I worry about metal scoring the brass so I've used natural or plastic broom bristles and even a bristle from a tooth brush on small holes. Also aren't you supposed to not remove the main jet on some carbs and try to clean it left in place?
I bought an old ariens snowblower at an estate sale. My wife called it a pos that will never run. After watching this video let's just say we proved her wrong! Thanks Steve!
@Sottie D, in your eyes, you proved her wrong, But after 38 years of marriage..... I've found my wife is only 'mistaken' ! Some points ain't worth making! Lol
Thank you so much! This was exactly the situation that I had with my Craftsman 5/22 snowblower. My father originally bought it back in the mid 90's. I had only ever cleaned the carburetor once (bought a kit as well) when my mother still owned it and I used it for clearing her long, double-wide driveway. After I inherited it, I kept in the shed out back in the summer and in my garage in the winter where it would be handy. I did the routine maintenance and always ran it for a while before moving it between seasons. In 2022, I had run it in the fall when moving it to the garage but then when I needed it after a heavy snowfall, it would not run! I dreaded having to get the kit and clean the carburetor so it has sit in the garage since. This year after several days of snow and shoveling every day, we finally had a snowstorm that dumped eight inches of snow (although it looked like more depending on where you were at). There was no way I was shoveling anymore so I decided to clean the carburetor. I got my tools, moved the snowblower and removed the cover. Then in an act of procrastination, I figured I would look up some videos as a review. The title of this video caught my eye and also the fact that the snowblower pictured looked a little older, more like the one I have. OMG - It was exactly the same situation. In a matter of minutes the snowblower was running! I cleared my driveway and sidewalk, and two of the neighbor's walks. Thank you again!
If a paper clip is too big for the jet holes, try the wire inside a twist tie from bread or stuff at the grocery store. Just peel off the plastic or paper and use the wire to gently clear the jet passages. Make sure you clean out inside of the bowl while you are doing this so that the jet does not instantly reclog itself.
Hey Steve, my son, and Daughter bought me a used Briggs and Stratton 1150 snowblower 250cc for $300.00. The left tire was flat and the right tire was flat and off the bead. And of course, the engine would not start. So, I fixed the tires and changed the spark plug. But to no avail. I still could not start my snowblower. So, I went on UA-cam and found your video (How To A CHEAT A Snow Blower To Make It RUN). So, I took the carburetor jet out and cleaned it exactly the way you showed how and I put it back together. Now my snowblower is running like a champ. So, I had to write you a comment and say thank you, Steve!
i learned something today about snowblowers without air filters and micro drills. Steve if that were my machine there would be 3 black widows coming out of the carb area. I do not miss my tecumeh engine on my Rototiller I had to fiddle with the carb every year. Love the briggs sleved engine. Just put gas stabilizer in pull and go. As always thanks for the teaching session and saving me money.
I was fortunate enough to purchase a well kept TroyBilt with electric start this spring. I stored it after running the fuel tank dry and just prepped it yesterday. Fired up right away and back in the garage it awaits the dreaded snowfall.
Man, my snowblower was running terrible. Full out on throttle and it was up& down, up& down. Mines is an 8hp briggs.15yrs old. It has the needle valve set screw up through the bowl. Took it out, and took the set screw out cleared the holes then swisher it around in some lacquer thinner. Put all back to gather made some small adjustments. It's running like new! Thank you for this video. I'm in North Dakota and Right now we need our blowers in good working order. Be well brother!
Thank you Steve! Excellent trick! My old snowblower has been in the garage 3 years, but still have not had time to take it to a shop to have it fixed. I was fixed once, but the gunk settled in the carburetor, the bulb. Now, this is exactly what I need to start it again! I will try your trick on it.
Thanks much, Steve! I did as you suggested in the third step and cleaned out the main jet, which WAS all clogged. And since your instructions are so great, I did it in a few minutes. Then it started right up!! You saved me a bunch of money, so double thanks! Alan
Great video, Steve. Show people not to be afraid basic mechanical intervention. I have to say that I have grown to love the Tecumseh Snow King engines. They are unkillable, and respond to all the most basic repair/tuning methods. Cheers from not-yet-snowy Ottawa.
