Not gonna lie, Mater National’s GBA port had groundbreaking graphics for the GBA.
Puts me in mind of Starfox on the SNES
The GBA managed to have some pretty sweet looking games despite its very, very limited hardware
They made me think of Stunt Race FX on the SNES

its a command that moves everything into a black hole, if it makes sense
basically destroy files or move them to "nowhere"
Man, seeing that isometric angle was so nostalgic, though i never found out about the mini map, and yet somehow I still beat the game, at the ripe young age of like 6, don't ask me how, I musta got my sister to beat it, which was the same with Cars on the DS, from what I remember ( and yes i still have the game, but I refuse to hunt for it) its mostly a collection of mini games, with the piston cup being the only race in the game, but what was cool is that you'd actually get tyre wear and you'd need to pit, and there'd be this neat little mini game, where you replace Lightnings tyres, which I always just hamfisted my way through by tapping the screen. Definitely worth a check though.

I remember playing the original Cars game on the PS2 and PC and asking my parents for the GBA version, expecting it to be similar. I was in for a bit of a shock when I first booted it up lol

minimme I’m old enough to remember when isometric racing games were almost all we had and therefor old enough to remember how glad we were when they were replaced with sudo-3D and then proper 3D games.

In the first GBA Cars game, you CAN actually play as other characters, though only on levels you've already beaten. You can play as Lightning McQueen, Doc Hudson, The King or Chick Hicks (who is crazy fast, IIRC).

I remember when I was 5 or so I used to play a cars game on the V.Smile of all things called "Cars, rev it up in radiator springs". It was an educational game for preschoolers, but it is a cars game, possibly the most obscure cars game there is

Cars for the GBA was one of the first games I got as a kid that was my own, not my older brothers, mine.
I spent a lot of time with it but never finished it as it was pretty hard and just obnoxious to control. Still, seeing that footage gave me major nostalgia. Thanks for reminding me of that little token of my childhood.

Cars 1 on GBA was my childhood, same with Cars 1 and Mater's National Championship on PS2. Revisiting Cars on GBA, actually using the brakes and letting off the throttle through turns makes the game handle a lot better.

You can actually play as Doc, The King, and Chick Hicks. You can only play as them when you are replaying tracks though.

About a year late, but I do recall you can unlock and play as other characters in the first cars game on GBA such as Doc Hudson. I remember doing so as a kid

If any of you has played the first gba cars game, you remember how ridiculously op chick hicks is? You could lap the other racers at least two times during the first piston cup race, its insane af
This was a good video, but I admit I was hoping for more length. Maybe compile short games into one big video, the way IHE does for things like Pixar ripoffs?

Actually when you beat the the tie in game you can play any character on any track
these games are also on the DS but the original cars game is different from what I remember. I had the DS ports when I was a kid and I think the cars game was more like a minigame collection? Mater-national for DS is almost like the GBA port but with bigger tracks? a drifting mechanic where you can save your boost, and custom skins. I'm pretty sure there was more to it but that's all I could remember in the DS ports. Hope to see a video about those ports!

I got both these games as a kid, for the gba, but what I found interesting is that on my version of the first cars gba game, (the isometric one) I was able to play as multiple cars including, doc Hudson, chick hicks, and the blue one based off of the Plymouth superbird (forgot his name tho) while in the emulated version shown here, it's only McQueen
I played the hell out of the mater national on the gba and I remember writting down those save codes after every race lol

i played matternational in the DS and the way i felt everytime i unlocked a new character was awesome
Used to play the ds maternational for hours and hours, must have completed it about 5 times.
I really like isometric racers because you really have to memorize your lines. You might like Micro machines v3 or v4 for ps1 and ps2, especially mm v4 because there are three different camera settings, one of which pans and spins as you race
In the first cars game you can play king chick hicks and someone else i forgot each with their own paintings. Chick Hicks being the fastest but hardest to control.

And the second game reminds me of the Tantalus ATV game, it was also a reskin of Top Gear Rally

You could play as other cars in Cars 1 GBA but you could only play as them if you revisited any of the levels. I remember Chick Hicks being the final character you unlocked and he was super overpowered compared to Lightning. Weird game.

I remember playing this game boy game as a kid.. it was isometric but it wasnt the gba game you played. It was way more zoomed out and the first level involved a prologe where you play as the old cop car guy (Havent seen the move in forever). I think throughout the story you had the option to play as either mcqueen or cop car guy. Never got far in the game though.

My first GBA game was Top Gear Rally as well, even though i couldn't get very far in it cause its quite difficult and i played quite of bit of racing games when i was younger.

I had maternational on the ds as a kid and had a blast with it. The physics were more refined and i remember always steering into the rear axles of the other cars and it would make them spin out. How i beat all the harder levels lol
