Just my two cents - I'd definitely avoid wearing cream or even a very light beige to a wedding! It's too close to white and could be considered a serious breach of wedding etiquette.
Yes! It's not just white wedding guest should avoid. It's also ecru/ cream. Not every bride wants to wear pure white dress because she can not look good in it.
Really don’t get people’s need to dress in anything that could look as white in a photo anywhere near a bride. Including silver and light gold!! I knew a mother of the groom that wore silver to her son’s wedding. It was so awful. They are literally so many other colors.
I was looking for guest dresses and noticed even light pink can come off too white! It's summer and hot and I'm looking for lighter colors but some colors can come off close in different lighting
Loved these examples, for me it's always a bit tricky to find a dress that is elegant enough but not too prom-y and also doesn't look like a bridesmaid's dress :))
I have this problem too. It can be especially difficult as a petite woman to find something that makes me look like an adult rather than a teenager going to prom.
Yes, neutrals and muted tones tend to be particularly elegant, and bright colours can look garish and cheap, depending on the fabric. However, bright coloured, high-quality garments may really suit the joyous spirit of a wedding. I find that my colour choice depends on the season and the location. Whenever the sun shines brightly and/or I spend time in Mediterranean countries, I am drawn to bright colours. Sometimes, neutrals and muted colours actually depress me.
@@rosej9686 in Australia now, brides are starting to dictate colour schemes for guests. Is this a thing elsewhere? My goodness, it makes the whole process so much harder! You now have to consider venue, dress code, weather, colours that suit you AND the “allowed” colours. Not to mention they often seem oblivious to what is available in store 🤦♀️
What outstanding suggestions! I couldn’t agree more with each of them. The older one gets, the more difficult it becomes to find appropriate wedding attire since it is usually young people getting married and their friends attending. It can be tricky to appear sophisticated!
Lots of good advice here. I once observed a wedding party at a hotel I was staying at. The woman who stood out (in a sea of sorbet colours and prints and big hats) wore a dark blue skirt suit. The jacket was not the corporate blazer style we see all the time now, but a slim-fitting 1950's style jacket that came in at the waist. She wore no hat and her only decoration was a white carnation buttonhole. Absolute class.
@user-im3os5xf8i Sometimes, they suit the outfit, the venue, or occasion. Things have become so casual that people will actually glare at those who don't conform.
@@olga.methodologist I don't agree. I don't love fascinators. To me, they often look cheap and are worn badly. A beautiful hat can complete an outfit, and look very elegant
I love florals for daytime, bright colors in satin or velvet for evening look beautiful on my dark skin. Huge fan of ruffles and draping and anything romantic for a wedding. I usually wear modest silhouettes, so fancy occasions are my favorite for puffy/swishy/girly cupcake silhouettes 😍
Lydia!! I’ve been watching your videos for a few years now… thank you for this new year of videos that are like this! Your advice is supreme and timeless ❤I love how your not doing a bunch of hauls, keeping them rare and classic! ❤you go girl!!!! From USA 🇺🇸

Thank you sooo much, this video is exactly what I’ve been waiting for! Attending a wedding this June, got the dress, shoes, and bag, but I’m unsure on the fascinator that’s in my cart. Being super petite at 4’11” I want my outfit to look cohesive because of my size but not too matchy-matchy. Been referring to my Pinterest boards for inspiration but you just gave me the final word on the hat. Btw, this format with pictures on the side totally rocks! And, Lydia, Elegance is your name and sophistication is your game. Thanks again!
This is great! Thank you! I also really appreciate how you started your video right away without saying “let’s get on with it.” That line (or one like it) slows the flow of your video. Todays was perfect!
Where I live ( a rather rural area of the U.S.) I've been to weddings where the bride has spent a fortune on her dress, the groom has a stunning tuxedo and yet many of the guests have come wearing jeans and t-shirts or cargo shorts and tank tops! (No I'm not kidding!) When I attend a wedding I try to look chic but not stand out in the crowd....Unfortunately, I often do stand out because I'm one of the few that have dressed appropriately for a wedding! LOVED your video 🥰🥰 I have a wedding to attend this summer...these tips will come in handy.
Depends on what the bride and groom wants. Got sent an invitation stating it was a formal wear. And if you ask what attire they will let you know. I'm going to one this weekend where they stated you can wear casuals. But I grew up on class and knowing how to dress appropriately to weddings. My husband's side of the family has no fashion sense. I think going in jeans is not cool and I stated that to him, but did not understand the concept.
I always learn from you! I tell my daughter all the time that 'my stylist" (you) recommends ....... She laughs but she know exactly who I'm referring to (you) hahahaha....Thank you!
Even if already stated, ladies, never wear white, cream, ivory or beige to a wedding. You'll only embarrass the bride and yourselves unless it is the mandated theme.
I love your videos! The weddings that I have attended in the Northeast US (I am in my 60's) have almost always had a band or DJ at the reception. I always wear a sleeveless dress since I spend most of the time on the dance floor :)
I think that the venue & the vibe of the event will be what determines what you should wear. In California we do a lot of vineyard & outdoor weddings so you’d definitely want to pass on the stilettos.
Thanks Lydia, I am going to a wedding in September which is Spring in Australia. So your tips are excellent. I have to watch the shoes as I am in my 70s! But still want stylish. Will go for a kitten or block heel.
Wonderful guidelines but hope you don't mind me adding another; if there is a possibility you will be in a photo with a bride who is wearing white do not choose a very light shade in a garment as it can read as a white depending upon environment, whether the photos will be in black and white rather color etc.
I can only speak for myself and the culture I grew up in, but wearing cream, ivory and even light silver or pink are colours reserved for the bride. Wearing any of these colours would be considered offensive. Maybe your guide is only applicable in your culture only because many cultures would not consider cream appropriate.
You did an outstanding job of providing beautiful ideas for wedding guest outfits. I love the blue and brown and the sophisticated dress options. Could I wear a linen suit for a summer wedding? Are there any wedding plans in your future?
Omg Lydia you nailed it with jumpsuits 🙈 I wore a beautiful Navy one to a really elevated evening and got into the WC and realised I had to struggle with the Zipper down and then up again 🙈 had to come out and ask another lady to unzip me to use bathroom so embarrassing. Hi am going to a wedding at the green cathedral in nederlands basicly its outside in a forest!! So exciting...thinking of wearing a longer smart fawn mac with a colourfull dress with applied flowers. ...? No hat xxxxx
I can get behind most of your tips but colour and pattern(size) are very much dependent on the person and culture as well. Some people don’t look good in muted colours even less so in an earthy palette. Same goes for bigger or smaller patterns. If we’re assuming a traditional white wedding I would suggest to stay away from any solid pale colour that could be confused with white, when overexposed to light. Also don’t wear something too dark because most men will probably be in a suit and if the ladies wear black, navy, charcoal gray and forest green the pictures might look a bit dull and moody😅 or if they print them in black and white it might look like a funeral.
Those colours might suit you and your skin / hair / eyes, but not most people, it’s best to do a colour analysis to understand the colours that look best on you, and a summer wedding is the perfect chance to have a bit of fun and actually wear some colour