I haven't checked, but I'm probably not the first one to say this. That little tiny hole above the threads, peel the paper off of a bread tie. Works perfect.
I worry about metal scoring the brass so I've used natural or plastic broom bristles and even a bristle from a tooth brush on small holes. Also aren't you supposed to not remove the main jet on some carbs and try to clean it left in place?
Yep, that'll work! Now just throw some SeaFoam in the tank to finish cleaning it out. Good video, will save a lot of blowers. BTW, a set of "torch tip cleaners" is both cheaper (go to a farm store or harbor freight welding section, used to be about $2-3) and less brittle than those micro drill bits, at least if yours are like mine... I tend to snip off the first bit of useful sizes in the torch tip cleaner set so the serrated part starts right away.
Well if it was sitting for 3 yrs, the first thing I would of done, was drain the gas, drain the oil, new plug, but I'm sure that was next on your list. Great video, good advice.
You’re the man Steve. Hasn’t worked in 2-3 years, went out and did it to mine, and it fired right up at 1:00am. My neighbors thank you too😂 I’m sure they enjoyed hearing it that late at night
I just purchased a 70’s Roper Snowblower, the seller said it before it revved high and surged and now doesn’t run. Thankfully after running this I’ll know what to do hopefully
Your cheat is very straightforward, and practical! I will use it to revive my snowblower. It also has been sitting in my garage for 3 years including winter this year.
Well, I’ve been cursing the surging on my Tecumseh motored snowblower for years. I’ll be cleaning this [hopefully] before the snow flies. Thank you, Steve. Steve, Plymouth MA USA
Nice one Steve. Carb cleaner is an essential tool these days with unleaded fuel. Anything four stroke, I shut off the fuel line and drain the bowl. Otherwise you can guarantee it will gum up.
Nice video. Good to hear from you again. Look forward to your videos. Snow coming this week in Michigan. I got my blower ready three weeks ago. Touched up the paint job. Checked the drive wheel...From a troll in Michigan.
I just cleaned my Troy builts carb and I didn’t notice the holes in the bolt, now tomorrow morning I’m going to remove the bolt and see if mine is the same as yours, great videos
Hi Steve, I like to use JB-80 instead of Carb Cleaner when doing that trick because it works as a starting fluid AND it lubricates the cylinder. I think the lubrication is especially good for an engine that's been sitting awhile...plus I think it smells good (don't laugh too hard)! ...If you have an interest, I have a video on this.
If you haven't got a torch cleaning set or a paper clip I use a bread sack tie they are usually coated with paper or plastic, just burn it off and use the wire inside works great. Its small enough to go through most jets.
Another great how-to, Steve. I have a snowblower question that you, or maybe even another subscriber can hopefully help me with. I have a Husqvarna ST 327T that I bought used last year. It runs like a champ and throws the snow great but I’ve been having issues with the steering. It’s a track machine. Problem is, when I squeeze either trigger to make it go left or right, it “misses” so to speak. You can hear the cogs on the axle clicking as if they’re not fully engaging/disengaging and it won’t turn nearly as well as it should. My neighbor and I are both pretty mechanically inclined and have both looked at it, pulling the tracks off, adjusting the cables, etc. Any ideas or direction from anyone as to what might solve the issue would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the great video once again. I have a generator that starts right up pretty much. However when I turn the choke all the way off, it cuts off. What advice do you have for the issue?
Hi Steve, for cleaning tiny jet I use a wire removed from a steel wire brush n do the job really good without need buying fragiles drill bits at high costs ! Just wanna share it w you in case you didn't already know.
