  • Pregnancy is quite a feat. The embryo manages to develop, get food, and get rid of their waste, all while staying under the radar of their parent’s immune system.

    A funny analogy I just realized works: The reproductive system is basically a freeloader in the apartment of your body. They don't pay rent (help you survive) and don't work, but everyone else has to pay for their groceries. Every month the reproductive system gets their room ready for a new roommate, witch the other systems don't want because a fetus also won't pay rent and will make a massive mess and eat everyone's food. If the roommate doesn't show up, the reproductive system throws a fit, tears off the wallpaper from their room and makes everyone miserable. If the roommate does show up, they have to barricade themself in the reproductive system's room or else the immune system will kick them out. The fetus also bribes the brain, who changes everyone's quotas and jobs to make sure the fetus is fed.

      The Absolute Madman Oh shut your tiresome whining. If people want kids they will have kids, if people don't want to have kids they wont have any. And pregnancy is risky. There is no guarantee that the child will be healthy and able to care for itself one day. So leave people alone.

    • @thatboringone7851
      @thatboringone7851 6 років тому +34

      +The Absolute Madman
      Supporting a parent isn't a matter of being raised properly, it's something a kid may or may not do depending on whether or not the parents need help, how they treated the child or those around them, whether or not the child has the resources to help their parents, etc. If you're counting on a baby being an investment rather than a person, that they have to help you once you're older no matter what you do, or what you or they have, that's pretty damn awful.
      Aside from that, though, I'm pretty sure OP wasn't suggesting children are freeloaders. They were describing bodies, not babies.

    • @leaanna9094
      @leaanna9094 6 років тому +1

      they were already in the mothers body in the form of an egg, there is a hole in your analogy. Plus the fetus does not eat all the food, it shares it.

    I've said that mammals' reporductive system in general is like a symbiotic/ parasitic relationship. Depending on how the body reacts to the pregnancy. The two I had with my kids was totally symbiotic (like my asthma symptoms went away during the whole pregnancy!)

      My son's refusal to be born caused me to have a cesarean. After he was out the surgeon said, "Your appendix looks _funny."_ Turns out I had a malignant tumor in my appendix! The surgeon accidentally got it all _by TWO cells_ between the excision and the first malignant cell! I never had to have another surgery for that, never had to have chemo or radiation, and it's 33 years later (almost) and I'm FINE!!! That tumor would NEVER have been found by any routine exam or test. My son saved my life, FOR REAL, on the day he was born!

      Let me point out that, if you're considering entering a state of perpetual pregnancy to avoid having asthma symptoms, it might be detrimental to your body in the long run.
      But you probably already know that ;)

    • @ArtGeekDesign
      @ArtGeekDesign 6 років тому +15

      BertyFromDK Uh. I'm not entirely sure where you got that idea. But, I would never consider that. I only had two, out of four, due to other complications. Also, I'm way past my "breeding prime". I merely stated this to highlight why I thought such a way.
      However, your response got me thinking. Not everyone would "get" it, that perpetual pregnancy is bad for the overall biology. So, on that note (to others that read my first statement), remember that there are other changes that effect you long term too. For good AND ill.

    honestly the first piece of media i ever see that doesn't explain pregnancy as some wonderful, mystical, magical thing. content like this (factful and honest) is essential in understanding issues with abortion, even if you don't agree with them, because it's presented as a (yes) natural process but also as a complex one. thank you, scishow.

      oh yes, i can't deny for people who experience it it's life-changing, but there is something i feel is wrong about teaching magic to everyone from a young age and creating pressure about how they have to feel about it. different people have different experiences and personally i think the best way to ensure everyone acts according to what they want and to what their rights allow and not to meet expectations is to teach them objectively, with the truth. present them with the wonders as well as the risks. so that when someone makes the choice to start a family, they're well educated about their choice.

    I read a really great article about how pregnancy is really kind of like a battle between the mother and fetus. Some people theorize that we have menstruation cycles because pregnancy is so taxing on the body that we can't afford to host a weak baby. If the fetus doesn't excrete enough hormones and take enough resources, it gets expelled.

      It's hostile to sperms too as they have 50% of the DNA of a normal cell. Immune cells are trained to detect stranges proteins in the membrane of the cell, and those proteins are a product of the information of the DNA, so if the cell has a strange DNA (cancer cell, sperm, embrio, cell infected with a virus) it will express proteins that are strange to the inmmune cell and get killed. That's why in the testicles sperms in development are surronded by other cells that protect them form the inmune system

    Yeah, I've heard about the foreign cells/immune problems theory before. It's certainly plausible with my family. My parents came from eight and nine sibling families, and my grandparents also came from large families. I was the last born of three in my family. All three of us and my parents have unique autoimmune diseases. Given that autoimmune diseases tend to run in families, it makes sense that there'd be something heritable about it, but it's clearly more complicated than the prevalence of certain genes, since the diagnoses are so different. It's also very telling that the majority of people with autoimmune disease are female, which lends credence to the fact that pregnancy might be involved.

