Easy way to clean a metal Briggs carberator
Carb Spray is also Called Ethyl Ether or Starting Fluid
I worry about metal scoring the brass so I've used natural or plastic broom bristles and even a bristle from a tooth brush on small holes.
Also aren't you supposed to not remove the main jet on some carbs and try to clean it left in place?
I bought an old ariens snowblower at an estate sale. My wife called it a pos that will never run. After watching this video let's just say we proved her wrong! Thanks Steve!
Right on Scottie!
@Sottie D, in your eyes, you proved her wrong, But after 38 years of marriage..... I've found my wife is only 'mistaken' ! Some points ain't worth making! Lol
@@JohnSmith-tv5ep Any chance I get John. I don't have to use Google as she knows it all! LOL
@@downunderdave5417 Smart woman! I would venture to say then,. She's a great... "financial advisor and/or planner" also??
I have been married 12 years and I know how my wife thinks..... When she heard it running I didn't say anything I just looked at her and smiled!
Always building my competence when I watch you performing magic on engines.
Right on
If a paper clip is too big for the jet holes, try the wire inside a twist tie from bread or stuff at the grocery store. Just peel off the plastic or paper and use the wire to gently clear the jet passages. Make sure you clean out inside of the bowl while you are doing this so that the jet does not instantly reclog itself.
Also, a tiny sewing needle might work.
Thank you so much! This was exactly the situation that I had with my Craftsman 5/22 snowblower. My father originally bought it back in the mid 90's. I had only ever cleaned the carburetor once (bought a kit as well) when my mother still owned it and I used it for clearing her long, double-wide driveway.
After I inherited it, I kept in the shed out back in the summer and in my garage in the winter where it would be handy. I did the routine maintenance and always ran it for a while before moving it between seasons. In 2022, I had run it in the fall when moving it to the garage but then when I needed it after a heavy snowfall, it would not run! I dreaded having to get the kit and clean the carburetor so it has sit in the garage since. This year after several days of snow and shoveling every day, we finally had a snowstorm that dumped eight inches of snow (although it looked like more depending on where you were at). There was no way I was shoveling anymore so I decided to clean the carburetor. I got my tools, moved the snowblower and removed the cover. Then in an act of procrastination, I figured I would look up some videos as a review. The title of this video caught my eye and also the fact that the snowblower pictured looked a little older, more like the one I have.
OMG - It was exactly the same situation. In a matter of minutes the snowblower was running! I cleared my driveway and sidewalk, and two of the neighbor's walks.
Thank you again!
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Steve is the best, most informative small engine mechanic I have ever seen. LOVE his videos!
WOW! Thank You...
I was fortunate enough to purchase a well kept TroyBilt with electric start this spring. I stored it after running the fuel tank dry and just prepped it yesterday. Fired up right away and back in the garage it awaits the dreaded snowfall.
Steve, Nice tip thanks ! All the best to you and yours.
Nice video. Good to hear from you again. Look forward to your videos. Snow coming this week in Michigan. I got my blower ready three weeks ago. Touched up the paint job. Checked the drive wheel...From a troll in Michigan.
This is a timely post, were you in my shop yesterday lol great info man
Thanks Steve. Your tips are very helpful - love your channel.
You're Welcome...
As usual, another awesome video. Thanks again Steve!
My pleasure!
Thank you Steve! Excellent trick! My old snowblower has been in the garage 3 years, but still have not had time to take it to a shop to have it fixed. I was fixed once, but the gunk settled in the carburetor, the bulb. Now, this is exactly what I need to start it again!
I will try your trick on it.
Very good video Steve!
Many thanks!
Thank You Steve,! Keep up the good work!
Thanks, will do!
Very helpful video thanks Steve
Very welcome
i learned something today about snowblowers without air filters and micro drills. Steve if that were my machine there would be 3 black widows coming out of the carb area. I do not miss my tecumeh engine on my Rototiller I had to fiddle with the carb every year. Love the briggs sleved engine. Just put gas stabilizer in pull and go. As always thanks for the teaching session and saving me money.
Great video, Steve. Show people not to be afraid basic mechanical intervention. I have to say that I have grown to love the Tecumseh Snow King engines. They are unkillable, and respond to all the most basic repair/tuning methods. Cheers from not-yet-snowy Ottawa.
Right on
Thank you! Great trick! 👍🏻👍🏻👏👏👏❤️❤️
Steven and April, good vid. Down in Florida, Tampa area. We're under a hard freeze advisory. Used to live up in shy town, thank God I'm not there no more. Just wanted to wish you and Mama a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!
