Yo. I thought the slaps were the best bit🤣🤣🤣, not at all. Thanks for including me, an honour to be invited. Note to self, going to have to up my editing game. Note to Jeff, keep talking about the branding, usually a dirty word but I really think it goes hand in hand with whisky. Lastly, re your scoring system, big 👍. One of my pet hates (got loads) is arbitrarily rounded numbers. 24 is much better than 10, or 30, or 100!!!👍👍👍
Couldn't agree with your more, been super excited to see the travelling slaps and fit perfect in this video. Hope you continue the slap tradition going on your tours!. Think you maybe one of the only fans of the 24 score, get a lot of feedback saying it should change to something else. Cheers to you fella!
Make sure to check out his UA-cam channel, great stuff on there! Also his Insta is banging for seeing the amazing world of Scotland. Cheers for watching Lay Kyle 🥃
Very interesting discussion to have here & that you did initiate well with this video (about consistency, preservation, marketing strategy in a time of economical crisis-a crisis not for everyone-mind you), Diageo greediness, etc...I don't have much time to develop my opinion today there but tbh, as some, I'm thinking about what would become such an iconic & mass market & more than decent age statement whisky like this over time when they did release the 8 yo first as an anniversary bottling in 2016...One might say that it is possible we'll see the 16 disappear in the near future & I have to remind people that it is not the first time this question was put on the table when there was a serious shortage of good Lagavulin old casks in 2005 & 2006 when some poor batches appeared on the market (I had one) so they discontinued it for several months & shortly after that they did include other distilleries than the 6 first references in the "Classic Malts" extended core range...for me clearly Caol Ila was chosen for that, as some Diageo staff did confirm it to me at the time in "off mode"...We'll see...Cheers !
Cheers Greg, rare that I step into interesting territory! 😂didn't know that about the poor batches, I wondered if something similar happened to Talisker 18 as it seemed to disappear of the shelves for a couple of months before the price increase. Thanks for watching 🥃
Hi Jeff, as usual an entertaining video. Got a closed Laga 16 which I bought around three years ago. Don’t buy anymore because of the price hike, especially with the weak stat’s. Oh, and I’m one of the 2%👍. Slàinte Jeff.
I think you've been very fair in evaluating this one, Jeff. It might be an icon in the broader story of whisky as a whole, but Diageo's pricing policy has humbled it terribly. My last bottle cost me €45 on special in 2018 (it's now €70 on special offer). Haven't bought one since. I find the presentation of the 8yo much better (at 48% ABV) and enjoy the vibrant kick it offers. Loved the editing you did with Offerman's Ron Swanson clips. Cheers.
Cheers Russell, think you put it brilliantly there, it has been humbled. The 8yo has a lot going for it and I can see it replacing the 16yo on that pedestal. Thanks for the kind words!
Ps, careful with the requests for incremental price rises. With the Lagavulin 25 year old the emphasis is on the mental. In 2019 it was £750, it went to £850, then £1,000, then last year jumped to £1,990😮
Best review yet! Lagavulin 16 hasn't been as good in the last couple of years. Shared my last bottle from last year out as was too painful to drink it. "They don't make em like they used to".
Thanks CandoPeat, means alot! I have seen a fair few people agree with you stating that it went down hill so was glad to do it as a comparison with a newer bottle.
Cheers for commenting Pieter! The video inserts are certainly the best tool to try and polish the reviews. I am planning on popping the Laga 8 next but would be great to hear your thoughts if you grab one!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Mr. Slapper. Used to love this one, but would not replace my bottle when it is killed. And I'm not even talking about the price... rediculous increase. 'Nough said. Slàinte mhath
Thanks Mr Peat Head, I think that is the same boat as so many others, I nearly ordered another one a couple of weeks back where it was down to £60 but couldn't bring myself to it. All the best! Slàinte mhath
Cheers Gav, I felt the differences I felt was more due to the bottle being opened for a while and not a dip, yet so many people claim over the last few years it has really dipped. The price certainly has changed! Cheers for watching!
