      Hi, I refit the carpet gripper strip to the floor at the cut edge of the carpet (cutting back the underlay a bit further to allow for it). I try to avoid ever placing fitted furniture directly onto carpet as a little bit of settlement over time would lead to caulked wall scribe joints moving and cracking. Glad you like the content!

      Thanks! Smaller spaceplugs are a common request but Cliff the inventor is reluctant to sink another few tens of thousands into a new mould at this stage! What you saw there is one side of a spaceplug onlt (the femal part), which just happened to fit right on it's own! Why do you use ply for carcasses rather than MDF? I've just retired and am going to build Alcove Units (which I should have done 30 years ago!) Love your videos. Will drop you a Tenner!

    • @Alastair_Freebird

      Thank you! It went like this: we discovered most of our customers would rather pay a little less than have the internals painted. We used brown mdf at first rather than MR (green) but weren’t happy with the screw holding strength for the hinges. We settled on birch ply for screw holding but also it looks and smells better! And is more rigid for the mid shelf. I would like to start finishing the internals in a clear finish as standard but the profit margin just won’t allow it at the sort of price point we are currently able to sell these at.

    Hi Alistair, I was wondering how you determine whether you will use a wooden plinth or black adjustable feet? Much appreciated

    • @Alastair_Freebird
      @Alastair_Freebird  4 роки тому +4

      Rhett Baker I often get asked this and tbh it’s not always rational but generally if it’s a single standalone unit, or a couple which I can easily prefix together, I use black feet. If it’s a long run of heavy wardrobes (which are also deeper than most alcove cupboards) then I use the ladder plinth to create a continuous level base which I can skate them into position on. But there are pros and cons to each method and at least the black feet allow for adjustment after the units are in position.

  • @Reef_Club_
    @Reef_Club_ 3 роки тому

    @Alistair - superbly informative videos - thanks for sharing all this knowledge. I was just wondering, what’s the reason for the double plinth behind the skirting board? If I’ve understood correctly, I think you said you put one plinth strip in front of the black feet, then another to line up with the vertical edge scribe piece, then plant the skirting on. Could you bring the black feet forward and do away with the first plinth? Minor detail I know, just really interested in your system. Thanks.

    • @Alastair_Freebird
      @Alastair_Freebird  3 роки тому

      It’s a good question. The background to this is that we settled on one standardised method of making alcove units, which in its basic form we call the ‘modern’ style. In that basic variation the first plinth is all there is and it has a simple look with the side cover strips coming down to the ground and the plinth set back in between them, with either simple slab or shaker style doors. The ‘Classic’ style as seen here is built in exactly the same way PLUS some add ons - a routed profile on the countertop; ogee mitred moulding added to the shaker door; and the skirting (with same standard routed profile as the countertop). To avoid confusion in the workshop we decided to always make the plinth the same way, we just need to add that sort of spacer plinth to bring everything flush to receive the skirting. Perhaps we have been too wedded to standardising, which dates back to my first apprentice who I felt worked better when he didn’t have to think too much but just do things the same each time!! But also when I have tried bringing the plinth forward it bothers me that a hairline gap can be created between back edge of plinth (set forward) and bottom edge of carcase, since we like to slightly roundover all arris edges. So I just decided not to do that!

    Nice to see you add the grill at the top of the unit but i am certain that the air vent has to be direct to room. Pretty certain it does not conform to heatas regs. Does the halfe grill have the same free air area as the wall grill?

    • @Alastair_Freebird
      @Alastair_Freebird  4 роки тому

      Well, as it happens I was at another job soon after where an inspector (perhaps from Heatas?) was checking a new wood burning stove installation. I asked him about it and he didn’t seem to think it was a problem. Yes the grille had sufficient open surface area for the stove (the wall vent size was actually over specified by about 2 times). The tricky thing is the risk of the customer filling the cupboard in such a way that airflow is reduced. I take care to emphasise the customer’s responsibility in this regard.

    • @D_pawson
      @D_pawson 4 роки тому

      Freebird Interiors . 👍 Watch out if you come across gas stoves like that. Gas industry is more tightly regulated it would be capped off if it was a gas stove. Just something to keep in back of your mind. 👍 neat install anyway and keep up the good work

      Would it be acceptable if a duct was built between the wall vent and the vent in the top of the unit so there was a "free" air route?