My snowblower is doing the same thing. Can't wait to try this fix! Thank you for posting this video!!
Good luck!
Haven't seen you in a while Steve. I hope everything is going well for you. Great video.
Fantastic fix Steve! I would never have known that and how simple it is to do. Thanks! 👍👍
Glad to help
I like your honesty and most of all your personality, I just subscribed. Thanx 4 the vid information. Happy New Year 2023.
Thanks for the sub!
You just added to my mechanics knowledge and I thank you! I subscribed! Thank you !
Awesome, thank you!
Good info right there. I got a little Stihl MS180 with the same problem. I guess I'll have to take the carb off and clean it unless you have a shortcut video on that. Thanks Steve.
Awesome stuff! Thank you!!!
My pleasure!
Thanks Steve. I always learn something new
You're Welcome...
Your cheat is very straightforward, and practical! I will use it to revive my snowblower. It also has been sitting in my garage for 3 years including winter this year.
Thanks for the video Steve 👍✅❤️ it
You're Welcome...
I am so grateful for your help with so many things
Thank You...
Nice easy fix. Thanks for posting.
Glad to help
Love your videos Steve!
Thank You...
I haven't checked, but I'm probably not the first one to say this. That little tiny hole above the threads, peel the paper off of a bread tie. Works perfect.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
You got that bad boy run'n again...👍🏾
Thanks for sharing.
You're Welcome...
Good job Stevo
Steve out is awesome good tips thank you
You're Welcome...
Steve does it again! Thanks for the information on this video. STEVE OUT ! Cheers 🍻
Any time!
Nice one Steve. Carb cleaner is an essential tool these days with unleaded fuel. Anything four stroke, I shut off the fuel line and drain the bowl. Otherwise you can guarantee it will gum up.
Had the same problem with mine but the float was sticking. Good video
Thanks Steve.
You're Welcome...
Thank you so much. I'll try to fix mine
You're Welcome...
Muchas gracias from Texas, Steve! Got a pressure washer with the same no run symptoms. I'll have to put your technique to work this weekend.
good luck
Thanks Steve
You're Welcome...
Cheers!🍺
OMG, it worked!! Just liked you said it would!!! My Tecumseh is ready to blow again, I'm so excited and waiting for some snow. Thanks for the tip.
Glad I could help!
Thanks Steve! That was it...and fast!
You're Welcome...
Great top. Thanks again! Simple fix for the non-mechanical.person.
You're Welcome...
Good show! I've used that before just to get the engine running to see if there are other issues. Then proceed from there.
Great point!
I always worry about using welding tip cleaners or small drill bits, a bit of old throttle cable that's frayed out to the individual wires is my go-to. Thanks as always Steve.
Your the man Steve, worked perfect. I wouldn't have known about that tiny hole in the jet above the threads and I had the pin drill set already. Started first pull!
Glad it helped
That's a very timely video 😉👍
Right on
Great video! Great tip!
Thank You...Thank You...
Great video -- welder's tip cleaners are a handy item for this also
Steve that was too easy to make it work, great video 😀
Thank You...
I used twist tie wire and it worked on my old Craftsman! Thanks!!
Nice work!
You are very knowledgeable. You are very helpful.
Thank You...
I dont know alot about engines, but that is good info, Thanx Steve!!
Glad to help
my ariens started right up ,,its oiled,, serviced ready to go ,,hope it scares the snow away lol
Thank you 👍
You are welcome
Thanks Steve.
Life doesn't have to be complicated.
I agree!
Awesome, good job!
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks!
Welcome!
A twist tie (Twisties) works well after stripping the plastic off the wire for cleaning the jets out. Seems to be about the right gauge. Good luck folks.
That was great. Thanks Steve, I'm going to join you with a similar beverage.
Sounds good!
Well, I’ve been cursing the surging on my Tecumseh motored snowblower for years. I’ll be cleaning this [hopefully] before the snow flies. Thank you, Steve.
Steve, Plymouth MA USA
Hey Steve, my son, and Daughter bought me a used Briggs and Stratton 1150 snowblower 250cc for $300.00. The left tire was flat and the right tire was flat and off the bead. And of course, the engine would not start. So, I fixed the tires and changed the spark plug. But to no avail. I still could not start my snowblower. So, I went on UA-cam and found your video (How To A CHEAT A Snow Blower To Make It RUN). So, I took the carburetor jet out and cleaned it exactly the way you showed how and I put it back together. Now my snowblower is running like a champ. So, I had to write you a comment and say thank you, Steve!
You're Welcome...
Another great video. Simple and easy fix. Next video needs to be harder so you can have a full beer 🍺 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Good idea! LOL...
