I disagree Tara...or respectfully disagree I should say. Yes, racism and false expectations of Black people still occur. But how will we ever turn the page unless folks get over that huge "chip". Sorry Tara, don't create a false sense of reality for her. It's not going to help her in any way. It'll only create more of a division between her and others if she's walking around with a chip like that. Trust me, nobody in there feels threatened. Her success in class will not cause others to fail unlike the real world where you have to compete for a limited number of positions. They do feel surprised to see someone like her in the class. If her skills are there, it'll be self evident when people work with her. No need to prove you're better than everyone because that'll just back fire.
Currently in this struggle right now as an SE major in my junior year. Everyone usually assumes that you don't know what you're doing and they are smarter than you. Even with my past internship, most of the people assumed that I didn't have much technical experience compared to the other interns smh...I'm happy I've come across this video because this field can be pretty discouraging for us black females but we'll make it through!
First of all, it's awesome that this is your chosen career field. I wanted to do something in the technical sciences, but I was discouraged from a variety of sources. We need more representation. Show them this is the norm!
Hi Nadia. I wish you well throughout your college career. My 1st degree was a Bachelor's in I.T. And C.S. Minor in 2010. I have been in the tech industry for 10 years and worked corporate for 6 of those 10 years. What I can tell you for certain is all of the hardships you have encountered as an undergrad are only fragments of what is to come when you decide to work for a corporate organization. This is a path less taken, and more than likely you will walk alone. You also need to know that, "the people who dont look like you" will not be the only ones giving you a hard time... you will also encounter other black women who will give you just as hard a time, for whatever reason they seem fit... being younger or more attractive in the industry, or what ultimately equates to "being seen as a threat". Though, if it is something you are passionate about, stick with it, you can accomplish anything.
Thank you so much for that, and that is something I will definitely keep in mind. Its so sad that some women make things harder for other women. This is not the first time I have heard women in the industry say that its just crazy, men support each other why can't we?
notJustNadia when you make friends or earn supporters based on your skill, definitely hold on to that and establish a line of loyalty. Youll need someone to look out for u, or give u survival tips. U might know all the answers to everything or figure things out technically, but don't ever forget that a good reputation or establishing loyalty/supporters (may be few) can get you anywhere in this world, even places where skill can not.
I'm amazed there was even more than one black girl. I remember checking out computer science at the time and there was ONE other (white) girl there. I also find it very inspiring that you don't change your appearance. I'm reconsidering studying computer science but terrified of being "too girly" and therefore being singled out/preyed on. I was majoring in Electronic Engineering but will be majoring in Computer Science, concentration in cyber security, I'm glad to see this video. Nervous but I know I can do it.
One incident of that (a "white" instructor marveling at a "black" girls curls) started a walk out at my school. Opportunistic activists turned what could've been resolved with dialogue and a simple apology into an 14 month long scorched earth anti-racism campaign. A couple of people lost their jobs.

Im a freshman in a university in Texas. As of now, my major is labled as general engineering. In my university we don't directly go to the major we want to because we go through this process called ETAM (entry to a major). the major I want to apply is computer science. I get constantly scared because i dont have a stable foundation in coding and I know it will be difficult because by my sophmore year I can finally take my first cpsc course. i always here that many people drop the classes and how there is very few girls, and in my university there is not a lot of minorities, so there is not much hispanic females.. it sometimes feels impossible because my friend tells me how I'm behind in computer science because i dont have any prior experience compared to those who had experience in their high schools. But, your story is inspiring. it was nice to hear that i am not alone (:
Hey love, don't let it scare you if other people are dropping thats them. I would strongly suggest you talk to some people in the program to find out what they learn, and then go ahead and learn the basics to prepare over the summer. Programming isnt too hard its just all practise and constantly doing it, you are literally speaking a language, so to get more fluent in it, you need to just practise. You got this don't let anyone tell you otherwise! It may have its tough times, but hang in there we will be those few awesome women paving the way for other women in this field!

Black ppl don’t ever be quiet when you have questions or the correct answers in the classroom cuz if you do they expect you to be quiet in the workplace meetings or conferences where you don’t move up in the ranks. Speak up!!!

