So glad you're back doing videos and I am especially psyched about your latest project. For the past 3 years, I have owned an `03 E53 4.4 and many, many of your videos have helped me. From doing an oil change to replacing the water pump (twice), learning the joys of salvage yards and a love of Harbor Freight - your videos have been there with me. THANK YOU!! Outside of that, I also replaced the timing chain and guides (many lessons learned there), rebuilt the VANOS with the Besian Systems kit, replaced both air struts, radiator, CCV, valley pan, accumulator gaskets and manifold gaskets. This weekend, I am replacing both VANOS solenoids. Let me know if I can do anything for you and I am excited for your journey. Cheers!
This is an excellent video, I really appreciate the detailed diagnosis steps that is 100% gold -- maybe even one of the best of these types of videos I've ever seen. I think most mechanic's have a lot more trial and error to diagnosis a problem than they ever let on which trying to learn at my laptop can be pretty frustrating when you dead end after trying a few things from 10 different youtube videos. Seeing your process end to end really has me feeling a lot better about knowing what to do next to get the X5 in my driveway on the road again. Thanks for making this, looking forward to the rest of this series.
Great training again! I think I'll start a no/low fuel pressure test right at the pump cover with power, ground and a hose in a container from no on. Good video quality and troubleshooting explanations.
Very good troubleshooting example. Nice to see you with new project! This reminded me how I did mine and changed the fuel pump on my E39 on a winter 0°C parking lot! These pumps are known for problems and it is always wise to install a new one when you are there. Be extra careful with the plastic pump housing, you don't want to break something while getting it in/out! Watch out if having a "cigarette time out" too haha.
Just found your channel and I have to say you are the F’ing man! You are so thorough it’s insane. It’s so hard to find people with your level of understanding. Most shops just toss parts at your car and hav no real understanding of how to properly troubleshoot anything. My BMW is giving me hell. Well one of mine! New subscribers for sure.
Nice to see you back on the tube Jason. Will be tuning in even though I don't have an E53. You make a valuable contribution to automotive mainenance generally.
Awesome video, watched it in preparation for changing out my fuel filter tomorrow. Appreciated the way you took us through the step, but also shortened things where needed. 👍
Great video's! Working on my 2006 BMW X5 4.4l. Was having some battery-parasite issues, replaced battery and now she only cranks. Never an issue before. Replaced the fuel pump fuses...no luck. Replacing the fuel pump relay tomorrow. If that doesn't work it's onto the fuel pump. Wondering if the battery parasite issues could have caused an issue with the fuel pump (parasite issue was caused by the rear suspension pump that would turn on/off randomly and draw power...next project). Thank you.
Absolute legend. SOOO glad you’re doing one of these - thought the e90 series would be way more popular on your poll! I’ve got a 4.8 and have had to rebuild pretty much all of the suspension - RUSTY RUSTY RUSTY! Blow torches and very big hammers...! Really looking forward to the timing guide video. If you could do the alternator bracket seal then that’d be pretty awesome too! And a panoramic sunroof track repair (replacing the cables and lifters in the track - not just the quick fix to permanently close the rear vent....). I think the air suspension valve blocks can leak from their o rings as they age - causing suspension to drop, but am not entirely sure where it is.... possibly under a cover beneath the driver (on the right for a uk car....). Single corner likely to be an air bag on your car as you say. If it’s completely floored I’ve found I have to use inpa or dis to raise the car as it won’t work by just clearing any fault codes. So chuffed you’re back and working on another car I have to deal with! As mentioned, have done LOADS of work on our e53 - but there’s always more to do on these (they are worth it though - as they’re so bloody good when everything works) - so looking forward to watching you work again!
Ur awesome man. Bought a complete shit box of a e46 hasn’t ran in 4 years and got it to crank and turn over with your help and a little ether. Only issue now is can’t get fuel pump to turn on. Currently in the process of the next steps, looking forward to more content!!
Excellent video. I have the exact same problem and followed your steps. Still not sorted though, but I've ruled out the fuel pump (it pumps strongly in to a container), battery, wiring harness, fuses. I am getting power to the pump on cranking so I've ruled out the relays. Still stuck, but your video helped me rule some stuff out...
This has just answered a puzzle that I had over Christmas with my E46. No start and no pressure at the rail. Put a new pump in and sorted the problem out. But then, out of curiosity, I put 12V across the old one and the pump ran. Huh? I didn't do your testing of the pump. But it's interesting to know that a pump can run but not pump fuel.
