@@MAT20228 well, Reagan didn't really work out since she discovered that her father raised her memories and her father even alternated her geans when she was still inside her mother. For person, like Reagan's father, you always have to have a plan or your plan or a backup plan for your and other backup plan you need to take precaution. If Reagan was his only back up plan and then he's putting all his eggs into one basket, he's risking it all. I'm not even gonna be surprised if he has another family, you know just in case, he's, an inventor, he might as well had built a robot that would think exactly like him that would act like him, to raise another child one that's smart if not smarter than Reagan.

I think the worst part about rand’s whole memory altering reveal is that we the audience don’t know exactly how many times he did this Reagan after the initial Orion erasure. For we know rand could be the reason Reagan hasn’t had a steady relationship since her early teens.

When memory erasure and editing enter the picture... that's a heavy precedent which threatens the validity of theoretically everything. She'll need to dive into her memories when possible. Even if we can take Rand's statement about the risks at face value (and that's a big IF), she needs to know. She could have decades of blind spots from memory edits.

    • @SalinaMoonfall
      @SalinaMoonfall 3 роки тому +295

Defiantly could be a case of he's screwed with her mind on more than one occasion, I theorize he's pulled the memory alteration on her whenever he's almost lost control of her...hence why she only just now at the end of the season sought to her sever her ties with him, because all the other times she tried or was doing something that would end with him on the curb he literally "changed her mind". Why else would she still have him living with her in her apartment when he is a hyper toxic influence on her life, and why he didn't seem remotely worried about the possibility of her kicking him out. He's been gaslighting her with memory alterations since she was a kid clearly, and why she sometimes displays instability (not just from her toxic upbringing), if her head has been messed with repeatedly of course she isn't stable anymore.

Something I would like to note is that when Reagan is forced to hug, she defaults to creating robotic arms. Since the only way she was ever hugged as a child was Bear-o's robotic arms, she doesn't know how to give hugs any other way.
If Reagan were to have a child, would she be able to hug them? If she again resorted to mechanical means to, the child would turn out like Reagan did, and the cycle would peurpetuate.
TL;DR: Both Rand and Reagan using machines to hug is an excellent metaphor for the inter-generational effects of neglect.

    • @designerhearts
      @designerhearts 3 роки тому +78

I think what is also interesting about the concept is that Reagan still has a choice if she were to have a kid- but both still carry weight of her own trauma. To learn to hug even if its pushing outside of her comfort where she could improve more organically or continue to be robotic, create a robot to do it for her like her father did, or to avoid it so that mistakes can’t be made. It’s not clean cut and it just references the damages. Reagan is not bad for struggle, and her pain isn’t good- but she can made the choices and build the strength to work beyond what has hurt her.
This will still affect her, but its doesnt need to own her.

I feel like Rand as a character is a direct commentary on Rick from Rick and Morty. That show glamorizes Rick as a genius: powerful, but self-destructive. Even when he's being horrible, there's an alluring charm to his meanness and quips. But I think Inside Job fights that perception! Unlike Morty, Reagan has her own goal, a strong inner drive, and a strong resolve, which she uses to push bask against Rand. The focus on the show from Reagan's perspective gets the audience on her side, and really highlights how much damage is done by someone using you for their own ends.

Many say Rick is worse than Rand, I disagree for this reason:
Rick has changed, he may still be an a-hole, but he at least tries to rebuild or compensate for his bad parenting, he's still awful, but at least he tries to be better, on his own way.
Rand doesn't change, I know it's only been one season, but still, he doesn't show any sign of remorse, and the only times he does, is because he fears losing control, wether is over his daughter, or his already lost marriage.
I know Rick has 5 seasons of character development as an advantage over Rand, however, when we look back to season 1, we can actually see he does have some remorse, genuine remorse.

