  • Wes and Dok have a good old fashioned rant about what good there is to talk about in comics. wes explains why his frustrations with American comics are at an all-time high. Why he finds it difficult to hype even the best written comics from DC and Marvel. Many viewers are upset with Dok's negative ways. Wes calls him out and asks Dok if he's going to lighten up moving forward. A good old fashioned rant about what good there is to talk about in American comics.

Ya, I agree. The cancel Dok trend that lurks in the comments from time to time is annoying. With that said, Dok needs to be checked when he is on a panel sometimes. I don’t want him to leave tho. Same with Josh. He has a great sense of humor and has a way different perspective from me. I often hate his takes and “insider secrets” on the MCU, but that is no reason to dump him. I actually try to defend Josh’s staying on the panel even when his MCU takes and defense of Feige is absolutely abysmal. Dok and Josh are both good dudes.

Best is to let it all burn. The beatings will continue till morale improves. The problem is there are more than one writer and there are the companies that help and enable these writers and artists who are toxic towards fans. I for one switched to manga, i refuse to give a cent to the western comics industry and for all i care Marvel, DC, IDW, image can all get driven into the ground. I’m going to be honest; outside a handful of titles, Moon Knight, World’s finest and Rogue Sun, I find it hard to get excited about modern comics. Case in point outside Rogue Sun, I usually just read the trades or a bunch of issues back to back. Contrast this to manga like Kaiju No 8 or One Piece. I will eagerly read each and every chapter that comes our weekly. The storytelling there is sharper and the mangaka clearly care about their craft. The big two if they aren’t talking down to their customers, it’s just endless reboots, events and that stuff. And I can’t take it. It’s why I prefer reading back issues, pretending they are their own thing.

Simon "Transformers Scribe Extraordinaire" Furman is the writer, and the fantastic Hector Trunnec is on art. This initial run is only a 5 issue mini, but I'm really hoping it succeeds into a regular ongoing.
Astrobots also has a toy line that's actually been out for about 4 or so years now. They're pricey, but they're very, very cool.

Ok I have to say this.... American Comic books isnt the problem... MARVEL AND DC ARE. Dynamite, Dark Horse, and Image are delivering classics but because people constantly complaining about Marvel and DC and creates the narrative that comic books as a whole is doing bad or they suck. Scorched doesnt suck, Vampirella doesnt suck, Saga is dope, but no lets based their success off of what DC AND MARVEL non writing asses are doing.
It upsets me because it makes them guilty by association. So if american comics is failing we as a fanbase helped with it or why else companies like Valiant are failing

I’ve walked away from comics twice: Ron Marz’s destroying of Hal Jordan and Dan Slott’s Superior Spider-man. In both cases, I fell into the trap of follow the character. It became like visiting a friend who was in the hospital because he was addicted to jumping off buildings.
What got me back is following creators instead. Even ones that I’d given up on. I hated Mark Millar’s Marvel books and avoided some great Indy stuff from him as a result. Dumb mistake. Word of mouth got me to try Magic Order, Nemesis and king of Spies and I have not been disappointed. Now, I follow Millar, Waid, Peter David, Levitz, Scottie Young, Adams, Maxwell Prince and some Indy stuff that friends recommend. I’m a much happier person.

Doctor Strange + Alex Ross covers. Yes please. However, interior art is mid level and Jed McKay doesn’t write Doctor Strange or Clea like their personalities are. Clea has become this angry, aggressive girlboss. She was a deeply cerebral character, not an action hero who shoots first and asks questions later. Clea was the person who basically doomed herself for her lifespan to help Doc Strange when he stumbled into her realm bc she believed he was in the right rather than the people who were in charge of her realm. Where’d that lady go? Oh yea…that is the patriarchy so of course Marvel will dump the nuance for ham-fisted feminism.

This is why the manga industry is beating out a lot of the American comic book industry.
As you guys said they want good storytelling, if you guys remember the Tom King Batman issues where King had tried to marry off Catwoman to him but the editor-in-chief said no we're not going to marry off Batman it wouldn't translate well but the audience. Then there's the Superman revealing his identity for the third time did that go anywhere no and that was under Brian Michael Bendis has run.
As far as the Spider-Man issues are concern I really just don't care about that, as I stated before, that I prefer Spider-Man to be with black cat which is what they kind of did during the miniseries Symbiote Spider-Man and even during the Animated Series back in the 90's.

And he ran with it. He's a just... he's a talent and a smart boy. Grant is more than a little weird. I read Seaman and some of his Doom Patrol and it's almost incomprehensible. Or I'm stupid. Mark is much more accessible. He's more grounded. And personally, I love Dock. I recently rewatched Grumpy Old Men, and Jack Lemmon is a bit more upbeat, while Matthau is more cranky. And it completely works. Dock is right; most comics stink right now. But there are a lot of back issues out there.

A significant portion of stuff from places like Image, Boom! and other smaller publishers are great. DC and Marvel publish recognizable characters, but the products are largely terrible and redundant. It's actually a Golden Age of Comics right now, but DC and Marvel are heading towards a much-deserved irrelevancy.
I have no interest in modern DC/Marvel, so I don't read or talk about them. Enjoy the classic back issues and the modern quality books from publishers that can't rely on the foundation set by talent long past. Ignore the rest.

Besides the insane shipping prices the crowed funded campaigns to my opinion also rely to heavy on (over priced) variant covers, they are a pain to collect if you werent there from the get go. Aaron if you ever read this, I really wished you guys would release Miss Meow TPB'S instead of reprints hehehe 😬😁😋😉. Also platforms that only use CC"s arent helpful either for a lot of people outside of the US. I hope that the succesful crowed funded comics expand soon by looking for printing & distribution partners on other continents. To my opinion that time has come, and Im aware not every artist can do that but the big ones should be able to do it.

After the hype dies down, it’ll be his most dedicated fans, many of whom live in a niche cultural vacuum bc they dare not support anything mainstream, supporting him. I think Eric is happy to do that, and I wish him the best, but he won’t be toppling the elephant in the room-manga. He’ll ring DC and Marvel’s bells every few months when he releases a new issue. But he has to make a digital version and/or a cheaper physical copy if he ever wants to create that “parallel economy.”

The fact is Spidey and Batman books sells yet don't matter how badly your stories are. This needs to change with new indies books from Image,Dynamite and Boom outselling the big 2 main books. I haven't checked out on them but I have turned down the noise because it makes no sense to have all these different factions and having to choose a side or group. I don't care about any litmus test on who is truly 'conservative' or 'based' enough. It was never written that everyone who is tired of the big two have to get along. Just make good comics.

Yeah I just don’t see it. I’ve got plenty to read right now and plenty more to be excited about. Chip Zdarsky just came out with Batman’s 900th issue which reads like a love letter to the history of the character. Jed MacKay is still going strong on Moon Knight, with a new Avengers series around the corner (I wasn’t sure how to cleverly insert it but his Doctor Strange has also been good). PKJ hasn’t skipped a beat on Action Comics and now he’s penning a new Hulk series that’s setting itself up to be the spiritual successor to the Immortal Hulk. All this without even mentioning the stuff that Joshua Williamson, Mark Waid, Al Ewing, and Ram V have been working on. Even still there’s also stuff on the indie scene with something for everyone. Personally, I’ve been really enjoying the Barbaric series, Gunslinger Spawn, and Radiant Black. So like I said I just don’t see.
