Hello! I will comment from Osaka, Japan. I didn't know cardiacs until recently. A woman I love told me about the existence of this band. I was surprised at the crazy rhythm development that was just thrilling and thrilling that I had never heard before. Thanks to Sinthia for teaching me.
So there we were, very green support act to this lot ( my first gig), and this bunch of lovely people play this for their soundcheck. Minds blown - difficult to get on with the gig after that. Their show was extraordinary - played to nearly empty hall but same intensity. Bought a tape (Seaside) and wore it out. Dom (?) the drummer couldn’t have been nicer to me as I cheekily borrowed his cymbals. They were all lovely and without ego. Met Tim at an aftershow years later and recalled the story and we parted with a warm handshake which I can still feel. Chapeau! gentil homme.
It amazes me that in amongst what sounds like utter chaos there's so much control. Tim says "End it there" and the whole band stops on a dime. There must be so much focus needed. Also love the dog.
I wish there were more bands in this genre... If you haven't heard of Deep Turtle, you should check them out. They're a crazy Finnish group that sounds like a cross between Cardiacs and Nomeansno.
Sparks, if you don't know them already. Make sure to check out their 'Lil Beethoven'. When it comes to cardiacs; it befuddles me how a group of people can be this "syncronized", because whatever Cardiacs do, with whatever line-up, it's always incredible...... Where do they make these magic beings?
It's a beautiful and broad "genre". Visit the ABC Convention in Salisbury or the Whole World Window festival in Preston (it's on the 11th of August) and you are going to see all kinds of related bands that hold Tim Smith as their greatest source of inspiration!
+Phobe Romys But then the result of that has nothing to do with Gentle. I can't listen to both on one day. I didn't like one because of the other, but I did stop liking one so much because I started liking the other so much.
Quincepts, this is a sentiment that I have tried to explain to people, but they always look at me like I'm crazy, lol. Sometimes you find a band that is similar to a band that you already like, but better in every way. Then you stop listening to the first band because you could just listen to the better one instead.
I head of them about a year ago from Shane Embry, the bass player from Napalm Death. They have become one of my favorite bands ever. I used to listen to the Oingo Boingo soundtrack for the movie The Forbidden Zone religiously. They very much remind me of Cardiacs. I can't believe I missed out on such an amazing band for so long. Cheers
Genius movements that flow into each other. You want to hear the changes again and again BECAUSE they flow! Fuck me. Such a talent that I miss enormously. I found them too late.
The bad thing about the Cardiacs is ever since I discovered them other music isn't as good. This band is one of the few things that still makes me proud to be a human being.
I literally just discovered these dudes, and already they're like a better version of other bands I already liked but super hard to "sum up". It's some of the most insane and dynamic music I've heard in a long time!
If you say "Gentle Giant" or "XTC," Tim Smith knew them and loved both. I'm not sure how much he loved XTC, though he did have them in his music collection, and he could have been to one of their shows in the later 70s.
@@nicolasmrn I'm not sure about DEVO, I once heard in the Cardiacs Facebook Group that Tim didn't like the DEVO comparison. I can't say about Zappa, either. I don't feel like my feet got wet with Zappa, I only read someone say that the R.E.S. guitar solo is very zappa-esque.
Without doubt this rates in the top three of the most important achievements of the human race. Astounding, exactly the sought of thing Sir Michael Faraday had in mind when he invented electricity. Much love to Tim, you are in our thoughts.
I once walked 9 miles to get home after staying after a gig to talk to TIM. We'd walk a million miles for TIM and the cardiacs. genius. Thank you for uploading this. See you on the facebook page.
I discovered this band a week ago. It makes me look back on the last 35 years with a sense of some bitterness towards my friends, many of whom had heard of The Cardiacs, it turns out, and never mentioned them. Can they even call themselves friends if that's how they're going to act? Genius.
The fact a bandleader can get his mates on board with his absurd vision of what he believes musick to be. And they follow most eagerly with added input to boot.
This is music with no equal (although too many too mention have dipped their toe in the pond, trying to contrive a sound that is so unique, it can never be reproduced) ... melodies and counter melodies and rhythm and timing changes that seem barely plausible! Set against the tsunami of sound that is the Cardiacs! I discovered them in the mid 80's, then music, and my life, were never the same for me again after that. IMHO the greatest and most creative and relevant band to ever come out of the UK! and as for live performances .... I'm afraid i don't have the adjectives to describe them .. but having spent 30+ years watching and playing live gigs, i feel entitled to say without bias, nothing has touched my soul like the cardiacs did the first time i heard that beautiful sound. Nothing in life has affected me so profoundly as that event, and this world is a drab place indeed with the thought i may never experience such a moment again .... peace and love to all cardiacs people, wherever your pond lie
Fucking crazy. Cant say I'm a big fan, but there's no doubting their creativity, their musical chops and their influence which you can hear across the rock spectrum from Mr Bungle to Everything Everything and beyond..
Scaryvideosforyou - it was a video recorded in Mr Corbins bumming shed. It was shown in its entirity at the Salisbury Timmy benefit gig. A fantastic bit of Cardiacs extraordinarynous that will hopefully (PLEASE GOD!) be released during my lifetime. Worth it alone for the Jim trying to plug his bass in section. Suspense worthy of Mr Hitchcock himself!
Eeeeeeexactly.........regardless of where you look, you will NEVER find any words that even come close to approximating this band's fucking brilliant, shining, ineffable musical qualities.
When I’m dead, which won’t happen too long in the future, I want the funeral director to chuck my ashes off the cliffs off the Island in St Ives in Cornwall to a brass band trying to play this.
More talent than can fit in a 4:3 (or 16:9) frame. My biggest regret is that I never traveled to England before '08 to see them play in person. Transcendently good.
I brought Tarred and Feathered back in 87 but never followed up their career as I didn't think they could live up to that song and I'd be disappointed, now I feel I missed out a bit but it's fantastic to have their backlog to watch. What an amazing band. Rest in Peace Tim
Forever, since I discovered them in the early 90's, I've felt that Tim and the Cardiacs were born into the world of music a significant number of generations before their time. Had the luxury of seeing them a number of times live, and this only affirmed this belief.
This version is far better than the riginal. The balance of the instruments, the dog and Tim's comments are precious. Just loving it. At time a favourite from the Cardiacs :)
Even as a late to the party (2010ish) participant in the Cardiacs I've seen such a influx of new interest and even more people in the comments saying the same "omg is this real, why haven't i heard these guys, this is like x/y/z but better etc etc"
One of my best weekends ever was spent camping in the back of a dirty tour van to see the Cardiacs in London with my best mates. Ah, brilliant mosh pit memories.
When I first heard this I thought it was a joke, but it grew on me ... like thrush ... and now its a part of my life ,,, itches a bit though !!!. Cardiacs rule !. Hello's to Franno, Chauncey and Raven. x.
+Smith Wesson Yeah Barney dedicated Extremity Retained on Live Corruption vid "This next one goes out to the Cardiacs" and it was a bit of a search back then. But..... thanks internets and youtube. :D My fave all time band forever and ever.
Like he said: GET EVERYTHING. I have recently done so can honestly tell you: this band has precisely ZERO bad songs. I believe they are the ONLY band to accomplish such a feat.....(Hmm...can't think of a bad Mr. Bungle song....but STILL). BUY EVERYTHING!!!