You're such a motivation. I've dealt with the same issues as a science major. It really got to me at first to the point where I didn't even want to try anymore. I literally would register for courses and not try at all.Now I look back at it and think how foolish I was. I'm way less afraid now. No one should stop you from being educated. I've been considering CS and the greatest deterrent for me is the explicit condescension from my peers. I'm an INFP and I'm very sensitive to the energy of my environment. I flourish in environments where I'm treated as the competent person I am, and I struggle and underperform when I'm in work environments where I'm treated as inferior. Being aware of this allows me to work on this, fortunately. My hope is that I'll be able to push through. Thank you for sharing your story!
Use this as a motivation to be the best......the haters only hate when they can't be you.....true intelligence is in the black gene so you were meant to be on top you were meant to acknowledge you were meant to be seen by everyone......you were meant to be picked on by the teacher because they respect you notice they didn't acknowledge the white but the black because the enemy knows black people are intelligence and very focused once they put their mind to it. Keep doing your best your aim is to never get below 98% on anything you do...show them you know more than them laugh at them in the mind and offer to help them....trust me they will feel bad in their self.......i don't hate the hater i just try to help them see there is a better way and that we are all one.

But after obtaining my degree I wish to major in computer science and astronomy. im so SCARED to major in comouter science but a fire in me is burning to venture forth and pursue that major. I'm a professional web developer for the past 7 years, I have experienced this from all my employers. They will look at you like you don't belong and even try tactics to put you down as best they can. But its up to U to understand you are not the distorted image they have in their head of you. Do you always.
I understand your struggle. I have been there and done that. Don't listen to the negativity. You have to work 10 times as hard. But you can do it and come out 10 times as smarter. Stop talking to people who have negative things to say. You have to be confident. You can do it!

It's a shame this stuff is going on in 2017. However I think it's more a gender issue than race since all women can get discriminated. I'm thinking about switching my major to computer science. I wanted to do it after high school years ago and I remember my high school counselors downplayed me for wanting me to do it even my aunt once said "I should do something artistic". I like art but just for a hobby. I've been taking some coding classes online and I've been asked "what am I doing that coding crap for" by people. It still won't stop me from doing this major if I go that route

That’s exactly true! Let alone a STEM major when u go to a school full of people that don’t look like you it is overwhelming with so much in your mind as a black women 😭 I️ am thinking about an MIS major and I️ am scared of exactly that. What white and Asian people (all my classes are filed with 95%) don’t even understand isn’t not as easy as it seem why don’t they take a minutes to reflect! What if you were the only person who looks like you in a room full of class I️ WILL WAIT and that’s just to put the most little thing in perspective. But with all of that being said don’t sacrifice what you want for other work hard and whether they like it or not u will succeed! God help us all women’s in this experience.

Honestly, I enjoy being the only black woman in all my engineering classes. I feel as though, I am making a path for other black women. I feel empowered and never intimidated because I probably will most likely be the only black woman they see and it is my responsibility to show them and myself that I AM CAPABLE. My skin does not define my skills as an engineer; my work ethic does. I remember during a conference a woman came up to me and she said, "How does it feel being black in this department"; And to be quite frank, I didn't know how to answer mostly because I never felt alienated. The people at my university embrace me for who I am. LIke I said it's not a black or white thing. It's an ethics thing. I'm not going to like to someone because they're white. It's because theyre lazy, or have poor coding skills, or focus too much on the wrong things.
I'm really glad you feel that way because we are paving the way. Unfortunately, it's not really like that everywhere and I wish it was. Since posting this video many women have reached out to me about their experiences and people do think that way or just assume certain things based on absolutely no valid points. It's interesting that you say its an ethics thing, I really do see a lot of validity in that. I've always thought that it was human nature, we all trust what we know, but the more and more I think about it that not valid. Thanks for sharing, keep paving the way!