If you haven't got a torch cleaning set or a paper clip I use a bread sack tie they are usually coated with paper or plastic, just burn it off and use the wire inside works great. Its small enough to go through most jets.
I use a torch tip cleaner. Works great for all different size jets
Yep, that'll work! Now just throw some SeaFoam in the tank to finish cleaning it out. Good video, will save a lot of blowers.
BTW, a set of "torch tip cleaners" is both cheaper (go to a farm store or harbor freight welding section, used to be about $2-3) and less brittle than those micro drill bits, at least if yours are like mine... I tend to snip off the first bit of useful sizes in the torch tip cleaner set so the serrated part starts right away.
You’re the man Steve. Hasn’t worked in 2-3 years, went out and did it to mine, and it fired right up at 1:00am. My neighbors thank you too😂
I’m sure they enjoyed hearing it that late at night
Nice person, niece and clear explanation. Thanks for your time and goodwill to heilp us.God bless you
It's my pleasure
thanks. this is great.
You're welcome!
Just bought old ariens snow blower Steve thank you
You're Welcome...
Thanks for the video Steve that's what I'm going to have to do to mine the night or two three years electric and Paul don't work I've been tired of shoveling and paying so I'm going to give her a look as well as check out your other videos thanks for the help and keep up the good job home of FX Matt's beer 🍺
Well if it was sitting for 3 yrs, the first thing I would of done, was drain the gas, drain the oil, new plug, but I'm sure that was next on your list. Great video, good advice.
Thank you
Welcome!
Steve...you did it again.... You can´t repair gold...platinium or money....but an investment that clears your lawn...awesome... Just some I need to tell about the Tecumseh, the floater is sometimes completely corroded....its Tecumseh...it works or doesn`t...enjoy your beer...greetings from mid Portugal...
Steve, you’re the best!!!!
Thank You...
I don’t know what I would do without you! Thank you for all of your videos! If I ever go up north, I owe you a few beers my friend!
I will for sure be trying this. I mounted an old snowblower engine on a wood splitter. It ran about 15 minutes and just died and won't restart.
Good easy fix 👍
Right on
Good info to know. 👍🏻Thank you. I do wonder how you get that big snow blower up on your counter though.
Another nice little tool to clean ports, an ox-acetylene tip cleaning kit. Multiple sizes all contained in it's case. Inexpensive, HF or a welding supply house, big box store.
Good seeing you bud
Great tip👍🏻 done that cheat myself a few times! Also, if you need something tiny for the really small holes, snip a bristle from a wire brush!
I agree!
I worry about metal scoring the brass so I've used natural or plastic broom bristles and even a bristle from a tooth brush on small holes.
Also aren't you supposed to not remove the main jet on some carbs and try to clean it left in place?
@4.09
wheatsheaf liquors. LOL
Great short cut to get her running, I buy snowblower just to fix up for myself and I give some away. Steve that's how I get them cheap the carbs are gunked up do to ethanol gas and laziness to drain the old fuel. You the man always enjoy your informative videos and get to see what beer your drinking lol.
Right on Kenny!
Steve you got lucky with lucky beer. great informitive video
You got that right!
I always put the bolt jet thingy in my ultra sonic cleaner, along with any other small parts
You would think we would run out of video subjects about small engines but, nooooo. Thanks for doin what you do, Stave.
More to come!
Hi once again from Calgary Steve! Those old Tecumseh engines are decent engines, but man are they ever loud. There were also a few models with a defect in the main jet, it ran too lean at -30 (Tecumseh in their wisdom tried to meet emissions by just making the jet smaller and leaning it out). So I always kept the adjustable jets from older scrapped mowers just in case I needed to put in a jet that can be richened or leaned out on the fly by hand. Tecumseh parts have been becoming more and more difficult to find since they went out of business. I see yet again you are having a Yucky Lager, lol. I will continue to bug you about that. ;) Cheers!
Thanks for the help! Snowblower is running. Appreciate your humor;)
Any time!
I never knew bout that tiny little hole in there, thank you for sharing this
Happy to help
Nice hack there young man 👍😎
Nice crocs😂😂
Time to switch to my "winter" crocs!
Steve, thanks for another great video! I like your “cut to the chase” technique of using carb cleaner too. Probably safer than starting fluid, although others may disagree. The Tecumseh engines I have found to be generally easy to start, even on the coldest days. The Tecumseh “Snow King” line were great snow blower engines for sure!
Great point!
I just cleaned my Troy builts carb and I didn’t notice the holes in the bolt, now tomorrow morning I’m going to remove the bolt and see if mine is the same as yours, great videos
Good luck!
