    I’ve been watching a marathon of this playlist for several hours now and more than half way through. Haven’t committed on all of them but I did go through and like them all. I’ve been doing housework and working on crafts while listening as I go.

    I discovered it accidentally a few years back. Left some black plastic i had out on the ground. It killed everything, so I moved it over a sticker patch that stared. Can't have grand kids running around in a sticker patch. It worked beautifully and a little water and my St Augustine recovered just great. :)

    Awesome idea, I'm sure I can find some free or cheap plastic to try this. I hate dealing with weeds.

      It's dang sure worth a try if it doesn't cost you anything.

    It WORKS awesome. We have done it before. It kills everything and the wee seeds. That are up high any ways. If you can plant 🌱 with out rototilling you won't have many weeds this season. How soon do you start planting the garden

    • @ArmsFamilyHomestead
      @ArmsFamilyHomestead  7 років тому

      Well I'm going to be able to plant lots of stuff much earlier this year than any year in the past because of the high tunnel. The outside side garden will probably get started planting around early April. Cool season crops could go out earlier but they will hopefully be well on there way in the high tunnel by then.... I least I hope so! lol

    We use to put it down in the fall and keep it covered all winter. The down side is when you uncover it watch for snakes and mice. They love the warmth of it in the early spring.

      I'll watch for the snakes for sure. As you can imagine we have plenty of snakes out here in the woods.

    I've used it a few years back. it dose work really well, I've never used it with the white clear plastic. i've only used the black and it works fine. if you are using it in an old garden that had a bunch of weeds. it will force the weeds to germinate and then get burned off from the heat and lack of water.

    Tried to use it in my Calfornia garden. Killed the weeds and the weed seeds about an inch down. Don't till after removing the plastic, it will only bring the deeper weed seeds to surface where they can sprout. Like your videos and your farm very much.

      So would you recommend that I should first till it and manually remove the visible root system and then put a tarp on it?
      I am preparing ground so that I could put grass seed sometime early feb next year. I am from Austin, tx.
      Here’s what I am now thinking:
      a) Remove all the existing weeds by running a Lawnmover
      b) till the ground, remove root system and then level the ground to some extent.
      c) Lay down the tarp and keep it there for next 6-7 months.
      d) remove the tarp sometime in feb next year and put compost and top soil.
      e) get the irritating sprinkler system installed by someone.
      f) put grass seed.
      Except for point e, I intend to do everything on my own.

    Maybe throw a couple of sandbags in the center of each piece to keep it from rising up if you get a bit of wind. Interested to see how everything turns out. Nice video!

    Daniel, I would love to know if the tapping method kills Bermuda grass. Keep us in the loop. Thanks!

    • @ArmsFamilyHomestead
      @ArmsFamilyHomestead  7 років тому

      According to my market gardening neighbor this is the best way to kill bermuda grass in a garden. You just have to leave it covered for quite a long time. It would probably also need to be covered during the growing season because the dormant grass in the winter would probably come back if you uncovered it to early.

    Daniel, I've used this method many times. It works pretty good. I will just warn you to keep an eye out for snakes under the plastic. They love to sun bath under it.

    It works perfect, and it works really good if you do it in late summer to burn off a new garden site, come spring bare dirt.

    I'm curious to see how this works for you, we tried it two years ago and ended up with a thick layer of moss under most areas, but we used blue tarps 😕

    • @ArmsFamilyHomestead
      @ArmsFamilyHomestead  7 років тому

      I tried a method once of planting in huge pots and put down big blue tarps to cover the ground first. It didn't work very well either but I'm pretty sure it's because the tarps allow water to pass through and and since its a fabric mesh the weeds could come up through the tarp.

    • @tara_a_santiago
      @tara_a_santiago 7 років тому

      Yeah the woven pattern on the tarp was not conducive to the plan...I'm sure you will have better luck with the plastic

    Why do you keep saying Solarization when you're using black plastic ?
    Solarization is when you use 4- 6 mil clear plastic.
    Occultation is when you use black plastic .