I've found that when bottles are open longer, they tend to soften out some of the sharp edges, rather than getting "Mick Jagger'd"... but that's with Irish whiskeys, and maybe the smoke in this has a different reaction. Anyway, it's a shame that some classics are either disappearing or getting increasingly expensive
Sorry I missed this comment! I think you are completely right that overtime the oxygen smooths it out more, sometimes that is a great thing... other times not so much. I do find it to be most obvious in smokier drams. Cheers for watching!
Good point, you do hear a lot about how certain whiskies don't match the splendor they once had. Talk about a Wild World of Slaps! Well done on several points today!
@@JeffWhisky less so these days. I do still love the distillers edition. Overall, I'd rather have a CS Caol Ila, Ledaig, Ardna or heavily peated Scotia. I've got a half left bottle of Laga 16 in the cupboard though and I must get through one a year.
Nice one Jeff! That slaps becoming an epidemic!!! I don't much fancy the Lagavulin 8, it feels way too harsh and bright for me. The 16 is nice yeah but at today's price and situation it's just that. So many other great whiskies out there. Cheers dude!
The slap spreads far and wide! That's interesting regarding the Lagavulin 8, as I have mostly heard positive things but wonder if the youth will be it's downfall. Looking forward to trying it! Cheers for watching buddy.
Loved the video Jeff. Down here in Australia... prices vary from $180 to $200. I have one from 2016 and 2022. Won't get another ..that's it for me. The 12yr cask strength at $220 to me is lovely and heaps better value (was a shared bottle with a mate). Keep the vids coming ! thanks, AL
Cheers for watching Al, do you find much difference between the two? That price difference between the 12 cask strength is so close, seems a no brainer really. 👋🥃
@@JeffWhisky Latest is a lot 'thinner'. To me...The Ardbeg line-up crushes it. The Corryvreckan...., the Uigedail ...Geee, even the 10yr at almost half the price kicks the Lag 16 to the gutter !
This was the first peated whisky that I tasted after a long time not even thinking about having a peated whisky. I have to say it was just fantastic. So it was a good introduction to the peat. It's almost 20 yrs later and I moved on. probably my palate has changed over the years. I haven't tried it for a long time. So it can be a disappointment from that first wow moment
Cheers for commenting k.nl, I think you are right about it being a good introduction to peat, a softer yet still powerful step into that smokey world. Be interesting to hear your thoughts if you did return to it, but wondering what you have moved on to now? Cheers!
I’m really jaded about Diageo generally; though this was my gateway whisky years ago, I’ll likely never buy it again. It’s about $165 in my province, and I don’t spend that on 43%, chill-filtered and caramel coloured whisky. I recently picked up the latest Offerman edition, which is a little more affordable, and I really like it.
Woah, didn't expect it to be hitting that high price to be honest. Completely can see why it is not on the "buy again" list especially with the Offerman edition being cheaper, here it tends to be similar in price. What would be your go to Islay Whisky? Cheers for watching!
@@JeffWhisky I kinda ran the Islay gamut, but for the past long time I’ve considered Ardbeg and Bruichladdich the pinnacle for me. An Octomore once made me positively weepy.

You are far too kind or you must have accidentally commented on the wrong channel 😂. Cheers to you buddy!
What if I am a Whisky Slapper and a Scotch whacker?? Nice video Jeff, £65 is a fair price but beyond that is beyond a joke!
We accept all here! Yeah at £65 I would be happy at that price but when I spot it at over £100 it is just painful. Cheers for watching 🥃
Good to see the classic "Kinging It" clip in there. This whisky has become too thin to enjoy anymore.
After you leaving this comment 6 months ago and UA-cam only telling me now, I had to relook at what this clip was! Cheers Mr Leg.

7 HOURS AND THE CODE HASN'T BEEN FOUND!
I can confirm, the code was found after 8 hours! It appeared on the bottle label around the 9 minute mark. Let me know if it was you who found it.
