And the controller from what I can tell was very polarized. Some people liked it well enough, but I think the biggest issue was the trackpad and lack of a D-pad for people. This Deck seems like a new type of beast entirely. It combines the access PCs have to a wide range of features with the portability of a switch. And, I don't think the video went over this, the thing is supposed to have a purchasable dock later, like the switch. I believe the dock comes with an HDMI port, so you can theoretically just use the thing as your main gaming PC, that you can move between a monitor or tv with far more ease than a traditional tower. This is interesting but I just don't see what market really wants this. Its not competing with Nintendo because of the nature of Nintendo fans, and more high end PC users probably wont jump at it either because it cant compete with their current hardware. If the market is just gonna rely on console users switching sides I don't see this having much of a place. I don't think it'll flop but I feel like it really wont compare with the competition.
I think it's going to be people who want to dip their toes into PC gaming, diehard Valve fans, and PC gamers who want to play some of their games on the go/in bed/on the toilet. Sure that's a collection of somewhat niche audiences but I think all of them combined will be enough to justify it. I know I wouldn't mind getting to play a lot of games from my collection in bed
This is the first console in awhile that i've been actually excited for. Being able to lay my steam games (especially RTS games) on a handheld has been a dream of mine for a couple decades now.
For some reason youtube is deleting my comments and it's pissing me off. Just wanted to point out how Valve has a bad history with producing then abandoning projects. I preordered the Deck, but I'm fully expecting the same thing that happened to the Machines, Controller, and Link.
The reason why I reserved a Steam deck was the fact that it's a linux machine with an incredible amount of input options. That means that it'll probably be able to run retroarch right out of the box with two analog sticks, eight trigger buttons, a D pad, four more front buttons, two clicking touchpads, and a touchscreen. That's an absolutely insane amount of ways to map older games onto the hardware. The thing will probably be an emulation beast, and if it's successful enough, we could probably see emulation devs working to make games work best on the system.
I'm excited because I've recently gone a lot more mobile with my work and the switch has been a godsend for that but as I was looking into PCs and stuff this came into my existence that I pre-ordered it as soon as I could. Give me the variety. I like it
Yep, I realized while owning my PS4 how very similar to a PC it really was. I skipped getting a PS5/Xbox whatever and went to PC gaming...and got a Switch Lite for when I want to go on the go (mostly for 3rd party games)- to be fair, I didn't know this portable steam device was going to be a thing.
If they nick name it "The Gabe Boy" and they have HL3 on it as an exclusive. Like it only runs on that thing I'd bet they'd struck gold in sales or at least become such a big meme that they won't need to invest in marketing.
I'm just glad it has a lot of ram, also it's kind of weird that they first said the storage wasn't ugradeable but later said it does have an m.2 slot, were they afraid of being criticized?
Mr Whimsu man you can play the newest Switch games on this with the power of the dark evil emulation Yes i know most of the nintendopeople wont bother with the yuzus and the emulators but still you can kind of play switch on it

