- Are you overdue a wardrobe cull? Let’s say goodbye to what no longer serves us in today’s Closet Confessions. The timing couldn’t be better for a fresh start - not only is it January, but we’re about to host our biannual clothes swap at Trinny London HQ, so I’ve been raiding my wardrobe for pieces I think should go to a new home. When deciding what to keep and what to give away, there are a few key points to consider. If the cut, colour, fabric or style of a piece no longer works for the woman you are today, pass it on to someone who will truly cherish it…

I’d just add a note of caution that although many of us put on weight in our mid years, we lose it again in our 60s so I’ve had a lot of enjoyment in wearing things that I haven’t fit in 20 years. Keep your favorites.
This happened to me, too. At age 62, I’m 35 lbs. lighter than at my peak weight in my early 50s. I’m so glad I kept the best (like silk dresses) “too tight” items, they fit again. I do regret donating my top-quality, classic blazers when I retired, I just can’t find that quality today, everything is lined with polyester, even a lot of designers use it. I just can’t wear polyester, I’m holding out for those 100% wool ones with breathable linings. Happily, I just found one at Banana Republic (rayon lined, it’s great), the only brand that seems to be listening to its customers. To all brands: we don’t want plastic clothes, I, for one, just won’t buy them!🙂
This happened to me too in my late 50’s. I now weigh what I did in my 20’s and it’s taken a bit of getting used to mentally. I’m glad I kept some of my favourite pieces over the years in my “vault” , especially the designer ones as I can wear them again now.
I totally agree with this advice. I kept many of my clothes simply because I bought them and I love them. I have my Betsey Johnson with the punk label from the late 70s/ early 80s as well as my beautiful dresses from merry go round, sweaters and outfits from Express, etc.. I only wish I had kept every single thing. I intend to get into my attic to my vintage collection as soon as I can and if any of them fit me I will wear them. I adore them. An exchange swap would not work with me and my friends because they don’t spend the kind of money on clothes that I have and still do , unfortunately. I wish they did, lol!

Coming in over a year later, so no-one will read this, but I REALLY hope this is true. I'm 63, have been losing weight post-retirement -- quite naturally -- and am now starting to actually diet. Am really hoping that I will get back down to what I was in my early 40s, late 30s. I too still have a box of 'tiny vintage' that I just couldn't bear to part with, and I'm haunted by a bunch of great stuff that I gave away.
It would be cool to see your clothes then on the people who nabbed them to see how it suits them more.

Personally, when traveling, I buy Christmas ornaments. It's enjoyable pulling them out once a year and remembering our time where each was found ❤️
Great tip about holiday purchases! I am travelling through India at the moment and have to constantly remind myself that the gorgeousness in the shops here does not translate well to black-is-the-new-black Melbourne. I've made that mistake way too many times already! 😅
Love the idea of a clothes swap. Wouldn't work for me as sadly Trinny is a completely different shape to me but those girls who work with her are so lucky.

Such a good way of giving clothes a second life; I love it. I too would like to see a follow up if the girls at the office wouldn't mind showing how they style their Trinny item of clothing. I can see the Boden rainbow dress I bought after seeing Trinny and Chloe in it. It looked awful in the bust so I got it made into a skirt and made a headband from the excess fabric. It looks amazing like that. I love it. Maybe instead of stopping yourself from shopping, you could look into the charity Smart Works which gives new life to clothes for professional women and women returning to work who can’t afford new work clothes. You could even help them with some styling!

I don't think I've ever bought an item of clothing on holiday in my life. Too busy seeing the sights to waste time shopping! I always like to do something different on holiday to what I would do at home.
I always wonder who actually makes a clothes swap work. All of my friends are quite different shapes, sizes and heights. And have quite different styles too.
I love that yellow zara top with the silver edged collar. I loved it when you first got it and still love it now.
Much as Iike shopping I never shop on holiday either.
I like to check out local offerings in stalls etc rather than in big malls - it doesn't take much time if you're already doing something nearby. For example, I have some skirts I picked up near a roadside food stand, & also a dress I spied on the way back from an island whilst waiting for others to board the boat.
All that to say, whilst I probably wouldn't dedicate itinerary time to shopping, I do enjoy people watching whilst on holiday & slowing down to see how locals live their everyday life (not always doing an 'activity' per se). So I find that to be the perfect time to shop - not just for myself but also for souvenirs to bring home to others! (Others may wish to allocate a day to a specific mall or outdoor activity & that's ok too - we all travel in different ways!)
We have an informal group of friends that does a swap a couple of times per year. There are enough of us in a wide range of sizes in our 40s and 50s that it works! And we bring along accessories etc., and there are also items that others have given to me that I've accepted because I'll take it to the next swap. And sometimes we buy total bargains at thrift stores that are too good to pass up because someone will love it at the swap!

