    I think Jim’s presence in the Protoss mission showed something that Starcraft 2 really could’ve used more of: Outsiders among the main heroes. Someone whose viewpoint is so notably different from the main cast that they help shed a light on things. It just made things seem more universal and real, rather than every faction feeling so heavily segmented...

      @@lucifersatan8240 I can see one unusual Protoss deciding to help Raynor out, feeling that the Terran was worthy of that kind of respect. I mean, he helped destroy the Overmind, Protoss trip over themselves to give him props whenever he interacts with them, it wouldn’t be too hard.
      For HOTS? No, no Protoss or Terran would’ve joined the swarm, but been a captive, like that Protoss for a couple missions on the frost world? Or maybe just have Stukov show up much earlier in the campaign and help out. That campaign desperately needed a different perspective from the Zerg-dominated one, just to make things a bit less one-note.

      Honestly, Nyod and the Tal'Darim during WoL should have been a temporary allied faction who turn on Raynor later. Have some dialogue about the Protoss and Tal'Darim ways of life and perspective, a lot of it against Terran concepts, making it understandable why he'd be fought later.
      Stukov also should have showed up in HoTS way earlier for his UED culture clashing with the Zerg and Korprulu Terran values.
      LoTV...actually did a fairly good job with this with all of the Protoss faction leaders' different cultures and goals clashing at times. Loved Rohana's disgust with orifices as a glimpse into what physical traits the Protoss find weird compared to our standards, completely alien and petty yet from their logic and culture makes perfect sense,

    I also really liked this mission growing up, I still think it's one of my favorite no-build missions. There's nothing really special about it, you can't really lose unless you're an idiot, but I think the theming is on point. Rather than just "another Terran installation", you're walking through the fields of Auir, which makes it feel way more organic and less claustrophobic. I like that you keep running into rescuable Protoss who are in mid-combat with the Zerg throughout the mission, it really feels like you are still IN THE MIDDLE of a war zone. I feel like you can really intuitively feel the objective by playing the mission; there are Zerg everywhere, you are cutting your way through them, and you are trying to escape before they overwhelm you. It's simple, but very effective.

    SC1 Artanis Jump scare.
    Also it's debatable that the Executor in episode 4 is Selendis. The only thing supporting her is that she is an Executor in SC2 and knows firsthand of Raynor's deeds on Aiur being the only SC2 Executor to mention Raynor while everyone else sans Artanis and Zeratul are pretty bung headed about Raynor but again iirc there's virtually no evidence that hard denies that she ISN'T the episode 4 executor. It's one of those lore tidbits that if it were confirmed it wouldn't change anything but it also isn't confirmed.

    • @Aliencommander1245
      @Aliencommander1245 2 роки тому

      There's more evidence than that, Selendis' first appearance in the lore is during the DT saga trilogy of books, during which she expresses knowledge and first hand experience about the Enslavers campaigns (two lots of narrative light extra missions for SC1 and Brood war, that got expanded out to become the core of that trilogy of books) which involved missions back to aiur that were kept secret from the rest of the daelaam (because there was evidence uncovered there were still surviving protoss on aiur, and the daelaam had no resources to go and stage a large scale rescue mission). Given those missions were carried out by the BW executor, Selendis' position of priveldged knowledge about them and being there imply she was the one in command, though it doesn't confirm it.

    Wasn't Artanis supposed to be the player's charcater in Brood War? Or was that in the base Starcraft?
    As for Aldaris, I think he has a really good and underappreciated character arc in the two campaigns.

    So was it really necessary to evacuate Auir? Fenix and Raynor spent half the game camped out by the warp gate and seemed like they had no problems until Duran and the UED showed up and kicked the hornet's nest.

    Blizzard says that the ep 3 executor is Artanis but IMO it makes no sense. The executor in ep 3 talks a lot with Tassadar and in BW Artanis says he isn't worthy to even speak his name. How does that even work? It would make a lot more sense if the ep 3 and 4 executor was the same person and was Selendis or someone else.

    Artanis is stuck in 64 graphics because he hasn't yet proven himself as Leader of the Protoss. He's gotta earn those graphics, just like how he's gotta earn some clothing.
    ...which is actually weird, now that I think about it. He's the *leader* of the Protoss yet he's wearing like, a bandolier and a loincloth. It's wild. Maybe he couldn't get dressed during the invasion and was just stuck running around in his undies until they could get established on Sha'kurr.