I haven't cared for consoles in generations. I only have a PS4 because it was basically given to me This is super neat though Most of my gaming is done handheld with my Vita, I use an 07 iMac with an HDD still so even using this docked as a PC would be an upgrade
I'm just happy that the difference between PC and console isn't so massive anymore. I don't know enough about PC gaming, but I find it really dumb there aren't any really good pre built options.
I feel like this thing was just made for me, I originally was going to get a steam machine but I was worried that valve would discontinued services for it because no one else wanted one so I ended up getting a PS4 instead. Now we’re moving onto the next generation and I don’t see anything good in getting a Ps5 or Xbox series X so this is just perfect for me.
i still find myself trouble shooting the stupidest problems on pc games. but the good part is if there's a glitch you cant live with it can most likely be patched by a third party, developer be dammed. that said YOU KNOW HL3 GONNA BE STEAM EXCLUSIVE, take that cant buy a console a year after launch sony!
@@ItsKagiVids Yes but it's not default. They are improving Linux for gaming and making it the default OS on the deck. I think most people who use the deck will probably be using the default Linux os if it turns out to be decent which means developers may make their games specifically work with Linux just to cater to that crowd hence weakening Window's strangle hold on PC gaming
I do think that the idea of a less expensive gaming PC for people with too low income for regular hardcore pc gaming is a great idea, I just accidentally broke my laptop screen recently. Even the latest next gen gaming laptops of today will cost over $1000 dollars, so I like Steam's vision, it's a lot more revolutionary than you think.
I don’t think the switch proved there’s a market for “real” games on the go, I think it proved there’s a market for Nintendo first party titles. The switch just happens to be portable as well. I don’t see the steam deck doing well. It might do just well enough to stick around, but I doubt it’ll be a real contender in the console wars.
@@dudesupreme191 true, second party companies are working on it too... but you can count third party Switcg games with one hand, so technically, the Switch is maintained almost entirely by Nintendo games, specially Zelda, Pokémon and Mario.
@@dudesupreme191 Whereas it's been true that third party games account for a meaningful percentage of sales in Nintendo consoles throughout the years, I don't think you can just look at raw sales numbers and say Nintendo's first party games aren't a huge driving force in their success. Even if second and third party games sell more overall, are they the reason why someone is buying Nintendo over another system? Plus, there's really no case to be made for a "myth" when talking about the Switch. Six out of the top ten best sellers are Nintendo titles, the other ones are Super Smash Bros, Super Mario Party, and two Pokemon games. Mario and the gang are system sellers, provided the system isn't too Nintendo-ey to be appealing to the masses. The first party games get people in the door, the other games are more important with regards to extending the life cycle. That could be interpreted as "carrying" but you can only keep momentum if you have it in the first place. Even Nintendo's console flops have sales numbers that outrank any other competitor that isn't named Sony, Microsoft, or once upon a time, Sega and Atari. That's definitely not because people find a lot of value in playing the latest version of Madden with whatever strange controller Nintendo is throwing out that generation.
"Yes my hot take is a $3,000 pc is going to run better than your PS5" Clever, lol. Ha! I wish my shit only cost $3,000. With this generations 3090 water cooling is pretty much a must if you wish to get your money's worth out of the card, or at least game for more than half an hour.

I almost never play my switch not that it's bad I'm just adhd but even then I still think I would have been happier with anything remotely like what everyone thinks this steam deck thing will be like. I wish I had bought a ds instead and hacked it to be completely honest at this point now tht DS has been officially ended
The current PC I use was alright when I built it, but as technology moves forward, and my computer doesn't, I find that I have less and less to play due to a lack of availability on my increasingly potato'd machine. Assuming this thing lives up to the promise of playing most, if not all, modern games decently, I see it as a very enticing choice of an upgrade instead of spending probably twice as much or more on a new rig.
I just want to know how good can it handle high end games. Obviously Cyberpunk won't be playable. I have a feeling games from the early 2010s will be its limit.
The Deck has 2 teraflops, which is more than what the ps4/xbox one has. So, yeah, maybe it will run at 30 fps at 720p, which is completely fine on that screen.
I have a reasonable mid-range or better gaming PC (RTX 2060 Super, i7-4790, 16gigs ram) and I have a Steam Deck pre-ordered as well. I like the idea of having something I can use on the go that's smaller and cheaper than a gaming laptop. I like not being locked into one companies store or at their mercy for updates.
Id really love if this helps push linux. I dont use linux because every single program i regularly use doesnt work on it, but if the steam deck legitimizes it a bit more itll hopefully help to push more companies to make thier stuff work on linux AND maybe someday in the future we won't need shitty bloated spyware windows anymore.
The problem is most of the potential gamers wouldn't be using its Linux feature, so the system boost would be marginal. The truth about Linux is its market is too spread and specialized that most of the software must be recompiled for every distro, something people would be too lazy to learn (man, I'm a software developer and I'm too lazy to use a Linux OS on my personal laptop).
Mrlsp has it right, Linux will always be a bit vague to most users. But it will expose people to it. There's always gonna be that barrier of people who won't try to build a program themselves. The reality is if you can figure it out, there are some more open source programs that become entirely free when you do. It was mentioned the screen was touch as well, which does technically mean that if programs can be accessed out of docked mode, this does have potential to act as a true mobile PC with touch functionality, which, outside of mobile phones (which are extremely closed source, as much as android says its open) is really one of the first to actually be mainstream in any capacity. It'll take some serious users to realize that, but it may inspire some people to start seeing dockable phones as a thing. It could theoretically revolutionize the mobile PC market again.
Remember that this thing run an Arch derivative which means that It has access to the Arch repos to and extent and the AUR, literally where all the new software comes first and all packages in binaries (or source than you can build if you so choose) plus you even got alternative packaging cross distro formats like Flatpacks
Looking how relatively easy is emulating a Switch on PC and if the Gabe Boy has enough power and freedom in its system, then Nintendo would be going to the courts before you can say "it's a me, Mario"... specially if modern systems are really x86-x64 architectures with some modifications (a good response of why porting games got more efficient in recent years).