So helpful! I've found that identifying an era that you like the style of can be really helpful too! I really like the 40's for the menswear inspired tailoring and classic colors, and the 50's for the bright color palettes!

Twice a year I do a clothes 'swish' where friends give me their old clothes and I sell everything for £1 each and do tea and cakes (donation). It's a great social event, we raise money for charity (£280 for Ukraine last one), sustainable shopping and little organisation as all money just goes in an honesty pot. By the way that brown coat of Trinnys is the best! Also holiday purchases are the worse - I told my partner to stop me if I ever wanted to buy a kaftan or those dropped crutch trousers. I find jewellery is a better bet.

I hosted a clothing swap and all my friends loved it so much. We plan on doing it twice a year. Someone's trash is somebody else's treasure. Great video!

We used to do a cloths swap back in my old design studio in 2005 ,.. we also were living from paycheck to paycheck in nyc so it was a godsend and was such a fun chatty / girly time,.. the men would run away quickly as we took over the office
Great idea to set up a clothes swap in a work environment! 👍👍 I’m also doing 6 “no buy” months this year to try to curb my spending habits, which will be for clothes, cosmetics, shoes and accessories. I will start in February and have one every other month after that. I loved the idea about secondhand only but we just don’t have second hand stores where I live, they’re not a thing in Spain yet 🙁

This is brilliant, I really needed this video. I actually culled my shoes last night because I was literally annoyed with myself for how many I owned that don't fit me. I tackled my wardrobe a few months ago but I know I could let go of more. I'm going to take all your tips on board. It's all about just being honest with ourselves but isn't it?

I had the same situation with a silk blouse that was cream not a good color for me, I dyed it navy blue and it turned out fabulous. I used Rite Liquid dyed.

I just watched your 6 year old decluttering video prior to this one- and I wonder how many of those pieces you still have now- especially since they all looked fabulous on you. You make me ❤ fashion and want to buy more- even though my life would be easier if I owned and had to look after less. Just another of life’s dilemmas 😊. And I have both the smaller size I keep cos I love, and the larger size which I know looks fab on me if I ever get fat again only cos it is time consuming, less fun shopping, and harder to find pieces which flatter our body shape when we carry excess weight 😂.

Don’t rule out dyeing clothes that don’t suit - so much easier these days with washing machine dyes 😀

However, with my 5'11" frame, I struggle to find items that fit me, especially when trying to stay away from fast fashion and new clothes. That Zara faux leather dress is classic in my opinion, and ageless as I think Trinny has said. I really wish I had got one. Lesson, go straight to checkout online and stop dithering.
Actually - about that comment that you're never going to get shorter.... I'm here to tell you that in about 10 to 15 years, you're probably going to shrink a bit. It could be as much as a few inches. It just happens with age. (And I'm speaking as someone who didn't have any extra height to spare in the first place: 5'0" down to 4'10." )
OMG...you hit all the excuses on the nose. I did do the length. I absolutely can not wear anything but a midi dress. So I got rid of all dresses that were at the knee and shorter. I only kept the a-line that I use around the house to clean.
This last summer I decided to try wearing more long dresses, I bought several second hand and at the end of summer I donated the shorter dresses I had in my closet. My preference has changed, my style has evolved, I am not hanging on to clothing I don't like any more.

I love these. I am 61 and retired and so have less disposable income. My main dressing challenge is being a size 16 with ankles that swell. Any suggestions?
@Jenny Foster Have you had a chance to try out a Capsule Wardrobe for a season? Where the number of garments you commonly wear for that season is reduced (suits less disposable income) - and the number of potential outfit combinations is boosted. Because your new buys, together with what you already own, have been planned out to suit your lifestyle and personal preferences. /I believe with swelling and fluid retention there can be many contributing factors. From genetics to exercise choices, from climate to diet, from medication side effects to an underlying health condition. Perhaps start with your doctor and see what they suggest?
