling. One of the best folk singers of the modern era.
I'm flying by the seat of my pants here, but I'll take a stab at it !As someone who has played a lot of casual guitar & drum circles this is just perfect. Not everyone's cup of tea, but this is right up my alley! Playing by ear, you must pick up chord changes and the key you're in. Having a healthy suitcase of cliche sayings does not hurt either. Love the dynamics of these arrangements, and her understated delivery. You have done quite a bit of acoustic guitar music this week! The prog-heads are getting nervous, be patient please you do yourself a disservice!Hits the spot after a Saturday walk in the forest. Thanks & Peace.
I'm shocked you stumbled into some Laura Marling. She is a real treasure.
I hope you find some Gillian Welch in your future as well. .
Re: Gillian Welch. The song Annabelle (Alternate Version) popped up on my Spotify radio. Instant like and now in my top playlist. Fantastic track and artist!
Hi Justin. Great review/reaction ! I am so pleased that you enjoyed it. Knowing that this album was coming up, I have been like a big kid waiting for Christmas ! There is a great live version of this piece available on UA-cam : "Suite - Laura Marling with 12 Ensemble @ Royal Albert Hall (2020). The studio version is, perhaps, best listened to followed by tracks 5-7 ( Master Hunter, Little Love Caster, Devil's Resting Place ) which takes you to the mid-point of the album without a single pause. I have been a fan of Laura since the release of her brilliant, second studio album, " I Speak Because I Can " (2010). I would also highly recommend the albums, " A Creature I Don't Know "(2011) ,,and, " Sempa Femina " (2017). Her most recent album, " Song For Our Daughter " is probably my favourite. The album is full of tender, emotional songs, such as, " Fortune ", " Blow By Blow " and , " The End Of The Affair ".
Big Laura Marling fan. Check out her side project with Tunng called LUMP.
Also, check out Tunng - their album "Turbines" is excellent.
It is definitely time for you to do Joanna Newsom. Listen to 'Emily's 9ff the album 'ys' - great place to start.
Possibly the best lyricist and folk singer of the last 40 years.
At first I was confused, I was expecting to hear some killer 80's pop (I mistook Laura Marling for Laura Branigan :D). Then she started playing Pink Floyd's Fearless and I was into it - this is nice. If you can take a few suggestions in the same vein, or just more awesome female singer-songwiters, give Petra Jean Phillipson (similiar to Laura here), Anna von Hausswolff, Rose Kemp (Maddy Prior's daughter), the amazing Susanne Sundfør, and especially Happy Rhodes a try.
Fearless… yes, I hear that, too!
Thanks for playing Laura Marling. I've bookmarked this to listen to later. One of the most respected and talented folk artists of her generation. I hope you enjoyed the listen.
Awesome you're checking out Laura Marling. Not the first album I would have turned to of hers, but her music is simply outstanding.
The song "Little Bird" from this album channels Led Zep III.
Just checked her live performance of this suite with a string ensemble on You Tube. Better than the original. Obviously folk, but on her Semper Femina, she investigated different moods. If i remember well, the year Once I Was an Eagle came out, Jimmy Page chose it as his "best thing i heard all year" in Mojo. Check out her amazing duet with Johnny Flynn called The Water.
"play it by ear"... having heard a piece of music, you play it without referring to sheet music.
Tasteful and minimalistic. I would believe you if you said this had the same producer as Iron And Wine. I wouldn't listen to this on a dark highway. Too quietly hypnotic. Pop and prog fans will hate this. I agree about the Joni Mitchell influences though I hear Jane Siberry in the phrasing here (though not Jane's playfulness). Some other influence I would think as well but I am not well versed enough to pinpoint it. Feist maybe? I am surprised she never played the local festival. Her music fits the mold.
I love Laura Marling AND pop AND prog. Just to clear the air! She's acknowledged the Joni influence, mentioning Court & Spark as major for her (though later recordings also pointed towards Don Juan's Reckless Daughter), and i never thought of Jane Siberry but i totally hear it now.
I bumped into her music, I think it was from NPR Tiny Desk, and was impressed instantly.
After a Friday night neighbor’s party till 2am. I was in and out of sleep to finally wake to this. It fit my low key, hangry (coffee please) mood this morning, another morning it may have not, good timing. Joniesque, yes but darker, more natural woodsy spirit music. Rain could be tears… and again, tears but, enough.
Can’t always wake up to Magma, this was good.
Justin, you appear to have a lot of 'critics' in your audience. You all are hilarious. This music is very interesting, but also quite different from your 'typical music'. Justin gets it. You all clearly didn't, but that's ok, since all music is subjective. Sometimes, I'm not in the mood to listen to this kind of music either. Maybe next Saturday you'll be in a different frame of mine, and you'll appreciate this... for what it is.
There are a few critics who complain >80% of the time so I kind of take them with a grain of salt (or maybe a block depending on circumstances).
I think they’re just being honest, I don’t like everything played here.
That’s what I like about the channel… part of the charm. All in good fun.
@@-davidolivares I agree that they're being honest. I just felt like messing with them a little 🙂

