  • As a biomedical scientist, Dr. Doug Mahoney daily investigates how to learn from evolution to treat profound health issues. Using this as a foundation, he explores the provocative question of whether similar principles can be applied to solving bigger global problems. Dr. Mahoney is a translational scientist at Cumming School of Medicine in the University of Calgary with 20+ years of experience studying human health and disease.
Over the past 15 years, his research has made important contributions to the development of numerous cancer immunotherapies that have been commercialized and/or tested in human clinical trials. Currently his lab is focused on engineering “designer cells and viruses” to treat various forms of cancer in children, adolescents, and adults.
Dr. Mahoney is the founder and Scientific Director of a research initiative called ACTION (Alberta Cellular Therapy and Immune Oncology), which seeks to develop innovative next generation engineered immune cell therapies and deliver them to cancer patients in Alberta and beyond.
Outside the lab, Doug spends his time with his wife and three children, mostly enjoying the Alberta/BC wilderness. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Yes. The answer lies within us. Each of us. And all of us. All of life. Over the eons. And now. Including the long and short evolution of all our best ideas and informative memes.

I enjoyed learning a bit about immunotherapy. I see what you mean about "injecting" some good cells into the bad cells into our world as it is today. I wish it were as simple as that. If only.....then we could eradicate what was causing such poison that is destroying our beautiful world/body

Applying evolutionary mechanisms to cultural organisms is not going to be democratic, and who gets to decide what characteristics are to be selected and de-selected? In a sense, we are contra-evolutionary if we protect the minority and advocate for those that are weaker. I am not going to get into an argument over eugenics but I just wanted to point out that evolution is not kind, merciful or moral, and I question any application of it to the human equation.

Evolution is a fact and the theory of evolution is verified and the basis of modern biology, medicine, agriculture, conservation, etc. scientific theories are verified and working frameworks that work to reliably predict/describe things, and because they currently work to predict/describe things this will always hold true no matter how far science progresses, we just might discover things outside of them that they cannot describe/predict. For example, newton’s understanding of the universe works well to predict most things unless we go to the atomic or subatomic level, or approach the speed of light. It works elsewhere though with insane reliability. If god exists evolution still happened.

If you disagree with evolution then you’ve not studied it enough. On what basis do you reject it? Want me to explain it to you in simple terms and provide ways its applied to the real world and evidence supporting it?