I got my bachelor's degree in computer science 2 years ago. I'm currently working on my master's. Unfortunately, it's more of a surprise to me when I'm not the only woman or black person in a class.
Homegirl, don't pay no mind to your so called classmates. Learn, study, and get all you possibly can out of your college experience. Please stay in that field. I am trying to convince my Black niece to major in computer science/ software development. Try not to focus too much on being the only Black female in the class. What I highly encourage you to do during your college years is to *network* with others. You should even join the computer club if they have one. Being a Black female in that field is a plus for you when it is all said and done at the end of the day, so use it to your advantage. If you don't understand any of your classes don't be afraid to ask for help or get a tutor, even if you have to pay. Also use the internet to help you understand the stuff in class that is giving you trouble. Use the internet to help you solve any of the computer science concepts that you may not be grasping right away. You will do it. I am not a female but I do understand the pressure you are feeling in that field of study you chose. Just stay focus, get help when you need it and you will be fine. I am an I.T. major at a small/medium sized university. I only know 3 blacks majoring in CS, 3 (including me) in I.T., and 1 in Computer Engineering. Never had more than 1 other black in any of my programming classes.
Here in the U.K.; it is "Black History -Month" (and I personally; prefer to call it = "" " And Empowerment -"!!"?? (I posted this before and seem/appear to have accidentally deleted it??). I am fairly new to UA-cam. (Oh yeah for females I love to say; "Fempowerment"; L.O.L.).
Hi I really want to do computer science but my parents tell me that I won’t get hired because I’m black and a female and it’s only for whites lol. I have cousins with a ca degree but haven’t gotten jobs yet in the past 3 years.
There is actually a lot that you can do with a Computer Science degree, currently there are not enough people graduating with CS degrees and companies are starting to find ways to decrease the pipeline by increasing their minority hiring. Please go ahead and pursue the degree you will find a job.

Why didn't you transfer from the university or at least bring the department's attention to the matter. Show them that you don't tolerate that kinda behavior. I would've done that if I were in your case.
Thats a good point. Uhm outside of these few horrible experiences I have had, I grew to really love my college and establish myself. There was also the fear of going through it all again at another college. The way I see it, its not that my school is the issue. Its the mentality that is held by people around, and by transferring I felt like I would still bump into the same thing. I don't know if that makes sense.
Wow you really had me thinking about your comment. Theres also other factors that play in like funding is also another big reason why I have not transferred. I have a really good scholarship here too. Thanks for asking that cause that really made me think and dig deep

Hi girl, it is time-consuming but you need to make time for yourself, that is what I battled with last semester. I had to take a step back and really put my me time on my schedule and make it a priority so you can find balance, people are doing it, why can't you.

I've been in computer science and mistreated by all the guys in the classes for as long as I could remember. It's been so hard. Yes I am embarrassingly a white female, but it is no easier for a white woman than an African American woman. I wished I was African American every morning and night because I didn't realize until watching this that it's just as harsh. I am 16 and and ready to give up my love of computers I have had since I was a child. It isn't a racial issue. It's gender in computer science. I don't know what it is but men can just be so cruel to women trying to expand into computer science and it's so disappointing. This has nothing to do with race, at least in New York. Men are mean to women in general in the field I do not understand why.
Hey girl, thanks for sharing that because that also offeres a new insight to me, I'm sorry that you also go through some of this stuff, this is still a very male dominated field and I guess its human nature for guys to clump together I don't know. But don't let it get in the way of your love for computers. The reason why I speak up on this is to get people to realise that we are also there and we matter as much, companies are starting to realise it too. Like the change wont happen anytime soon, but the least we can do is pave the way for little girls coming behind us. Its not always easy and not all men are like that. It gets better with time just know that you deserve to be there as much as anyone else, and that I think is the hardest thing to overcome.

Ndebele looks like a Nigerian last name so your people are known for being Nigerian, not Black/Black American per sé. Nigerians are the most educated people in the US system. Most Black Americans cannot handle CS except if it's Cisco/CompTIA-associated. There should be more Big Data Engineers, Data Scientists, & DevOps kind of Black American engineers. Nope. Devoid. Void.

Im a freshman in a university in Texas. As of now, my major is labled as general engineering. In my university we don't directly go to the major we want to because we go through this process called ETAM (entry to a major). the major I want to apply is computer science. I get constantly scared because i dont have a stable foundation in coding and I know it will be difficult because by my sophmore year I can finally take my first cpsc course. i always here that many people drop the classes and how there is very few girls, and in my university there is not a lot of minorities, so there is not much hispanic females.. it sometimes feels impossible because my friend tells me how I'm behind in computer science because i dont have any prior experience compared to those who had experience in their high schools. But, your story is inspiring. it was nice to hear that i am not alone (:
Hey love, don't let it scare you if other people are dropping thats them. I would strongly suggest you talk to some people in the program to find out what they learn, and then go ahead and learn the basics to prepare over the summer. Programming isnt too hard its just all practise and constantly doing it, you are literally speaking a language, so to get more fluent in it, you need to just practise. You got this don't let anyone tell you otherwise! It may have its tough times, but hang in there we will be those few awesome women paving the way for other women in this field!

