  • I was curious to see if it was possible to ride mountainbike trails on my new gravel bike so I took it on one of my favourite MTB loops.

    best part when gravel bike gets sketchy on the singletrack but you get away with it, so much fun :D and then the ride home on road is much quicker and less effort than on a regular mtb

    I don't even have a proper gravel bike, but tried this with a hybrid road bike and it was SO MUCH FUN. Made the trails by my house that I had gotten tired of brand new. Definitely investing in switching the tires, handlebars and pedals and trying some more!

    LOVE my Hatchet on Green and (flowy) Blue local trails. Really changed my mind on what a rigid bike is capable of. I bought it wanting a more relaxed road bike to soak up miles and grind compared to many of the super aggressive road bikes we're seeing.

    I found the limiting factor is the bottom bracket/chainring which don t have enough clearance when going down bigger rocks or wood bits.
    But, doesn’t matter much if you push 10-50m over a 40k mtb ride

    We used to race MTB's on tires not much bigger than Gravel tires. Full ridged. No disc brakes. Yes you can ride any bike if you can ride.

    My cannondale topstone will be coming in in a few months, and ima put zipp xplr 101 in 27.5s with 2.1' tires and cush core inserts as well a Lauf fork and ride some of this!
    then put the stock 700c's with 30 mm tires back on and ride endurance road!

    There are wide dropbars 500 or even 600mm wide + shorter stem makes you able to ride in hoods and shift weight back, so you don't feel like about to roll over the front.

    As a newbie graveler coming from mtb I'm rediscovering old feelings from my Trek 990, full rigid, cromoly frame and fork. And I love it. I'm not too comfy on the drops of my wcs venturemax and I'm searching for a more "traditional" shaped dropbar. Any recommendation?
    Anyway, I try to ride MTB trails always I can with my new gravel bike... really fun!!

    On the gravel bike i would have either got off and walked or fallen off on many of those rougher sections, but the problem is soon solved, i just avoid that stuff and enjoy the forest and gravel roads. on a load of minor rural tarmac roads, the gravel bike is the best option. i only use my light road bike when riding with others and i i have to hang on to their wheels.

    • @greg_callaghan
      @greg_callaghan  3 роки тому +1

      I tried both but I feel more comfortable in the drops. On the hoods it feels like my weight is too far in front of the front wheel. I’ve found it easier to compensate being a bit lower than further forward.