We all need a healthy elbow in the side to show we’re not thee only way of seeing things. Be honest, enjoy the music, or not…
@@-davidolivares that for that elbow 🙂
Bit late to this one but I see that the commenters have picked up on all the influences that I hear - Joni Mitchell (circa 1976) playing some Roy Harper and Leonard Cohen with Jimmy Page on acoustic guitar. Pleasant and enjoyable but not worth spending more than a couple of quid on as I've heard it all before (even though I haven't!)
To me, listening to new music is like fishing. I might cast dozens of times. Most of time, nothing bites. Every once in a while, I catch a small to medium fish and I’ll throw it back. Rarely, I catch a whopper. The whole experience, especially the thrill of a big catch is enough to keep me coming back (I even enjoy casting, too). This album side (cast) results in a catch that I would throw back in the water. It was an interesting catch and enough to keep me coming back for the elusive big one!
A bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work! 😁
You should check out some Anna Calvi. "Desire". She is contemporaneous with Laura Marling. She is the opposite of Marling. Where Marling is calming, relaxing, energy. Calvi is often violent, aggressive in her sound and approach.
If Joni Mitchell and Roy Harper had a secret love child back in the day, then Laura must surely be that child.
the baroness marling.
I'd loosely describe Laura as a combination of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen.
She's not that much like Cohen, I mean I've never wanted to blow my brains out after listening to her.
I think it might be one of those you have to be in the right mood for, but that was me today. I must have not been paying proper attention (maybe that's my way in) because I was picking up quite a lot of dry irony, rather than anger. But yes, anger is a good interpretation of the mood, now I think of it. Maybe a mix of some revived anger, and some sarcasm left over after the anger has passed? I liked the "Beatles-Indian" aspects. I'm often in the mood for something that sounds like it wants to be near the Ganges.
Anyway, I have more good news for you from *Kings X* . *Let It Rain* is now available in the studio form on UA-cam. ua-cam.com/video/BWUrrCB_Ulo/v-deo.html (I like it better than the live version I gave a link to yesterday. I think they were still working on it at that stage, and the sound quality of that recording was pretty bad.)
It's been a while since I've made a request (I make so few) 😛but here's one for you that I "think" you'll greatly enjoy. 'The Poke' and 'Masques' by Brand X. They don't technically 'go together', but they really do, which is why 'Masques' is the second piece on the album, and 'The Poke' was the opening track. There's often a reason that music is ordered the way it is on an album, and 'The Poke' followed by 'Masques' creates the perfect contrast of the music of Brand X. Hope you react to it, and let me know if you agree with me on this 🙂

FYI you wrote 'Breath' instead of 'Breathe'. A rare mistake.
😒I think I'm going to take a nap now ................ Zzzzz😴
You wasted a Album Side Saturday on this? Please go back to Tangerine Dream. Maybe Force Majeure.
Nice idea!
Well I certainly won't be holding my breath for side 2, sounded like a depressing dirge to me
I like Laura Marling a bit, but c'mon, four songs in a row from her after months of waiting for Heep? Priorities, dude. 🙄
I just did Heep last week lol
Don't tell me, "it's all about the lyrics", again... Cos surely this recommendation wasn't about the music. Drab, monotone, and uninteresting. Also, was this really 4 songs? I think JP may've just played the one song 4 times by mistake, it certainly sounded like that to me. Re playing by ear, just means playing a tune without the music score. You hear a tune, and just rattle it off from what you've just heard. Takes a good ear.
When JP started talking I kept waiting for him to start the next track but it never happened.

I thought this was pretty interesting stuff, but I didn't think you'd care for it. Just a guess : )
@@Lightmane You were spot on, ha.