Can an airlock develop in the fuel line ? We tried everything, even pressurizing the tank with air and the fuel was squirting out the primer bulb hole, the snowblower will only run if ya keep pushing the primer bulb. And a brand new carb was already installed. It’s a 10hp Tecumseh engine. Very frustrating! Help! 🤪
Your the man Steve, worked perfect. I wouldn't have known about that tiny hole in the jet above the threads and I had the pin drill set already. Started first pull!
I have a Tecumseh engine on my snowblower just like the one shown here. That mystery hose at 2:22 just to the left of the carburetor...is that supposed to be connected?
Steve...you did it again.... You can´t repair gold...platinium or money....but an investment that clears your lawn...awesome... Just some I need to tell about the Tecumseh, the floater is sometimes completely corroded....its Tecumseh...it works or doesn`t...enjoy your beer...greetings from mid Portugal...
Unfortunately the Ariens deluxe 24" snowblader I have doesn't have a jet with a bolt like yours; no holes just a bolt. I've completely cleaned the carb, it's getting fuel in the bowl and it's getting spark I've got no clue at this point except to replace the carb.
Steve last year when starting my snow blower, it revered so high that I had to to shut it off. After starting it several times it ran normal . Your thoughts . Thanks Jay
hi stevei bought your compression tool on Amazon and used it on my craftman lawn mover thats about 2 decades old still running and cutting my grass the mover reads 60psi compression - just wondering your thoughts about the low compression - 60psi ? thanks
Steve, thanks for another great video! I like your “cut to the chase” technique of using carb cleaner too. Probably safer than starting fluid, although others may disagree. The Tecumseh engines I have found to be generally easy to start, even on the coldest days. The Tecumseh “Snow King” line were great snow blower engines for sure!
Good info right there. I got a little Stihl MS180 with the same problem. I guess I'll have to take the carb off and clean it unless you have a shortcut video on that. Thanks Steve.
I came across a few 5hp Techumesh with low hours would start run a minute then die. Owners changed carbs mag s etc. I found exhaust valve had zero clearance and when motor got hot it had no compression. So watch for that on these. Now they run perfectly but no snow here anymore.
I worry about metal scoring the brass so I've used natural or plastic broom bristles and even a bristle from a tooth brush on small holes. Also aren't you supposed to not remove the main jet on some carbs and try to clean it left in place?
I always worry about using welding tip cleaners or small drill bits, a bit of old throttle cable that's frayed out to the individual wires is my go-to. Thanks as always Steve.
Hi Steve, on my 2003 walk behind snowblower, my carb leaks gas out of carb into crankcase, I'm sure the flow or needle and seat aren't any good I can't find a kit for it so I'm just going to get new carb. Problem is numbers I find on engine don't come up with same carb. Number.what do u suggest??
Mine is similar model but don't have the safety key and plate it goes in too electric start missing also I got it for free is there a way to bypass the safety key any help or advice would be appreciated by the way I'm in Michigan
Hey! That's kind of brilliant! I worry about metal scoring the brass so I've used natural or plastic broom bristles and even a bristle from a tooth brush on small holes. Also aren't you supposed to not remove the main jet on some carbs and try to clean it left in place?
I use the B and sometimes high E string from my guitar to clean the little wholes. Obviously not everyone has old guitar strings lying around but for those that may and have no small drill bits, it's an idea. 😉 I also use non ethanol fuel and ass seafoam to my small engines to help prevent them from plugging. Great video as always Steve. Maybe show folks how to pull the sheer pins and grease the auger shaft. Many people just squeeze it into the zerk. But is is best to remove the pins and spin the shaft after greasing to ensure the shaft is fully grease. 😉
Hello and thanks for the video. Do you think there is any problem in spraying the carb cleaner/starter spray into the spark plug hole rather than in the throat of carb?
Mine has a needle screw in that brass jet for adjusting fell out the other day the spring got weak. replaced it with one from an old carb that I had from another engine. I like to put a shut off valve on the fuel lines on any piece of equipment that has gravity feed fuel supply . To prevent the gas leaching into the carb past the float valve and leaking into the engine and filling the crank case with gas. I always smell the oil dipstick for that telltale gas smell .
