It is sad that such a proud vessel is now laid up, rusting away, her hull an empty skeleton. Someone should get their crap together and restore her to her former glory, when she roamed the seas with Jacques at the helm.
The Calypso was always to small for blue water, it was designed to be used as a coastal vessel for the Royal Navy, not to sail through heavy seas like in this video!
@@adriennefoster7775 thanks for the reply, wrong, this little vessel was built on the US West Coast, maybe originally for the US Navy, but the Royal Navy were in desperate need of small ships, so it was used in the Mediterranean based in Malta during WW 2, as a mine-sweeper, Jacques Cousteau acquired it, and converted it into the research vessel and named it Calypso.
The calypso was originally a YMS boat. I have been on one of her sisters and this video doesn’t do justice of how big these waves are. The YMS CLASS ships 140 ft long ocean going twin engine minesweeper, they are proper little ships. The bow is easily 20 ft from waterline to deck. Most of the YMS ships are long gone but the few seaworthy ones are the uchuck 3, the Marabell, and the calysto.
What a ship. I love this vessel.
This ship vessel is AWESOME!!
Vraiment c’est magiques la calypso
Interesting to see her original wheelhouse and beautiful sweeping sheer.

It was restored and the hull is wooden not steel!
@@strietermarinesurvey1415 The restore was never finished, and everything on the boat was replaced,so what is left is a replica
Wooden boats, iron men.
that's true pal
We never missed there show came on about them I remember when his son was killed on a Expedition.we learn slot about the oceans
a lot
We would ride the bow like this...in "medium" seas like this. When we encountered stronger seas, which we did, then we wouldn't dare.
what was the crewman in the bow pulpit thinking ? Venturing out there with out being clipped in.
note to self clip 1:27 =-)
the lazy dog is funny ...
I was wondering if he was seasick..