I do not want to have children or fit that narrative. I would rather we all suffer for not contributing to the over glorified 9 billion inhabitant goal people who defend our population like to state or nobody cares who is and is not having children. Men should "use their pair" and have more pressure to have kids if we are trying to even out the playing field. Instead of the unjustified "use you womb" by old timey folk. Again... *9 billion*

  • @CrankyPantss

    That was very good. Thanks Olivia. Often during childbirth, the placenta tears and the baby's blood will mingle with the mother's. If the mother has a specific blood type, (O neg, A neg, B neg, or AB neg) and the baby has a specific blood type that is different from the mother (O, A, B or AB positive), she will develop antibodies against that blood type, (the positive part). That baby will be out, so it won't effect them. Any subsequent pregnancies after that, though, can be trouble. If any of those later babies have that same blood type as the first baby, the mom is already ready with antibodies and will attack it. There's a way to get around that, though. If, when they find out the baby has that specific blood type (any positive type), right after the baby is delivered, they are ready and can inject a bunch of the pre-made antibodies into the mom. Those pre-made antibodies neutralize the baby's blood so the mom's immune system doesn't get alerted to the problem and therefore doesn't have to make antibodies of her own...problem solved.

Yeah, that was a super fun week and a few days of panicked Googling.
    Relaxin was real fun to deal with too. I started getting the loose joint symptoms when I was like... 4 months along. And I worked, in retail, until 10 hours before I went into labor (5 days before she was due). Working retail sucks because people yell at you if you can't move fast enough, or have to sit down a lot. I noticed that people with two(see multiple) sons(myself included), the younger is often taller, but that part about leaving cells behind almost like cache (or browser cookies) would allow a uterus to sample dna and "remember" the list of previous kids and perhaps add some convoluted evolutionary mechanism to differentiate the second, often opting for bigger.

    The amniotic sac, not a fluid the amniotic fluid is fluid. The amniotic cavity/sac is just the cavity surrounded by the amnion. The amnion secretes the fluid for the foetus to float in isolating it from gravity and protecting it from extreme changes in temperature or extreme temp (all hail high specific heat capacity of water due to hydrogen bonds caused by waters polar nature!!!). It also helps it with the foetus with muscle development and swallowing reflex

    A human growing inside another human is an inherently strange concept, yet it's just how it is. The fact that it takes two people to make one is strange too. Reality is stranger than fiction.

      I always imagine it would be weird to try to explain that to an alien race who procreate differently.
      "It grows? INSIDE of you? And you have an organ specifically for housing that from which is leeches off of your bloodstream? And only a tiny percentage is ever born and that process causes all kinds of permanent damage up to death reguarly? And your newborns are all premature because otherwise you would die? wtf?!? How are you not distinct?"

    YOU CAN DONATE YOUR PLACENTA TO SCIENCE AND YOUR CHORD TO SICK BABIES. my personal chord went to stem cell research and my sons went to cancer research for babies.

    0:10 "We usually make pregnancy sound like a wonderful 9 month period of parental bliss." Who? When? Anyone in the history of ever? This is the first time I've even heard of someone advancing the notion that people advance that notion. Maybe virgin Nun teaching in catholic school might have that much of a distorted view of reality. But outside of something like that I don't think that's how it's made out to be at all.

      everyone, who wants grandchildren ,lol.
      it's horrible actually. for everyone involved.
      and it's not that the horribleness stops there.
      people get indoctrinated into that sick little half-immortality fetish left and right. exactly by using words like "wonderful" as a positive descriptor.

    • @The1Helleri
      @The1Helleri 6 років тому +1

      I can see it as something a parent tells their offspring later when they are in danger of missing that window. But by then the person should know better. Should have seen enough people go through it to know that it isn't all that wonderful. I mean unless a person grows up completely sheltered how could interaction with the world not cause that lie to fall apart rapidly?

      Yeah I've never heard anyone say to me that pregnancy is absolute bliss. My mum was very honest to me about her experience - how being pregnant made her exhausted and nauseous etc.

      @@pervaction4658 Just making sure i understand your point - are you saying people get brainwashed into having children?

    • @pervaction4658
      @pervaction4658 4 роки тому

      @@calypsoc3630 at least that's what my perception throughout my life was. Parents, Friends etc acted like it was not even a question by phrasing it this way:
      "WHEN are you starting a family?"
      But i couldn't help but to translate that in my head into : "When are you gonna gamble with someone else's wellfare?"
      "Why do you care about your imaginary child too much to put it under the stress and risk?"
      "Why don't you, a 20 year old, NOT decide for someone to grow to 80 years old?"
      I can't even imagine, what female children have to endure brainwash-wise.
      And yes. Most 20 year olds are children. Philosophically. So are most 80 year olds.
      Sorry, but they not only retain but presuppose their childish "imposition fetish" as a "how it should be" when it's only a weird "how it unfortunately is"

    As someone pregnant now, I seriously wish I would have watched this before I got so. Wouldn’t have changed my mind but maybe I would have been better prepared for how awful it’s been! No one warns you!

      Oh wait, did you mean biologically. Yep, that too.

      Truth. Methotrexate is a chemotherapeutic medication. It is also used as an abortificant to treat ectopic pregnancy or terminate an early pregnancy.