Welcome to the Cardiacs family Amelia!!
Just watched a whole show ...incredible.
My favourite "punk" band is Japanese.(Gissm.) 🏴
Love the cardiacs saw them early took pictures I still got, shame about Tim will always ❤️

We lost a Legend and musical genius today. R.I.P Tim and God bless. You're singing with God now
Never mind the fuckin dog, someone needs to answer that telephone
In DOG I trust

First time i heard them it was this song and i was like, "Is this....is this punk?" I think it is in its own way
Rehearsal my ass. Even the dog is on point.
go to the top of the class you fucking genius
😂😂😂
Sounds like Gentle Giant snorted all the coke ever and then proceeded to pick a fight with Madness - I like it!
+Phobe Romys Brilliant! One of the most perfect assessments of a Cardiacs tune ever!
+Phobe Romys verily.
+Phobe Romys But then the result of that has nothing to do with Gentle. I can't listen to both on one day. I didn't like one because of the other, but I did stop liking one so much because I started liking the other so much.

3:43 That polyrhythm with the drums against the 5 note bursts is insane
A heart-attack spells the end of cardiacs, the irony :(
Thanks for years of high-strung, mind-boggling and utterly genious music.
Fu**King genius the pond will never dry up
Genius movements that flow into each other. You want to hear the changes again and again BECAUSE they flow! Fuck me. Such a talent that I miss enormously. I found them too late.
And I mean him...and the many talented musicians Tim Smith played with.
This is so perfect that I can't help but think that the dog part was planned, and executed perfectly
The bad thing about the Cardiacs is ever since I discovered them other music isn't as good. This band is one of the few things that still makes me proud to be a human being.
Rest in peace Tim, you giant of a man.. Be strong Jim, you are in all our thoughts. 👍
Holy shit! This is the most amazing band I've ever heard.

Sounds like chaos but it's incredibly tight. So much talent in one line up. Misunderstood but with a fervant following who get this!
It doesn't get any better than Cardiacs. And I mean it.
that is because they were the most amazing band anyone's ever heard
This track is electricity, a shock, a ray in the dark.
It doesn't get better. Ever.
I literally just discovered these dudes, and already they're like a better version of other bands I already liked but super hard to "sum up". It's some of the most insane and dynamic music I've heard in a long time!
Unfortunately Tim Smith, the singer, died last year.
Oooo wanna throw some of those band names at me? I love the obscure shit.
If you say "Gentle Giant" or "XTC," Tim Smith knew them and loved both. I'm not sure how much he loved XTC, though he did have them in his music collection, and he could have been to one of their shows in the later 70s.

One of my all-time top ten favourite bands. So sad to hear Tim's demise RIP.
Bet you that's Jim's dog.
Brought him along but wasn't allowed inside, probably. That Jim.
Happy birthday Jim.
Tim has finally decided to go and find the fucking dog. I bet he finds it too. You’ll see. RIP lovely Tim.
Vanilla Coffee ironically a cardiac arrest ended the cardiacs lead singer , there original name was Cardiac Arrest