Wow, thanks for this. I was able to properly diagnose my X5 by referring to this very detailed video. I am no confident that my problem is the fuel pump wand ill now order the part. Thanks again!
I know this is an older video, but for any newbies watching this, at 6:45 Kid said the Brown wire was positive. I know he knows better, as Solid Brown wires on BMW's are always Ground Edit: which he corrects a few minutes later
On my E53 3.0 the fuel pump actually ran but pressure was not enough, had me going for a while until i put a fuel pressure gauge on schrader valve and found pressure wasn’t sufficient. Replaced pump fired right up. Also even though you hadbit on jumper pack that should have worked.. interesting
First off, I have really appreciated your video’s/tutorials. You give an enormous amount of detail and laugh at one’ self. Question: My 2005 E46 M3, shutdown on me yesterday, requiring a tow home. As I waited the tow, I figured it was “ƒuel related” and realizing that she’s got 151,000, I can’t get too mad that she need a pump. In your white board explanation of the circuitry, if my car would run for a few minutes I, then blow another, then another. I’m concluding that the pump is tripping the #53/25 amp. Should I😮 head to the DME box also? Thanks in advance.
2004 BMW 325ci. I have 4.94 volts at the end of the harness. Of course I can't get the screw out of the back passengers side panel to check the last relay.
quite a job you did....From Chile I´ve been watching your videos, following step by step....i got a bmw 530i 2004, and did all my work trhough your videos as a begginer, i`m at the point where checking my car i will let you know later how did go. the issue was bad starter and had to open the manyfold and found where the starter was...
??? When you initially found voltage at the white wire (brown is usually ground on German cars) that proved that everything about the relay was working.
Cool video I like those style clamps. As an observation you need to leave at least 1.5 to 2mm between the ears when using Oetiker style clamps . Essentially you over tighten them otherwise. Cheers
I have a question on a 5:30 I 2005 when I take the covers off underneath the oil seems like it is dripping Non-Stop from and back by the bell housing is there that much oil that goes into that engine that that oil would leak out of the back like that
wouldnt a fuel pressure gauge on rail eliminate all of the chasing ground short and relay test? if 12v while cranking and 45psi at rail holding with key off (in my case) starts with ether but not on its own
My E46 did this I just parked it was getting ready to shut it off and it shut off itself just like I turned the key off took me a while to figure out what it was she turned the key on here the fuel pump but it wasn't no fuel pressure at the rail turns out that the fuel line from the pump itself in the tank to the outlet on top of the tank had split and busted.
I have a E46 381i and this car had 2 fuel tanks and the main tank that has the fuel pump in keeps running dry and the car dies. The other side of the tank does not pump the fuel back to the mail side... Yet the fuel level sensor is fine as it does show that I have fuel in the tank. Help please
This is the best car fix video I have ever seen. I watch many of them because I have to work on my own cars. My teenage boy ran out of gas in his 03 x5, I have seen several videos of people saying they ran out of gas but the gage read quarter. I wasn't there, I don't about that but I'm wondering if I can just unstick the float because the car still runs fine but he just has to use his trip meter for a gase age. Do you know if it's the float and is the sending unit the same thing as the fuel pump? Thank you so much.
Great video as usual. Would you consider getting a diesel e46 to work on? They’re very common in the UK and I for one would definitely appreciate your insight there. M47 engine would be ideal! I’ve had a non-starting 320d e46 sat in my garage for months now. I changed the rocker cover gasket and since then has refused to start, seems like a lack of fuel pressure. Tried a few things and believe the low pressure fuel pump is working fine but not sure about the high pressure pump. Regardless, thanks for the videos and keep them coming.
Can't wait to learn about a new chassis through your work. By the way, do you have an updated list of tools you'd recommend or use yourself? I've followed your sound advice for the majority of all the tools I've bought since I started working on cars and it has saved me from countless headaches. Great to see an upload from you again.
Yes that’s true, because the fuel pump can draw up to 9 amps I believe and my test light can only do 250mA. I’ve been meaning to make some home made test lights out of headlight bulbs
I had a similar problem, but for me the fuel pump was fine, but the white(positive) cable does not have signal, and I was in the middle of BAJA, without cel signal, so I just get a piece of cable and connect to the white pumps( +)wire and the other end connected to a fuse on the rear fuse compartment. problem solved I made it to San Diego after 8 hours, without turning engine off
So glad you're back! Can't wait to see this series! You've taught me everything I know about my e46
Me too man... I ve learned so much with him!