Great short cut to get her running, I buy snowblower just to fix up for myself and I give some away. Steve that's how I get them cheap the carbs are gunked up do to ethanol gas and laziness to drain the old fuel. You the man always enjoy your informative videos and get to see what beer your drinking lol.
I use a tiny safety pin for cleaning high pressure water jet tips, and it would probably work well for that, as well. it's always good to knock something like that against the bench to get the material clogging it knocked out, too. - I always want to see the bad stuff before I assume the jet is clear.
I use a tag that holds the price tag on clothing, the nylon stem of the tag is small enough to go through most small engines main jet ,I've also got the carby jet drills ,I tend to use them on cars to clean out the windscreen washer jets
Hello Steve. I have a Troy-Bilt blower that was purchased in 2014 it was never used or attempted to be started., I checked the oil that came in it and also added fuel to the tank it will not start. What could the problem be?
A twist tie (Twisties) works well after stripping the plastic off the wire for cleaning the jets out. Seems to be about the right gauge. Good luck folks.
Steve, I am a subscriber to your video's. I have an old Wheel Horse tractor. It's an 85, the year before TORO took over totally. I turned it into a good snow plow. It has that "Hydro Static" transmission in it. Reverse gear is really slow. I' have adjusted the 5/8 nut above the transmission to give it maximum hydraulic flow, it's still slow in reverse. Forward is very fast. Do you have any suggestions how to make it go in reverse faster? Thanks to you and readers who can help.
Steven and April, good vid. Down in Florida, Tampa area. We're under a hard freeze advisory. Used to live up in shy town, thank God I'm not there no more. Just wanted to wish you and Mama a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!
Another nice little tool to clean ports, an ox-acetylene tip cleaning kit. Multiple sizes all contained in it's case. Inexpensive, HF or a welding supply house, big box store.
Thank you very much, Steve! Your tip worked like a charm on ma 10-year old Toro with B&S engine that wouldn’t start. It runs now, but I can hear some “cracking” couple times a minute. What would be a reason for that? Old fuel or something else?
I may have missed something. So you are saying that this sat for three years, and ran with three-year-old gas in it, or did you replace the gas too? You made reference to old gas in the beginning, but not sure you said one way or the other? Thanks
My MTD with Tecumseh LH195SP ran like a champ last week when I didn't really need it. Now I have 3 foot drifts and it wont stay running. Nothing ever works when you actually need it to. Gas lines are clean, bottom jet/bolt thing is clean, new gas, new spark plug, just flat out refuses to run. It starts, then dies after about 3 seconds. My problem: The primer line was cracked, deteriorated and rotted off at primer bulb. I got a new primer line and it runs like a champ again. Evidently it was sucking air and not wanting to run.

I have a Husqvarna ST 327T that I bought used last year. It runs like a champ and throws the snow great but I’ve been having issues with the steering. It’s a track machine. Problem is, when I squeeze either trigger to make it go left or right, it “misses” so to speak. I use a torch tip cleaner. Works great for all different size jets
Thanks for the great video once again. I have a generator that starts right up pretty much. However when I turn the choke all the way off, it cuts off. What advice do you have for the issue?
Your idle jet is probably plugged. Look up cleaning a Honda or Briggs or whatever carb you have.
I will for sure be trying this. I mounted an old snowblower engine on a wood splitter. It ran about 15 minutes and just died and won't restart.
Hi Steve, for cleaning tiny jet I use a wire removed from a steel wire brush n do the job really good without need buying fragiles drill bits at high costs !

Great point!
Just bought old ariens snow blower Steve thank you
You're Welcome...
I always worry about using welding tip cleaners or small drill bits, a bit of old throttle cable that's frayed out to the individual wires is my go-to. Thanks as always Steve.
my ariens started right up ,,its oiled,, serviced ready to go ,,hope it scares the snow away lol
It's a briggs 9hp intek sno927
Mine is similar model but don't have the safety key and plate it goes in too electric start missing also I got it for free is there a way to bypass the safety key any help or advice would be appreciated by the way I'm in Michigan
I always put the bolt jet thingy in my ultra sonic cleaner, along with any other small parts
Love the idea of using forceps on the fuel hose!
