The Importance Of Human Connection Featuring Alan Watts | Answers With Joe Short (Repost)

  • Alan Watts says that "Existence is a function of relationships." That we crave connection not because it's something we need to build, it's a discovery of something that already exists.
Scientific studies have shown that looking into someone's eyes for 10 minutes can actually change your consciousness. That's how hard-wired we are for connection, even if we may feel introverted and alone.
Take some time to hold eye contact with someone and see how it changes you.

My wife an I sat down one evening long ago and gazed into each other's eyes for 10 minutes. We decided to try the challenge about a month after we started dating.
The wellspring of emotion and the darkness filled vacuum I felt.... Like I had truly never met another human being until that moment enveloped me with self loathing and pure happiness. I cried tears of relief and joy that I was not alone in this world after all...
She is not only my wife, but my best friend... You learn so much from others if you just let go.
Bravo on the video, I think you did an amazing job, and you ending it with being bashful was classic. You have talent Joe!

Well done. I've enjoyed a bunch of your older videos and appreciate you sharing this one. Don't let the Science blowhards dissuade you from connecting themes you cover with the Deep themes of humanity. Our academic process has made us overly dependent on being reductionist... It's important to bring things back together. Peace.

Making your self stare at peoples faces may give you a different experience but you may also find it freaky. After all it is what babies and small children do when they are first learning to recognise and read the human face. It's a vital part of their early learning. I would suggest that as adults you are adopting a regressive behaviour which may benefit you particularly if you missed out on your early facial recognition.

Just hopped over from your last live feed, the EM and Eye Planet one, while this may be interesting to most. There is a small minority, or majority depending on how you look at it (IRL v. Online) where eye contact doesn't hold the same allure, or effect as it does with others. I for one have had to train myself to make eye contact, since it does nothing for me.
I am, of course speaking of Aspies, or persons with Asperger's. Eye contact does nothing, I would literally be bored out of my mind if I had to stare into someone's eyes for 1 min. No connection would be formed. And most likely the other person would feel cheated, or creeped out. Since they would feel the "connection" was not formed, while I would... well feel nothing.
Not complaining, or judging, just offering a thought on those that would be, and are left out of this experience.

If you stare at the sun for a minute. Life afterwards will be darkness in comparison. Because, you'll be blind. Seriously though, I have chased some amazing sunsets and sunrises. The ordinary light of day is just a different world to the simple yet magical passage of time you can see as the sun rises and sets. Let the sunshine (oh let it shine!), Let the sunshine in (come on), The sunshine in. (Oh everyone sing along Come on!) Now everybody just sing along, And let the sunshine on in, Open up your heart
And let it shine on you...

When Alan Watts used the word "relationship" he did not mean "human connection". Listen carefully and think about his analogy with one ball.
It grinds my gears that this video used totally unrelated fragment of a speech and most people were like "this is great" "oh, Alan Watts is genius" etc.