Yes, my X5 at136 k 4.4 rattles sometimes. Less now after new chain tensioner installed but maybe needs rails soon. Thanks Eduard
The best BMW repair guy is back with the vids!!!!!

Nice to see ya back KID!
Cool Cali Blue Too. .
Good to hear you're going to work on the engine. I had heard that they weren't a very reliable engine.Good to see how it can be made reliable again.
Just found your channel and I have to say you are the F’ing man! You are so thorough it’s insane. It’s so hard to find people with your level of understanding. Cant wait for you to shoot a timing guide diy on this engine.
Good afternoon family. Again, thank you very much for the valuable information and your valuable time 🙏👍👍
Helpful troubleshooting for any car. Thank you sir.
It really is great to see you back on youtube, cheers buddy from across the pond :)
Nice to see you back on the tube Jason. Will be tuning in even though I don't have an E53. You make a valuable contribution to automotive mainenance generally.
Great detail explanation of all possible issues that kept the car from running. Definitely best video on you tube. Thank you
I really like your honesty about your try and errors. Keep it up :)
So good to see you back 50s Kid!
Awesome video, watched it in preparation for changing out my fuel filter tomorrow. Appreciated the way you took us through the step, but also shortened things where needed. 👍
2001 BMW X5 same damn problem!
Funny thing we ran into this video after the fact.
This was extremely informative. Thanks!
This is great. Love your thought processes and conclusions. We've all been there.
The thing that scared me most was you pressure washing the engine! Idk why but I always thought that would be a bad idea… lesson learned!
Nice to see you doing video again. Of all bnw tutorials yours explain into details the best.
Love ur videos! New 2002 e46 owner…I love the car and just had my first fuel pump issue. This video taught me all I needed to know. Thanks!!
He's BACK.....
Thanks 50!!!
I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that!!
Hello Jason, good to see you again.
I am very happy that you have decided to make videos again
Greetings from Austria
Nice to see you back making videos again. So many have been helpful.
I clicked the like button before the video started!
Really good explaining the way you dianose the problems ....
Glàd to see you back, my E46 330ci runs like a dream because of your videos 👍
After so much time and no thumbdown
You are the Man with good quality videos

Wild guess. Perhaps the impeller had separated from the motor.
Great job. Love the E53, even tho we have an E46 sedan. Good luck with it

Great to see the video back again! Literally lost count of the repairs I need to credit you for!

Thank you buddy you’ve awesome trew out my journey !!!! Nothing but Love from Las Vegas
so glad to see you
I like that the outcome is accurate even though the plug was in that new fuel line, lol
Whoa .... great video Thank you . I fixed my old. X5 and it is running good

Sweet, Love you Channel, I'll start watch all the videos ( you helped alot with my E46 330ci , thank you )
Welcome back Jason. We missed you.
You're back! That's great. The show can go on 😉
Awesome 👏 been anticipating your upload Jason ! Thanks for the new video .. interesting fuel pump issue .
It is so cool you're back with your videos!
Awesome thanks for the help, Keep up the great work.

It's not an e46 but hey we'll take it!!! one question though, why the heck do you have a beaker?? lol

Excelente los mismos síntomas tiene mi bmw x5 e53 2004, este fin de semana haré esas pruebas, para saber si realmente la bomba esta mala...
Nicely done. Like a pro.
About time you're back!!!
More content = more gooder!!!
Glad your back, love the videos.
Cool video I like those style clamps. As an observation you need to leave at least 1.5 to 2mm between the ears when using Oetiker style clamps . Essentially you over tighten them otherwise. Cheers
I know everyone knows but i just wanted to mention that a brown cable especially on german cars is ground 99% of the time. 😇
Thanks - I did not know that. Any idea if the same applies to other German or European brands? I also have a Porsche and a SaaB
Yep thats the Germans for ya
I have 3 bimmers and worked on all of them. Just changed a starter on my 2010 535i and it was kind of a challenge
Following this build/restoration
I have a question on a 5:30 I 2005 when I take the covers off underneath the oil seems like it is dripping Non-Stop from and back by the bell housing is there that much oil that goes into that engine that that oil would leak out of the back like that
I have a similar issue on my e83 x3 m54b25. Did you find out what it was?
Great timing.
Another quality video. BRAVO
The king returns
wouldnt a fuel pressure gauge on rail eliminate all of the chasing ground short and relay test? if 12v while cranking and 45psi at rail holding with key off (in my case) starts with ether but not on its own
Yes!
so happy to see another new video from you!
That was excellent -- Thanks! 👍🏾
Great job as always! What fuel pump did you go with?
Awesome video! I learn so much watching your videos!
Solid car the E53, love it ! 😀

Great info👍🏻
Once we replace new fuel pump and sender do we have to reset anything?
He's back babyyyyyy
Very useful video bro. Thx
Glad to see you back man, 👍👍👍
O men nice to see you again✌✌✌✌

My question is what if what is the SBSR module and what did stop the car
Do you know where the Fuel Pump Relay is for the e53 3.0i gasonine x5? is it the same location under the glovebox
I learned from one guy a test light isn't always a good test. He used a 12 volt head light ..it draws more amps
Yes that’s true, because the fuel pump can draw up to 9 amps I believe and my test light can only do 250mA. I’ve been meaning to make some home made test lights out of headlight bulbs
Classic!
Pressure washing the engine? Hope, you didn't kill any electronics again 😅
No fuel pumping after you hear it run I would say pump or filter pick up tube broken ??
I had a similar problem, but for me the fuel pump was fine, but the white(positive) cable does not have signal, and I was in the middle of BAJA, without cel signal, so I just get a piece of cable and connect to the white pumps( +)wire and the other end connected to a fuse on the rear fuse compartment. problem solved I made it to San Diego after 8 hours, without turning engine off
any clues?
new pump, new relay, new fuel filter, new ignition switch, new thermostat >(with sensor
do you know where the fuel pump control module is ?