I'm always draining the gas tank, and still spilling gasoline everywhere.
Thank you!
Best wire to use to clean the jet, wire holding the needle to the float.Another great video.
Great tip!
Hey!
That's kind of brilliant!

Hi Steve I have been thinking about getting an ultrasonic cleaner, what kind of cleaning solution do you use?
I have videos for that in my playlist!
Can I use sea foam as a cylinder fogger for my snow blower
Gotta love an easy fix. Yep "snug" is exactly the correct torque spec for that. Lol Excellent as always brother.
Right on
“Snug” can also be translated as 1/4 or 25% of 1 ugga dugga
@@WikkedR1 You beat me to it. Sounds like Puddin' of puddin' s fab shop.
That’s usually what I do at work as well. A good sign to find out if you need a new carb or cleaning.
I have a craftsman snowblower with a Briggs motor. I bought a replacement carb and the fuel leaks out of the breather tube when it runs. Help!
Great video -- welder's tip cleaners are a handy item for this also
I haven't come across one with the tiny hole above the tread, but good to know. Thanks
How do you ass seafoam
Twist ties from bread bags work well. Take the paper type stuff off the outside and use the wire to clean that hole.
Hello and thanks for the video. Do you think there is any problem in spraying the carb cleaner/starter spray into the spark plug hole rather than in the throat of carb?
I do it all the time!
No snow yet in Utah. BUT same type snow blower. Will try with new gas. Will see. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!
You're Welcome...
Hello , can you please tell me the best place to purchase replacement air filters for my Jonsred 2171 and 2172 chainsaws. Thank you
Find a Husky dealer, pretty much the same as a 372
@@jackgrimshaw9355 Thank you
Would a few minutes in an ultrasonic cleaner clean it out.. or would that mess with the specs?
Great short cut to get her running, I buy snowblower just to fix up for myself and I give some away. Steve that's how I get them cheap the carbs are gunked up do to ethanol gas and laziness to drain the old fuel. You the man always enjoy your informative videos and get to see what beer your drinking lol.
Right on Kenny!
Steve, Nice tip thanks ! All the best to you and yours.
I use a tiny safety pin for cleaning high pressure water jet tips, and it would probably work well for that, as well. it's always good to knock something like that against the bench to get the material clogging it knocked out, too. - I always want to see the bad stuff before I assume the jet is clear.
I like to keep a good assortment of sewing needles in my tool box as well
@@RobWenzel84 advantage of the safety pin is when you close it, it hangs on a hook, and it has a built in handle.
@@kenbrown2808 I didn't think of that, I guess I'm gonna order an assortment of safty pins as well
@Rob Wenzel of course the hook feature won't help in a tool box... the needles probably have a finer point, too.
If you have a tip cleaning set for a torch they work well too to clean it out
I am so grateful for your help with so many things
Thank You...
Mechanical difficulty level zero !! wow I'm in. Great Video.
Glad you liked it!
Thank you so much. I'll try to fix mine
You're Welcome...
How do you get the heavy stuff on your bench?
I have to use BOTH arms!
Tecumseh by far has some of the easiest carburetors to work on, and that is one reason why these engines are my favorite.
Good job Stevo
Good info to know. 👍🏻Thank you. I do wonder how you get that big snow blower up on your counter though.
Torch tip cleaners are great for cleaning out carb jets too
I may have missed something. So you are saying that this sat for three years, and ran with three-year-old gas in it, or did you replace the gas too? You made reference to old gas in the beginning, but not sure you said one way or the other? Thanks
The tank was empty when I got it!
This is a timely post, were you in my shop yesterday lol great info man
Jets... gotta love them. Who is this Mick guy? Does he have a channel?
Rumour has it that he has a channel and maybe a wish list?😊
