- Aloha, I am Shawn Casco and welcome to my channel. This video features Ruby my Severe Macaw. I rescued Ruby from craigslist out in Murrieta, CA. I drove out to get her and drove right back. She is 20 years old this spring 2021. We will discuss Ruby and some history and info on the Severe Macaw. There's so little out there on what this species is like and needs. I'm trying to find out more as I'm thinking about this bird to join my family
I have one, male got him at four months old in 2000. Ara severa severa is the nominate species, there is a sub-species: Lafresnayes Macaw (Ara severus castaneifrons - Lafresnaye, 1847)
What a wonderfully beautiful bird. I will be taking one in from a couple that doesn't have the time to really invest in the bird. I am looking forward to it. Yours is looking beautiful, I can tell you treat it well and feed it well.

I have a severe male thats been with me since 4 months old (hatched aug 1999). And still going strong.
I have a female severe who was hatched in 2000. She is also healthy and vibrant. No signs of slowing down.
I also own a Blue and gold, Hyacinth, handful of sun conures and an aviary of green cheek conures, and an aviary full of different types and species of sparrow, finches and Canaries.
I'm really interested in learning about this species and getting a feel for what this gorgeous macaw is like to live with, and their general personality/needs. Do you have videos I can learn from. There's so little out there to help me understand this species to see if they'd be a good fit.

Severe is latin..has nothing to do with attitude..
There name actually is Ara Severa Severa, there's a sub-species that's slightly bigger : Ara Severa Castineferons. Breeding season males (no experience with severe hens), they become short tempered and territorial.
In my years of severe company I've searched and found a lot of information on macaws in general, very little on minis and early none except the most basic (they are from x, are y size and found in the wild from b-d and live e-h years.. )
Yes, Severe is latin for Severa which is the Feminine singular for Severus. From the research I was able to find Ara is the genus of the Psittacidae family. Severus is the species name that was given to them from the Explorer and researcher Linnaeus in 1758. They speculate he may have given the species their name because of their attitudes compared to other species and genus within the family. Yes, there are subspecies as well.
