- Robin Wall Kimmerer takes us on a guided nature tour of Clark Reservation State Park in Jamesville, NY as Spring welcomes back migrating creatures and sends a message to wake up those who have taken a Winter rest.

Robin Wall Kimmerer is a mother, scientist, decorated professor, and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. She is the author of Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teaching of Plants and Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses. She lives in Syracuse, New York, where she is a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Environmental Biology, and the founder and director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment.

First of all "Braiding Sweetgrass" is one of my favorite books ever. I have it on audio book too where Dr. Kimmerer does the reading and I think her voice has healing waves. One of my biggest inspirations as a writer and as a citizen of the planet. 💚💚💚💚

I’m listening to it just now, and her narration is extraordinary. Few books are narrated SO well by the author, where the emotions stemming from personal experiences shine in their voice.
Same here. I have Braiding Sweetgrass in all 3 media, only one of two in my collection upon which I own all 3 media.
I love how passionate she is, you can feel the pure child like excitement as she guides us through this little forest adventure ☺️ and oh my gosh when she talked about the moss and what they can teach us 🌱💛
Reading 'Braiding Sweetgrass' was a magical and humbling experience. But being on a virtual nature walk with her is just mesmerising. her passionate words indicate an intimate relationship with Nature. It is pure and inspirational. So glad to have come across this human 💚💚💚
I am reading Braiding Sweetgrass now. I read one chapter at a time. I need time to reflect and digest. This book has changed my daily walks, and outdoor time time. What a joy to “stumble” upon the author. Love her voice, informal presentation, wisdom and love of our earth and all that is. Northern California fan.
i’m in bed recovering from an illness and i can’t get outside right now. i don’t have words for how healing this video was. it’s such a gift to hear her share her ways of walking through the world, like having a friend share their most cherished memories and stories of the trees and the birds. i look forward to the day when i can go outside again and walk in the woods.

Prof. Kimmerers' joy, respect and love for the earth come through her narration of this beautiful walk through the woods. Her knowledge of medicine, plants, her people's language and culture, the manner of teaching are so inspiring. Would love to meet her in person! I also really enjoyed the way she closed the walk with gratitude for the earth and nature.

There really is another person who walks with trees. As a small part Indian myself perhaps that is the part if me that cries at human greed and ignorance.
@@lyndumoulin573 For me it's the same with my teeny bit of Powhatan mixed with a bunch of Irish and ancesters who were farmers and enthusiastic hikers and backpackers. (Grandma hiked in a dress!) I live in the forest on a lake. It provides me with endless daily solace and joy to just sit outside. This year I'm committed to learning more about the edible plants in the forest and the desert below it. Every year I eat thimbleberries and blackberries I forage from the forest, but I know there is so much more.

I love how enthusiastic she is about it, I could listen to more teachers if they actually seemed like they cared for their subject of study, rather than droning on about it. I love her! Her book has made me see nature in such a different light and has awoken a remarkable interest in plants. :)
My experience with science instruction has been so different from yours--and from Robin Wall Kimmerer's experience. I almost stopped reading "Braiding Sweetgrass" in the first chapter, because it seemed wrong--and unfair. I have a degree in botany from University of Idaho, mid 1990s (north-central Idaho, great plant diversity, and in the Nez Perce Nation's lands) and was able to also take many courses in zoology, soils, forestry & ag, writing, and human nutrition. Out of 40 instructors, maybe 2 droned, or were poorly-informed or narrow-minded? Not a single scientist was rigidly focused only on perfectly repeatable findings in their research! They were always on the lookout for new observations, especially directly in nature. Talking with a classmate in General Botany (who became a pharmacist), we discovered that although many students in this course hated how they couldn't predict what would be on exams, we found greater value in the professor's untameable, ecologically broad approach.
What a beautiful being... a perfect teacher as well. Thank you. I just put her book on hold through my library.

We are one with nature
Most plants that pop up in areas where they aren’t supposed to be found, are there b/c the wind blows the seeds…or the birds eat the seeds and poop out what they can’t digest. My yard is riddled with bittersweet and other plants that I didn’t put there, but the birds sure did. Lol!

I came here after reading "Braiding Sweetgrass", on the question what a European could learn from it. And on how a Native American sees America today, a continent that seems much stranger than India to me, and I've been to India a lot and speak Hindi. Am I native? By EU definition, I am not, only Basques and Saami are native in Europe. But there is a village whose woods have taught me. It is not where I live now and not the same as my father's. What does it mean to receive the gifts of nature in a country with 3500 years of commercial salt mining and ham production? What does it mean to share nature in a country in which each acre of land is owned by someone, and where there are, indeed, 15.5 square miles of primordial forest left? What is the difference between bark weaving and traditional hand-crafted linen? People are very romantic about the forest over here, but do they learn from it?
There are many more questions that I would like to ask to Prof. Kimmerer, but I have read her book so carefully, ironically almost like the Bible, that I forgot the beginning and need to read it again. Maybe you can add some ideas meanwhile.
I say pay heed to her advice - nurture an intimate relationship with the land. See resources as gifts to be valued rather than as commodities to be exploited. Just as introduced plant species can become naturalized, so too can you.