For him to have a redemption arc he need to "fix" his relationship with her. I don't mean he need to be her father again but as a character to let her be, to understand the mistakes he made and to help someone else or her at a safe distance. Even if she seemed happy that he left at least make him leave definitely her life in a less brutal way. Even if he was abusive, a so sudden disappearing can damage her. @@magblogs My take on toxic parents is that if they finally see how they've fucked up and and understand how their actions, even if the intentions are good, are ultimately bad or abusive. They can change, work to better themselves, not repeat the same mistakes, etc. But in the end it's up to their child/who ever they hurt to forgive them.
If Rand asks for forgiveness just to make himself feel better, it probably means he doesn't get what he did wrong or he doesn't really care about Raegan's feelings. She doesn't have to forgive him, but if she does that's up to her. The difficult thing about abuse by your parents is that sometimes, no matter how much they fucked up and hurt you, they're still your parents. And sometimes holding onto the hate just hurts the child more in the end because of the emotional conflict. Their relationship will never be great, but if it makes them (the victim) feel better then it's up to them whether or not to forgive their parents.

While sometimes necessary, the reality of not every home being perfect is seldom depicted in media, as the society attempts to forge beliefs about family being a sacred thing, that can do no wrong and needs always be forgiven. Even purposefully dysfunctional cartoon families like Simposons or Family Guy are always shown with redeeming features that pull everyone together, but in reality that's unlikely to happen. People are either toxic or accommodating, and will rarely switch their personality around.

When I think of Reagans mother and how her narcissim affected Reagan. I realize that the she didn't explore so much of Reagan and Tomikos relationship. It didn't give us a deep dive into their history but it showed us a little about their dynamics.
But a friend of mine hypothesized that her Narcissim could have stemmed from Rands obsession with his work at Cognito Inc.
It could be that he wasn't given her enough attention and she went into a self love that stretched its way into narcissism. Tomiko says she loves herself but perhaps she says and does what she does to get Rands attention to let him know she is present. Not sure if this is the case but it's could be a possibility. 🤔
It would then mean that Rand's behavior had a greater impact than we realized. 😐

We don't know much about Rand's since it's been only one season but it seems that his everything thing he did to Reagan was for his own ego. But after season 5 it seems like C137Rick not providing the emotional connection for the versions of his daughter seems more as a defense mechanism from his trauma, C137 Rick loved his wife and original daughter enough to abandon being the smartest man in the universe and thats what got them killed. When watching this, I felt so horrible for her. She *was* normal, happy, and had friends. Her dad ruined that for her by taking it all away.
And just as she starts to make new friends and be happy again, in comes her dad to try to ruin it again.
It reminds me of my own dad. I was often told by lot of my friends growing up that my dad scared them. That was understandable. He was tall, often fairly grumpy, and was a brilliant frequent liar. He could go from a good father, watching movies durring a storm with his kid to calm them down, to a demon that wanted nothing more then express his rage. Infact, I had to call the cops on him a few times when I was younger. He isn't around anymore so I'm glad I don't have to deal with the emotional and physical abuse but I miss the good side of him. The side that would make marshmallows on the stove or take me to the movies. The dad that would collect my art growing up and keep it in his apartment. (He had a job that would make him leave and come home at random hours so he had one so he could leave quick.) I miss the dad that would let me sleep in the back of his truck durring the summer so I could see the stars. That's the dad I miss.
She probably misses the good, although EXTREMELY SMALL, version of her dad too. The abuse, manipulation, and neglect however will definitely overlap what she misses.
I hope in the next part she is able to make more friends and genuinely be happy even though her toxic ass dad is now boss

It's fairly common that the emotionally immature have a hard time recalling the sources of their behavioral issues, they never really took the time to process those thoughts and end up suppressing them assuming there's nothing to gain from processing them.
I feel there's alot about Reagan's character I can relate with. My father decided to bring me into the world as a laborer for the family farm first and a son second. I wasn't allowed much socializing outside of school instead having a closer bond with my dog whom I was expected to put down myself when I was 18. Most of my middle and highschool experience was as a floater, people knew of me but didn't take the time to understand anything on a personal level. I hadn't been taught proper hygiene through all of my teenage years and just assumed a shower was enough, and it obviously wasn't. My first run at college I had no idea how to talk to anyone, I kept falling asleep in my classes because I'd had that lingering sentiment from my dad that I was a laborer and would end up working 12 hour shifts thinking that's what i should prioritize, life felt pretty meaningless then because that's all my days were filled with. It wasn't until I got promoted and really got to know my boss that things started to turn around, the guy was a really positive male role model where my dad failed, but he still could only do so much the rest is kinda on me, I'm still figuring out who I am and what I've been doing wrong and alot of times it is pretty difficult since I don't remember why it's like that, I still have alot to process through.