I like this subject, Im a black man in the south 40 years old I preach the same thing. Blacks can do anything if they stick together and support each other. I just subscribbed.
Black ppl don’t ever be quiet when you have questions or the correct answers in the classroom cuz if you do they expect you to be quiet in the workplace meetings or conferences where you don’t move up in the ranks. Speak up!!!

You're such a motivation. I've dealt with the same issues as a science major. It really got to me at first to the point where I didn't even want to try anymore. I literally would register for courses and not try at all.Now I look back at it and think how foolish I was. I'm way less afraid now. No one should stop you from being educated. I've been considering CS and the greatest deterrent for me is the explicit condescension from my peers. I'm an INFP and I'm very sensitive to the energy of my environment. I flourish in environments where I'm treated as the competent person I am, and I struggle and underperform when I'm in work environments where I'm treated as inferior. Being aware of this allows me to work on this, fortunately. My hope is that I'll be able to push through. Thank you for sharing your story!

Use this as a motivation to be the best......the haters only hate when they can't be you.....true intelligence is in the black gene so you were meant to be on top you were meant to acknowledge you were meant to be seen by everyone......you were meant to be picked on by the teacher because they respect you notice they didn't acknowledge the white but the black because the enemy knows black people are intelligence and very focused once they put their mind to it.
Keep doing your best your aim is to never get below 98% on anything you do...show them you know more than them laugh at them in the mind and offer to help them....trust me they will feel bad in their self.......i don't hate the hater i just try to help them see there is a better way and that we are all one.

Hi! I'm a blaxk female, currently 18 and I'm a senior in a high school. I'm also a matriculated student in an engineering program do an associates degree in mechanical engineering. But after obtaining my degree I wish to major in computer science and astronomy. im so SCARED to major in comouter science but a fire in me is burning to venture forth and pursue that major. I fear discrimination, and not getting a job, in either feild, astronomy and computer science. But ik if i want it im gonna get it. Ur an inspiration to me

I'm a professional web developer for the past 7 years, I have experienced this from all my employers. They will look at you like you don't belong and even try tactics to put you down as best they can. But its up to U to understand you are not the distorted image they have in their head of you. Do you always.
I understand your struggle. I have been there and done that. Don't listen to the negativity. You have to work 10 times as hard. But you can do it and come out 10 times as smarter. Stop talking to people who have negative things to say. You have to be confident. You can do it!

Why do girls care so much about what other people think and being the only one doing something different?
It's a shame this stuff is going on in 2017. However I think it's more a gender issue than race since all women can get discriminated. I'm thinking about switching my major to computer science. I wanted to do it after high school years ago and I remember my high school counselors downplayed me for wanting me to do it even my aunt once said "I should do something artistic". I like art but just for a hobby. I've been taking some coding classes online and I've been asked "what am I doing that coding crap for" by people. It still won't stop me from doing this major if I go that route

Let alone a STEM major when u go to a school full of people that don’t look like you it is overwhelming with so much in your mind as a black women 😭 I️ am thinking about an MIS major and I️ am scared of exactly that. What white and Asian people (all my classes are filed with 95%) don’t even understand isn’t not as easy as it seem why don’t they take a minutes to reflect! What if you were the only person who looks like you in a room full of class I️ WILL WAIT and that’s just to put the most little thing in perspective. But with all of that being said don’t sacrifice what you want for other work hard and whether they like it or not u will succeed! God help us all women’s in this experience.

Honestly, I enjoy being the only black woman in all my engineering classes. I feel as though, I am making a path for other black women. I feel empowered and never intimidated because I probably will most likely be the only black woman they see and it is my responsibility to show them and myself that I AM CAPABLE. My skin does not define my skills as an engineer; my work ethic does.
I remember during a conference a woman came up to me and she said, "How does it feel being black in this department"; And to be quite frank, I didn't know how to answer mostly because I never felt alienated. The people at my university embrace me for who I am. LIke I said it's not a black or white thing. It's an ethics thing. I'm not going to like to someone because they're white. It's because theyre lazy, or have poor coding skills, or focus too much on the wrong things.
I'm really glad you feel that way because we are paving the way. Unfortunately, it's not really like that everywhere and I wish it was. Since posting this video many women have reached out to me about their experiences and people do think that way or just assume certain things based on absolutely no valid points. It's interesting that you say its an ethics thing, I really do see a lot of validity in that. I've always thought that it was human nature, we all trust what we know, but the more and more I think about it that not valid. Thanks for sharing, keep paving the way!
Based on your UA-cam page you fit in with your class because you are clueless of black culture or your a white person playing (your living in the past) games. Go take some black history lesson before comparing white mindedness to black reality. Just because you have black skin does not mean you understand black struggle. I got my bachelor's degree in computer science 2 years ago. I'm currently working on my master's. Unfortunately, it's more of a surprise to me when I'm not the only woman or black person in a class.
I’m also in the IT field, but they’re other black girls and guys in my class. It’s a mixture of white black and Asian, so it’s not too bad.