There a mobile app variant still available), because what it could do wasn't really hard to do in other existing ways that were likely cheaper.
It's an ambitious piece of hardware. Far more than their previous endeavors. Now they just have to present results. It could always flop, which is why despite my pseudo-gushing, I'm just cautiously optimistic. But as long as it plays games well and the hardware is relatively durable, I think it'll be a hit. And at least Steam is willing to try new things once in a while, even if they don't all find success.
I’m still kind of annoyed that I didn’t get a Steam Controller for cheap, even though I prefer using JoyCons and DualShock4s over Bluetooth anyway.
We need to do everything in our power to make the Gabe Boy the official name of the Steam Deck. Everyone start the petition and hashtags
That's why Change (dot) Org was invented.
getting this going via youtube won’t work. You need the soldiers of reddit/4chan/8chan/8kun to really get it off the ground.
“Wouldn’t it be wacky if half life 3 was steam OS exclusive?” 😳😳😳
Half-life being Linux exclusive would be so wild lol
nah, half-life 3 already exists and is a steamVR exclusive

I think there’s a big audience of PC users that will want this device for playing their library when they’re away from their desktop for a long periods of time. For me, the convenience of just docking this machine to my tv and playing with any kind of controller is more than enough. PC offers you all kinds of freedom you can’t get on consoles so putting all that in the shell of a handheld/console hybrid sounds enticing.
I literally learned about this a few days back when my old ass gaming rig finally gives up the ghost I'll have to try this thing
If this was a thing back when I started uni I probably would have got one instead of my shitty old laptop and just plugged it into a monitor for doing work. Doesn't interest me as much now I have a desktop and don't travel back and forth anymore but it's a very interesting product
I remember when consoles used to be put in a disc and go. Now you are just better off with a PC. I miss simple things.

Yatzee Crossaw said Half Life 3 could only come out when it could be revolutionary in any way.
He was right about that with Half Life Alyx,
And I think it would be the perfect commercial bait for the Gabe Boy,
As well as showing of all the new buttons.
7:40 This! 100% this! The console manufacturers have been subtracting features and conveniences from us since Gen 8. But people just keep on buying them up. It drives me crazy.
One of the best videos I’ve seen on the topic wow
Sounds like a real portable PC instead of a gaming laptop.
Random kid: "Will you release games on console?"
GabeN: "Well no, but actually yes"
It’s going to be supported for about a year then it’s going to get radio silence
It reminds me of what the Nvidia shield wanted to be
THEY WILL POSSIBLY INTIGRATE THIS INTO VR SOMEHOW

If they nick name it "The Gabe Boy" and they have HL3 on it as an exclusive. Like it only runs on that thing I'd bet they'd struck gold in sales or at least become such a big meme that they won't need to invest in marketing.
You joke but remember Half-Life Alyx is VR exclusive.
Steamdeck success will probably mean that more devs will start giving a shit about PC ports.
half life 3 exclusive to steam os might just break the internet lmao

I'm just glad it has a lot of ram, also it's kind of weird that they first said the storage wasn't ugradeable but later said it does have an m.2 slot, were they afraid of being criticized?
It's because the SSD that fit in the slot aren't widely consumer available and they recommend against upgrading it yourself.

