I can’t believe Mater National was a GBA game. That’s one of the most impressive feats I’ve ever seen, and it was a licensed game. I wish I would’ve had it as a kid.
Also at the time, Nintendo was committed to a “three-pillar” business model, committing to support GBA, DS, and GameCube/Wii. Unlike how we see it now, they didn’t market the DS as a necessarily “successor” to the GBA, but an upgraded alternative. Obviously, this was not how their business model ended, because they doubled down on DS and retired the GameBoy line.
Given the Hardware limitations of the GBA - I'd say Maternational should get a 6/10, it might be easy but it handles somewhat decently for a racing game not to mention it has a decent FOV / perspective.
While the models in Mater-National are very well made, McQueen's face just looks terrifying. Also, did you know that there is a DS version of Race-O-Rama? I genuinely had no idea it even existed
@@KLEJGaming A Video about the Cars DS games would be nice because Maternational is my first played DS game ever and it's also my favorite version of Maternational tbh.
Glad to finally see somebody else talking about this game again. Did you know you can unlock a secret track in the first cars GBA game by using a cheat code? At the start screen, enter LEFT, LEFT, RIGHT, RIGHT, B, B, A and you will be able to select Radiator Cap Secret Circuit once you continue. Also if anybody is interested in speedrunning these games feel free to reach out because they are surprisingly satisfying to get good at and sadly there are barely any people who have tried to speedrun these games.
This is all quite interesting! My main takeaway from both of these games is that, Cars on DS in contrast was just a mini game collection and had barely any actual racing in it. The races themselves were just 4 really simple and similar tracks and it felt pretty dry tbh. Both of these games you featured actually had racing in it. It’s pretty funny to me that these 2 games are more like Cars than the DS game which I feel should have been better. Surprised me they released these 2 games on GBA and not DS! Really good video my man 🙂
Man this brings me waaaaaaay back when I had Maternational. We couldn’t afford a lot of DS games & I got a copy of this for my DS along with G&W Gallery 4. Thanks so much for bringing back some fond memories of playing this, I’m gon go hunt for a cartridge of this now!
Isometric Racing games aren't for everyone, but as someone who likes them, Cars 1 on the GBA had one big issue: Screen Crunch. The camera is too zoomed in that it's makes cornering a nightmare. You have a split second to look at the directions the game gives you before trying to avoid crashing into a wall. Mater-National Championship however, is a decent game. Too easy, but knowing the devs' track record on racing games, it is impressive and shows how much the GBA can pull off a chase cam pseudo 3D racer. This and V-Rally 3 are great examples of this, and it's even more impressive when you look at some of those games that are on the GB/GBC. Having 3D models in a 2D background works pretty well in these games.
I recommend playing race o rama, the handling is great and the tracks and models are pretty nice for the time and console, the difficulty can be there if you choose the harder difficulty, its a fun time and i loved playing it a long time ago
Good video! I think we share exactly the same feelings about top down racers, haha. Also, I appreciated the clips of peak British tv. Your usage of the tenth doctor is both funny and heart rending at the same time 😅
A lot of kids had parents that wouldn't buy them new systems frequently and a lot of the parents weren't gamers themselves so some probably bought the GBA even after the DS was out not knowing any better. That's why the GBA kept getting games until 2008, thats also why the PS2 was even still getting games in the early 2010's.
I remember buying the first GBA Cars game with my Christmas money when I was like 6 years old since my brother rented the Xbox 360 game and I thought it looked fun, and at the time I didn't really understand the concept of different hardware and limitations so when I brought it home I was so angry and confused that it wasn't like the Xbox 360 game and was instead some weird top-down racer lol. Didn't really end up playing it much but I did get Maternational on GBA as well and remember liking it as a kid (and it being technically impressive as a GBA game) but I imagine going back to it now it wouldn't hold up very well.
I remember when moving in to our new house as a kid finding a gba sp, my dad went to our local game store and got an ac adapter, I played the Dora (found with the console) and Spongebob movie game a lot until asking for another. I assumed I'd get something like Pokemon but my dad came home with the cars game, I played it for so long, had to get him to beat the first level for me and never beat any other lol, I miss him a lot, he must have remembered how much I loved watching the movie, this is giving me some motivation to play it again, and almost definitely beat it this time haha.
I decided to emulate the GBA version of Mater-National recently because I remembered playing the first one as a kid and somewhat liking it. It took me two minutes to realize that it was built on the bones of a better game. Also, the motion sickness.
Maybe make the window small, GBA games were not meant to be played on big screens and in a lot of fast paced games it really shows. I heard of some people having the same issue when Mario Kart Super Circuit was ported to Wii U.
Mater-National looks like it is essentially a reskin of Monster Truck Madness. I've always called MTM my favorite GBA racing game, largely because the NPC trucks were very competitive and the actual racing was very good. It's interesting that that obviously didn't carry over.
The big thing about MNCGBA nobody seems to talk about is that there's absolutely no saving... it uses passwords like Metroid, Kid Icarus or the millions of other shovelwares on the GBA.
Ah yes the dreaded password system - I'm not sure why I didn't talk about it