Homegirl, don't pay no mind to your so called classmates. Learn, study, and get all you possibly can out of your college experience. Please stay in that field. I am trying to convince my Black niece to major in computer science/ software development.
Try not to focus too much on being the only Black female in the class. What I highly encourage you to do during your college years is to *network* with others. You should even join the computer club if they have one.
Being a Black female in that field is a plus for you when it is all said and done at the end of the day, so use it to your advantage. If you don't understand any of your classes don't be afraid to ask for help or get a tutor, even if you have to pay. Also use the internet to help you understand the stuff in class that is giving you trouble. Use the internet to help you solve any of the computer science concepts that you may not be grasping right away.
You will do it. I am not a female but I do understand the pressure you are feeling in that field of study you chose. Just stay focus, get help when you need it and you will be fine.

I am an I.T. major at a small/medium sized university. I only know 3 blacks majoring in CS, 3 (including me) in I.T., and 1 in Computer Engineering. Never had more than 1 other black in any of my programming classes.

Hi I really want to do computer science but my parents tell me that I won’t get hired because I’m black and a female and it’s only for whites lol. I have cousins with a ca degree but haven’t gotten jobs yet in the past 3 years.
There is actually a lot that you can do with a Computer Science degree, currently there are not enough people graduating with CS degrees and companies are starting to find ways to decrease the pipeline by increasing their minority hiring. Please go ahead and pursue the degree you will find a job.

Why didn't you transfer from the university or at least bring the department's attention to the matter. Show them that you don't tolerate that kinda behavior. I would've done that if I were in your case.
Thats a good point. Uhm outside of these few horrible experiences I have had, I grew to really love my college and establish myself. There was also the fear of going through it all again at another college. The way I see it, its not that my school is the issue. Its the mentality that is held by people around, and by transferring I felt like I would still bump into the same thing. I don't know if that makes sense.
Wow you really had me thinking about your comment. Theres also other factors that play in like funding is also another big reason why I have not transferred. I have a really good scholarship here too. Thanks for asking that cause that really made me think and dig deep

I've been in computer science and mistreated by all the guys in the classes for as long as I could remember. It's been so hard. Yes I am embarrassingly a white female, but it is no easier for a white woman than an African American woman. I wished I was African American every morning and night because I didn't realize until watching this that it's just as harsh. I am 16 and and ready to give up my love of computers I have had since I was a child. It isn't a racial issue. It's gender in computer science. I don't know what it is but men can just be so cruel to women trying to expand into computer science and it's so disappointing. This has nothing to do with race, at least in New York. Men are mean to women in general in the field I do not understand why.
Hey girl, thanks for sharing that because that also offeres a new insight to me, I'm sorry that you also go through some of this stuff, this is still a very male dominated field and I guess its human nature for guys to clump together I don't know. But don't let it get in the way of your love for computers. The reason why I speak up on this is to get people to realise that we are also there and we matter as much, companies are starting to realise it too. Like the change wont happen anytime soon, but the least we can do is pave the way for little girls coming behind us. Its not always easy and not all men are like that. It gets better with time just know that you deserve to be there as much as anyone else, and that I think is the hardest thing to overcome.
Ndebele looks like a Nigerian last name so your people are known for being Nigerian, not Black/Black American per sé. Nigerians are the most educated people in the US system. Most Black Americans cannot handle CS except if it's Cisco/CompTIA-associated. There should be more Big Data Engineers, Data Scientists, & DevOps kind of Black American engineers. Nope. Devoid. Void.

At most, they were probably intrigued because the most common two career fields usually taken up by females are social work and medical.
