first ever surfboard was a hammi down pu 6'3 dagger, way above my skill level at the time. Had cracks and pressure dings everywhere but I loved the hell out of it. All about the stoke and will to surf.
The kids coming up today & this “modern era” of surfing is/are off the charts sick with it. Watching these cats makes me so proud. I’m a product of the 70’s & 80’s & whatever talent & skills we thought we had learned/possessed after two decades of surfing, these kids surpassed before they got out of jr. high. It’s f’ing unbelievable. I have 2 young daughters that have taken up the sport & through them, I’m quasi connected to the current surf generation & consider myself lucky for it. For a few years there, I wasn’t so sure where surfing was “going” but now that my kids are living the lifestyle & im lucky enough to see these kids on the regular, I’m convinced there’s way more growth ahead & the sport is in more than capable hands. There is no ceiling & their potential is limitless. Hopefully, pro surfing will grow at the same rapid rate & become much more lucrative for the participants!!!
Surfing is about you and friends surfing waves and experiencing what moments are going to happen on a wave . And hopefully these are happy and something that you can talk about for the rest of your lives
Great feature, Surfer! I live here in town and I'm out at Lowers all the time and I always see these kids out. They are just awesome people all-around.
(one) down side of SoCal... all the weirdness around (some not all Im sure... ) parents and groms... I live in Huntington Beach... if you go to the south of the pier... you may see bunch of parents with giant tripod cameras pointed to the beach and groms (even on weekdays)... the ugly side is it seems kids are "home schooled" so they can surf during the day... once I saw a big guy yelling at his small daughter, "get back out there you didnt catch enough waves !"
You are correct, homeschooling is awesome but you do have way too many agro parents banking on their kids going pro. I haven't been surfing in months now and only miss what it was 15 years ago when I was homeschooled. I used to have 6' river all to myself all the time, I would ride my bike down there, surf next to the surf teams then stay till 11-noon just surfing my brains out. Now no matter what someone is out, forget weekends.

San Clemente surfers, on a San Diego wave. Funny for so many years we talked about going "Up to Trestles", didn't even know it was in SD! But SC is so much closer because of the Marine Corps base.... Anyway, good for them, that's a good wave and the other OC breaks are not exactly right in their back yard.
Everybody who surfs should definitely move to the SoCal area. All those perfect waves everyday. Flawless conditions. Inexpensive equipment. Its surfing heaven. I left in '79. Lol...

Archie , steave clay ,Dino andino, Andy fomenko Todd griswana, , Kieth sasaki and much more.. this was the early 80:s oh, I forgot the beshen family, but they were still boogie boarding by the time I left town for colder waters... Trestles and waves in San Clemente are Point Breaks... waves are usually small and super soft but probably consistent... Im just theorizing but maybe this helps to build stronger surfers and there are a lot of places to surf in SoCal altogether beach breaks and few reef breaks... additionally the climate is milder warmer so its easier to go out practice more often (than for example NorCal... Im from NorCal its more rugged up there plus size waves more big wave surfing up there... ) Plus it's Southern California and there's a positive surf culture here... I think today Vans Opening starts at Huntington Beach (super fun to watch... sit on the sand and watch amazing surfers on tiny waves... once it was big and pumping few years ago but usually surf seem to get tiny by the time contest starts... too funny :)

Yup mostly now, but when the El Ninos hit and the NW swells roll in at 10+ that place and some incredibly long rights. I used to RIP it up on a 9ft Harbour, best memories over there. Now all the waters are polluted and crowded as hell. Nope.

Every place there is a good break there are good surfers, you just don't see them. Try looking up Michigan winter surfers, 30 degree water and ripping up the place. Damn they can surf, cause you don't want to fall in that water

Yup mostly now, but when the El Ninos hit and the NW swells roll in at 10+ that place and some incredibly long rights. I used to RIP it up on a 9ft Harbour, best memories over there. Now all the waters are polluted and crowded as hell. Nope.