    So, I'm not going to argue over whether Artanis looked better in Sc1 or SC2 because that's a matter of taste. What I don't get is why they changed his appearance so fundamentally between games. Also, I imagine I got lucky, but I once completed this mission without taking any HP damage, so yeah, deathless is definitely possible.

    • @LegendaryLycanthrope
      @LegendaryLycanthrope 2 роки тому

      What actually changed between the two games besides the color of his eyes and his donning of garb appropriate to his station as Hierarch? His overall appearance doesn't seem to have changed overly much between the two games, other than being given far higher detail in SC2.

    The executor for Broodwar Protoss, is the same as normal Starcraft Protoss, it’s Artanis
    How do I know this? The wiki and retcon
    But Starcraft 1 is why Artanis leads the Protoss in two.
    I don’t know why there’s all this confusion and idea it’s Selendis, previous Protoss campaign someone covered that lord wise. The executor of SC1 was Artanis, and since they follow each other, logic says it’s still artanis.
    Now, how Artanis is the executor when he was just promoted after tassadar dies? Go fight blizzard I’m not in charge of the continuity
    But keep in mind Raynor would’ve been the PC in Rebel yell (Terran campaign 1) if they could’ve fit it into the lore.

  • @davidkang5626

    What I would like for a SC2 playthrough would be to play with a balanced/somewhat-lore-friendly unit composition. I think that would be interesting instead of spamming just one unit.
    Maybe give that a try. :)

    Talking about Aiur, it makes me think little we see of protoss civilians if there are any. There are no kids or anything. Probably prevents the setting from being revolting.. Because with protoss kids they'd probably have been killed by the Zerg.. Anyway just rambling.

The beginning of the final mission in the base game implied they were still around, now suddenly they're gone? Did they somehow get wiped out in the interim between the beginning of the assault on the Overmind and its death, or was that some massive retcon?

      Well there isn't a gas geyser in your starting base so you only have Marines (and maybe Vultures?) against bunkers, mines, tanks, goliaths, and firebats. You'd have to be a god, or know of good points to fly in buildings to beat all that without Duran and his "secret" path.

    It is pretty much settled that you play as Artanis in "The Fall". I am not as certain about you playing as Selendis in "The Stand" though but, it is widely accepted among the fandom. There's an interesting theory I've heard that Selendis was actually the executor who was commanding the Conclave's forces you fight in "The Fall" which I though was cool but, there is no evidence for it either.

    • @Aliencommander1245

      If selendis was the executor in Brood War then she was probably given the position during sc1, after Artanis was stripped of it. It's the kind of thing that's only evidence is a string of implications, but it's interesting

    ok, sure, this executor being selendis sounds reasonable, but how could chadtanis be the executor in the last one? Even if he got replaced by selendis for betraying the conclave, why would he need to introduce himself in this mission? it just seems like lazy retconing years after broodwar

    • @Aliencommander1245
      @Aliencommander1245 2 роки тому

      There's not a lot of in-game indication you've swapped, but Artanis is the sc1 executor so we know a different person is the BW protagonist just from that (i imagine because he was stripped of his rank by the conclave as part of sc1, they just immediately replaced him, the same as what happened to tassadar).
      I don't know if that was intended at the time the game came out, but it was first confirmed in a book that came out in like 2007/6 so if it wasn't, they changed their mind about it pretty quickly

    I'm pretty sure it *has* been officially confirmed that this Executor is Selendis... but on the other hand, when Selendis appears in Wings of Liberty, she talks as though she knows who Jim is but has never actually met him ("your bravery and service to Aiur are known to us," not "good to see you again, buddy!"). Make of that what you will?

    • @cjayhay
      @cjayhay 2 роки тому

      (The Starcraft fan wiki page on Selendis says that she "was promoted to executor, acting as Artanis' assistant and commanding the combined military forces of the protoss" during the Brood War, and cites an interview with Chris Metzen, but unfortunately the link to the interview no longer works)

    • @alexstewart9592
      @alexstewart9592 2 роки тому +1

      @@cjayhay Well, the new Executor in the BW campaign was not present for the slaying of the Overmind, and in this mission they aren't where Jim is until the very end, which means that they only actually SAW Jim on Aiur for under a minute, with most of his remaining forces having already warped out and with Fenix and a bunch of Protoss with him - they didn't really see him IN ACTION.
      In fact, this would explain why Selendis can recognise him on sight but only really knows him by reputation - she briefly saw him during the evacuation of Aiur but never saw him actually fighting, and she would remember what he looks like because a human on that planet is unusual.
