  • Here I share 10 things that luxury watch dealers are unlikely to share. Luckily, things are changing quickly in the watch industry and dealers are becoming more transparent. Watch collectors spend time on social media and do their homework now more than ever. While there may be some watch dealers that still use some of these tactics, there is less every day. I cover things that perhaps you have not heard of if you are a watch collector, or even as a seasoned collector of Patek, Rolex, AP, and others.

Another thing an AD usually won’t tell you is if a particular watch model is no longer being produced, or if a new model will be replacing a previous model in the near future.

Appreciate the video. I’m looking at Rolex’s in my area constantly and prices are still way too high with resellers. I could do a deal today, but I am not going to pay thousands of dollars over retail knowing 2024 is going to be a brutal year. The lag effect is almost over and people will be looking to dump watches left and right when their cash flow gets squeezed and interest rate are just too high. Reseller overhead is not the buyers problem. If they want to move watches prices will have to come down a lot farther. If you really want a know what your watch is worth call a reseller for shits&giggles and see what they will pay in cash for your watch. No consignment just a cash payout. You’ll be surprised at how little it’s worth. The market is way over hyped until you need cash fast. That day is just around the corner.

Thanks for your insights. They're really appreciated. I'm not surprised that people will track days in inventory on a site, but it's impressive they go to those lengths. One thing I wondered about is why would a dealer not want to reveal which number of a limited edition release they have? For example, number 63 out of 200. Not revealing a Rolex serial number and such make sense.

The watch industry for the longest time, are like the used car busy actually. Condition, service, miles, paint, engine issues all translate to watches, there should be stds for all higher priced items like these. I have never seen a reseller, that states or lists, all the relevant information Service history, Full Links, Full set (Outer Box, Box, Tags and Papers > Usually Box n Pprs or Full Set listed when it's not), pictures of any damage vs generic front side n back, time graph result (cuz they put it on one themselves to bargin the price). Some of these pieces are 10's of thousands, would u buy from a used car salesman, many do. To each their own, many have learned the hard way.

Authentication. How do I know a watch is authentic and not a fake? Do all dealers guarantee this?

John, I enjoyed your candid assessment assessment about buying from online dealers. Since you opened the door, where does Delray Watch source it's watches? What type of evaluation does DRW do before offering the watch to collectors?

    Good ins as always.
I think asking for a best price - of a dealer, private seller, sure - is tacky and no one should expect an answer. Feel free to say ‘I’ll buy it today for $xxxx.’

I’m not sure what experience people are referring too… Delray rocks and publishes very aggressive pricing but there is no meaningful experience when you list a product, I send money and you ship me the watch…. Are you sending supermodels to give me a massage and serving cocktails? “Experience” is a meaningless phrase in this industry…. If I can afford a boutique watch then I can probably afford a cocktail or 2 on my own;)

Thanks good video. How can you ensure you're not buying a 'stolen' watch when you buy from an online dealer (not saying the dealer stole it, but they may have bought it from someone, or somewhere down the line, where it was stolen)?