Yes i know most of the nintendopeople wont bother with the yuzus and the emulators but still you can kind of play switch on it
Of course they bother and even pay for it... wasn't a few months ago a controversy because Nintendo was using known emulators (or roms, I didn't care) as official nostalgia money grabbers?

This is super neat though
Most of my gaming is done handheld with my Vita, I use an 07 iMac with an HDD still so even using this docked as a PC would be an upgrade
I'm just happy that the difference between PC and console isn't so massive anymore. I don't know enough about PC gaming, but I find it really dumb there aren't any really good pre built options.

It was so weird hear "the old steam machine" Holy shit we are old
I just want one of these so I can play my steam games on the go
Would be great to know how companies do their market research, because some things just seem like a bad idea from the outset
The real reason Microsoft should be shaking in their boots is that Valve is trying to take Windows out of the equation for gaming.
Uhhh WTF are you talking about the Steam Deck can install Windows lol.
Even the latest next gen gaming laptops of today will cost over $1000 dollars, so I like Steam's vision, it's a lot more revolutionary than you think.
lmao he says "plug in a controller" then proceeds to show my exact controller i use on my pc
Nintendo first party carrying consoles sales momentum is a myth.
Can't wait to go out of home with my Deck in hand and yell "look how big is my Deck!"
If not for the shortage, you could actually build a 1080p 60fps minimum pc for the price of the Steam Deck.
I've been waiting for the Whimsu steam deck video
"Yes my hot take is a $3,000 pc is going to run better than your PS5" Clever, lol. Ha! I wish my shit only cost $3,000. With this generations 3090 water cooling is pretty much a must if you wish to get your money's worth out of the card, or at least game for more than half an hour.
I hate that I bought a switch like a year ago maybe 2 at this point and they just added BLUETOOTH like I still remember at one point literally holding my switch lite and googling how to connect my earbuds only to find out I couldn't like wtf and now after 3 fucking years or so they're just like oh yea here's Bluetooth like whattttt the fuckkkkkk
Assuming this thing lives up to the promise of playing most, if not all, modern games decently, I see it as a very enticing choice of an upgrade instead of spending probably twice as much or more on a new rig.
the last sentance scares me
I just want to know how good can it handle high end games. Obviously Cyberpunk won't be playable. I have a feeling games from the early 2010s will be its limit.
Oh god its gonna fucking melt trying to run my 2000+ custom asset C:S Savefile😅
The Deck has 2 teraflops, which is more than what the ps4/xbox one has. So, yeah, maybe it will run at 30 fps at 720p, which is completely fine on that screen.

Hey Tyler from Whimsuhub. How do you like your steamdeck now that you have it?
If games were actually made games specifically for this then it would be good
Imagine how awesome it would be to have portable pc vr though
Looking how relatively easy is emulating a Switch on PC and if the Gabe Boy has enough power and freedom in its system, then Nintendo would be going to the courts before you can say "it's a me, Mario"... specially if modern systems are really x86-x64 architectures with some modifications (a good response of why porting games got more efficient in recent years).

I feel like it’s been much the same paradigm for so long with gaming, and we’re about to see some massive shifts in the near future. Will it be cloud streaming with xcloud/stadia/etc? Massive PC libraries viable on consoles? The “old” guard consoles with the new gen xbox/ps5? Will Nintendo’s IPs circumvent all of that again? Or maybe there’s enough room in the market now for all of that to thrive at once? Can’t say for sure, but it feels like a storm’s a-comin’.
Worth the weight.
I do really hope this does really well, PC's are way too expensive for me to justify getting one, so if this is something that keeps getting improved on and the price stays pretty low compared to how much a compairable pc would cost id be happy