The show really hit the nail on the head, never before could I relate to a character this much. Usually in media there's only one toxic parent and the other is relatively stable enough to raise the child. They never talk about the case where both parents are awful and when they do, it's almost always the effects on a son, never on a daughter. I have an abusive father and narcissistic mother much like Reagan. The most painful part when people praise your parents for your education when you pretty raised yourself and the only thing they ever did was dismiss, manipulate and berate you while taking credit for your success. Too real

In the season 1 finale it’s revealed that Reagan’s dad erased the memories of his daughter‘s best friend from his daughters brain. Because of this Reagan grew up not having any friends and not remembering her best friend. This is one of the few TV shows that has ever made me cry. And it probably wasn’t even intended to be that emotional. I have had so many friends just stop talking to me. They just ghost me out of nowhere with no warning. So many of my friends have just left me. I still have a few really good friends but it still hurts

What probably pissed me off the most was how Rand didn''t even show the slightest hint of remorse
Sometimes, when we see a character do this, like 'I had to do this' or 'im sorry' to show us that, despite doing what they did, they still felt bad for doing it.
Meanwhile Rand does all of this without a care in the world while drinking soda, like this is all just a game to him.

Fun fact: TV Tropes called Rand a “Corrupted Character Copy” of Rick Sanchez from Rick and Morty. This is because Rick has lines that he won’t cross, possesses a genuine love for his daughter, and despite partaking in many vices in addition to being a terrible guardian, he hates himself for all of that. Rand, well… he’s an unrepentant slimeball, who sees his relatives as pawns to get what he wants.

I have to add that, with the second season, we see why Reagan wants to run Cognito: She wants to make the world a better place. Although she was definitely set up to be in Cognito, being in charge of it was never specifically wired into her. Reagan, in her own right, is ambitious, hardworking, and highly intelligent. Although we are all products of our pasts, Reagan's desire for sovreignity was her own, not Rand's. Especially since Rand never wanted her to be in charge instead of him.

I was already amazed by the portrayal of trauma in Shera but then this gem came out and I'm hooked! It's even better because the characters are modern day humans in a modern day society making it easier to relate to and understand for people who haven't experienced that sort of thing and easier to recognize for people who have. I know that they were people who didn't catch on to it in Shera because "Stuff like that happens all the time in fantasy! Isn't it just for dramatic effect?" The difference isn't it happening its how it's in how the trauma, traumatizing Event, harmful behavior etc.. is portrayed. Is it played of as a joke (like say in Dragon ball) or is it framed as important or terrifying/wrong. Is the focus directed towards it? Is it tied in to the characters development, relationships and personality/behavior? Shera did well but as an adult show that can be as krass as it wants Inside job did better in getting across how terrible abuse can mess you up.

When I found this video and got to minute three I KNEW I had to watch this show. And so I did. Thank you for getting me into a more character-driven animated show, though I wish they had given Andre, Myc and Gleen more screentime/character development. They felt a bit one-dimensional, not that it was bad, their personalities blended well with the show, just that I would've loved to see Glenn actually show signs of hearing others more, Andre finding a way to use his science knowledge for something other than drugs/see his inventions come more into play, and give us a bit more insight on what Myc actually is. When I first started watching the show I thought we would have an episode where they'd go to the center of the earth and give Myc some backstory.

I really enjoyed that Rand starts as a comedically bad father like in many other shows, but then they fully commit to making him the villain he really is, and is pretty cool how the show never does the point of proving the opposite, even if some lines are funny like " im proud of myself for having you" is never shown once he cares or loves his daughter
Also i feel like her mom is getting more in the second season, despite her being a horrible narcisist and terrible mom, she does show a degree of care or atleast needness for Reagan thats Rand doesnt show , she entrusts her the wedding and Reagan understand her in the end where she marries herself, wouldnt be surprised if she was always terrible but Rand was the one who upper her horribliness by 11 , theres a distinct lack of her in all of Reagan memories except for the therapy session
