- With the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS online servers shutting down, we decided to celebrate the very end of Splatoon 1, which would no longer be playable. Turns out the Splatoon servers could hold on for a little longer than we anticipated...

i love how instead of "communication error" it says "callie and marie have some news! lets go see them at the studio live!" what happened to nintendos happiness
I think that's meant to be the announcement of the map rotation. I never played Splatoon 1, so I only know so much about it, but I think the communication error is the same in all 3 games.

yeah that isnt a comm error, in splat3 the equivalent is the "multiplayer maps and modes have changed" popup

Old Splatoon 1 servers may have passed away, but at least we are able to carry on its spirit via Pretendo. No hacking required too.
(Downside is you will have to start completely over. You need to homebrew your Wii U if you want to transfer your save file)

Yeah I kinda figured that with pretendo. Even monster hunter 3 ultimate will have you restart from the beginning…. Which no one wants to do.
So it’s better to move on from the Wii U and 3DS anyway.
i did play in its final moments. The last couple of battles were mostly squid parties, and I could not be happier to realize how many people have come together to have a jolly good time during its countdown.

The sadness I felt knowing I didn't get to play s1's final hours because of work was IMMENSE. Sitting in the break room reminiscing on it was all I could do. Im glad you got the chance to play at the end! Cheers s1, we'll miss you dearly 💕.
Maybe Nintendo will be the goat and re-release it on a later console but i guess we'll never know 😅

I remember never having Splatoon 1, but really, really, wanting it after seeing it in the ads on TV. A shame I never got to play it.

Forgetting that any game you played will mean having to restart all over again 💀 it’s even worse for longer games like monster hunter, where people have to dive in and play hundreds and hundreds of hours.
I believe there's actually a software called SaveMii than can backup your Nintendo Network save data and copy it to your Pretendo Network ID account, so you don't have to start from scratch!

I had no idea when the servers were shutting down, and when I found out, it was already after it happened. I totally would've played had I known.

Rip splatoon, ive been playing since i was a tiny child, my wii had to get fixed for fan issues so i didn't enjoy the last legitimate moments but with pretendo i hop on to turf wars to get the years i missed out on.

It is truly insane how a time span of just under ten years can feel like an entirely different life time. It's also really crazy how the first Splatoon was up and running for 9 years after two sequels came out. Watching JayMoji just jump around in squid form with his team and the other team too is just the best way to sum up Splatoon 1... what a way to go. And remember everyone, JayMoji is good at this game.

if there's one thing i know about games going offline, it's that they never just completely go offline at the time they say they do. usually it's like an hour or so later like with spellbreak last year.
I remember getting this game for Christmas when I was 7 and I didn’t like it at all at first. I even side eyed my dad for playing, but when I played on my own I instantly became obsessed for years to come
I never got to play the game, but I can still see how significant it is for so many people, including myself.

fully modded my wii u just for this single game, I literally had its UI burned into my gamepad screen, found the amiibo's and everything.

I never got to play Splatoon 1. I didnt have a Wii U. I did keep track of the game, though. For some reason, I was convinced that it would be ported to 3ds like Mario Maker. When I got my Switch for Christmas 2017, the first game I bought was Splatoon 2, and I knew immediately that i made the right choice. These games are something special.

Hey Jay, I've been watching your videos since the "I hate chargers" video all those years ago. It's very strange to see the end of this game which dominated my days of middle school. It feels so surreal! It's been super cool to see your growth over the years! I'm super sad to see splatoon 1 go, really sad, actually. But thank you for being the person to really get me hooked on splatoon. And here's to so many more years of this awesome, terrible game franchise!

I don’t have a Wii U or 3DS, but rest in peace, Splatoon servers and every other server that was on the Wii U or 3DS.
This game is legendary and you can't tell me otherwise. It's a shame to see both the WII U and 3DS online interaction disconnect after so long, but with some reverse engineering I'm sure players can keep up the activity of the games.