I think what I meant more was natural colours (things like greens, blues) rather than things that feel a little bit brash like purples and pinks together. Or if you want to wear a colour then go for the block colour rather than pattered - I think any colour works for that!
One thing to remember when choosing a hat: proportion is very height-dependant. Tall women look great with a wide brimmed hat. Shorter women can rock a daintier version. The reverse can look ridiculous.

I am a witness at my brothers wedding in May and bloody hell trying to find something is hard. I just hate most of these type of event dresses. 😷 And I also don´t like spending money on clothing I´ll likely wear once, but I also don´t like to spend money on bad fabrics..
Hi Lydia! Thanks for the tips! Great timing! Can you suggest some ideas for hot and humid weather? And how to cover up a strappy dress besides using a shawl or scarf?
Never, *ever* wear a red dress to a wedding if the bride is Chinese. I have a cousin whose wife is Chinese. I attended their wedding - she wore a Western-style white dress for the ceremony, but for the reception, she changed into a traditional Chinese wedding dress. Traditional wedding dresses in China are red - a colour that is associated with good luck in China.
Great video. You didn't talk about showing skin. How much, where, and where not? Advice from a mother of the bride: It's a good rule of thumb to show only one area of skin. Either show your shoulders or arms or chest or back. Or a covered up top with exposed leg (depends on wedding formality). Not more than one (maybe two) areas of skin, or you'll take away the bride's spot light. Also, wear comfortable shoes you can dance in. I've seen girls get barefoot on the dance floor, then someone drops their champagne glass, and you can guess what happens next...... Unless you're on a beach or grassy lawn, keep your shoes on. Also be respectful of religious decorum. If the ceremony is in a place of worship, bring a wrap for any exposed shoulders, arms or back.
Thanks for the tips.I'm attending a formal wedding next May and I am wondering about a golden (simple and not too bright) dress by the knee, no sleeves ... or would it be nice by the ankle ... Do tou think it would fit for the church and party too? Please, give me your opinion. Thanks❤
I would add, depending on the venue, consider chunkier heels/flats- its never a good look sinking into the turf even if your shoes are gorgeous
Good point! Although you can get those clear heel caps for the grass which work well.
It’s also not classy taking off your shoes at a wedding, so choose comfortable shoes to survive the day!
Naturalizer does some great (and comfy) dressy wedges.

Not to mention they don't suit everyone. Some people need brighter colors because they compliment their skintone better than muted ones.
Absolutely agree!
Depending on the cultural background of the wedding parties, S and E Asians would probably prefer brighter colours. Black may be frowned upon.

I am a witness at my brothers wedding in May and bloody hell trying to find something is hard. I just hate most of these type of event dresses. 😷 And I also don´t like spending money on clothing I´ll likely wear once, but I also don´t like to spend money on bad fabrics..
I a agree with you jump suit it’s a No go….
Prints make me feel elderly, too girly, and awkward. I love edgy. I think others looks beautiful in prints.
Such a good video
Can you style silver shoes several ways, please.
Thanks for the tips.I'm attending a formal wedding next May and I am wondering about a golden (simple and not too bright) dress by the knee, no sleeves ... or would it be nice by the ankle ... Do tou think it would fit for the church and party too? Please, give me your opinion. Thanks❤
Wear a blazer or jacket over the top if you’re worried about needing to be modest for the church but then take it off for the after party
Must be cold where she is in the summer . No one is wearing a jacket blazer full on coat in summer in most of the US
Too floaty should be spelled with double o, I believe. “TOO”
Haha oooops that’s my biggest bug bear as well 🤣 but it’s too late to change it! So annoying 😂

Perfect!
God advise,your blouse a beautiful
Instead of renting a dress (and a matching coat) I would buy one second hand and sell it after wedding season.
