- In this video I use my hydraulic press to forge a 10 pound sledgehammer. Sledgehammers like this are normally used for striking top tools like punches, flatters and fullers.

Hi my name is Paul Pinto and I’m an 18 year old maker from Connecticut. This channel will cover woodworking, metal fabrication, blacksmithing and much more! I will be posting weekly videos of my latest projects so make sure you subscribe!
Came here from Jimmy. Loved your work. Great videos. Keep on moving. Thanks.
Nice!! Thank you!!
That was like reading a good story; I couldn't put it down 'til the very end. Usually I skip forward on _maker's videos,_ but your techniques and variety of tools makes for captivating viewing.
Thank you I appreciate it!!
Your press closely resembles our stand up log splitter. Gives me a great idea, thanks!!
DUDE! I just heard your shout out on Making It podcast. That’s awesome! It’s cool to see all your latest channel growth. You deserve it. You make great stuff.
Thanks man!! I appreciate it!
That’s what I’m talking about!! Awesome sledge! Got the axe in the mail yesterday and all I can say is it is amazing! I can’t wait to try it out and with this hurricane coming my way I may have to put it to good use! Thanks Paul!
Thank you!! Im glad you like the axe! let me know how it does!
Came over after watching Jimmy's vlog. Great stuff Paul! Can't wait to watch more.
Thank you!! it was really cool of jimmy to do that!
Thanks bro! You made upsetting that long stock down look easy! But we all know it is not easy even with a press. Just lets your growing skill shine to those that appreciate it! Thanks bro Anthony Kent (got the tee shirt today thank you very much)
Thanks Anthony!! I appreciate it and I’m glad you got the shirt!
Love watching these, lots of skill and art at work here. Good vibes
Thanks man!!
I did not know that you hardened a smithing hammer! Good info!
Nicely done!
I like hearing the shop sounds.
Thanks for the video...
Thank you!!
Awesome work man pleasure to watch
Thanks man I appreciate it!!
ThatIs a bad ass hammer. Wow they just keep getting better and better.
Thanks man!!
I love the work bro. Your great at what you do. I’m coming from jimmys channel and I’m sub to you because you deserve a lot of subs!
Thanks man!! I really appreciate it!
Sent over by Jimmy D and subbed, you have some kick ass skills! Love the sledge!!!
thats awesome! Thank you!!
Ill never make one but I enjoyed watching you make one. Real nice job
Thank you!!
Outstanding! Great hammer Paul! Punch got hot. Make a cup ladle to cool it as you go. Piece of exhaust pipe slightly flared with opposite end capped works nicely. Split round stock a few inches and form a crutch to fit the pipe and rivet or weld for a handle. Coal dust works well as a lube but beeswax and graphite is pretty darn good too. Cheap small crockpot to melt. Use agricultural seed lubricant graphite. Quantity at low price. The wax is just a carrier the graphite does the heavy lifting. Forge out a long handle spoon to apply. Flame and smoke but you’ll get the hang of it!
Thank you!! And yeah normally I have a die that pulls the hammers off the punch but this one was too big to fit under it and this punch is h13 so I just need to let it air cool so it doesn’t crack but I think I’m going to switch it to different alloy so I can cool it with water
Perfect, Paul.
keep the good job
Thank you!!
Very nicely done Paul.
The proportions will fool you about size unless it is sitting next to a smaller hammer.
I did a 10# early last year.
Started with 2-7/8" round 1045. Pressed it square with the edges still rounded .
I forged a final drift that matches the commercial sledge hammer handles that I used in the press.
That will be an awesome strikers sledge. Now get someone to strike for you with it!
Thank you!! Yeah you’re right it’s hard to tell how big it is when it’s by itself. And that’s a good idea making the drift the same as the store bought handles, makes replacing one much faster
Outstanding, you really have the touch. A pleasure watching you work. Diresta turned me on to your channel. Thanks Jimmy.
Thank you I appreciate it!! and thats awesome!

Mr DiResta sent me. Glad he did.
Phenomenal work! 👍👊
Thanks!!
Very Very Nice Video g good
Bravo MAESTRO
Thank you!!
That was awesome doing that upsetting, turned out amazing like usual. When that drift gets stuck in the press through the hammer would some sort of lube help, some use coal dust or maybe some linseed oil and beeswax, just a thought. ? Well done.
Thanks Len!! Normally I have a bottom die that removes the punch from the hammer but this hammer was way too big to fit under it so I just had to hit it off with a hammer
Ok yeah would be hard having a big hammer like that.
Cool Stuff...Jimmy D sent me here...
Awesome!
That turned out fantastic! What will you use it for?
Thanks chad!! Probably for striking and it just looks cool haha
Nice one hand hammer 😀
haha Thanks!
How long does a piece of metal that size have to be in your forge for a reheat?
Starting from room temperature probably 10 minutes but after that just a few minutes for each heat
Ty sir
0:40 What's falling from the metal when you press it ?
Would you be able to make a custom version of this hammer for me?
How do I get a 2.2 lb one from you?
Beautiful Sledgehammer! Did you make the Hydraulic Press or did you buy?
Thank you!! I built it and I made a few videos about the whole process
Thank You, I have built Powerhammer and Treadle Hammer. I am wanting to build a Press. Look forward see the videos. Thank you!
Hey brother your amazing at this. Do u sell your hammers? Also do u make AUTOBODY hammers? In real time how long did it take to do this hammer? Thanks for sharing!🇺🇸👍
Thank you!! And yes I sell hammers on my website the link is in the description I can also take custom orders too!
Freaking ridiculous! It's awesome!
Thank you!!
That's a sweet sledge. How long does it take your forge to heat up to a good forging temp? I'm in the process of building the same one, seems really nice.
Thanks!! and it probably takes 5-10 minutes
Nice job! :) What kind of oil are you using? :)
Thanks!! Boiled linseed oil
Excelent 💪👍
Thanks man!!

👍 another nice one Paul. If you were ever to make a small ball pein hammer, say 6oz, i'd be interested in one. This old body is probly too wrecked to take up smithing lol. would you ship to Australia ?
Thank you!! I could make you anything you want I do sell a ball pein but it’s on the heavy side. Just message me on my website if you would like a custom size one the link to my site. Is in the description
Cheers mate, just gotta recover from this weeks "retail therapy" before i spend any more 😂
Hi Bill Len here, yes He ships to Australia got a rounding hammer from Paul and some other things which he kindly put in the package for me. I love my hammer, so well made. Cheers mate, you take care aye?
Cheers Len, just gotta recover from a few other purchases first 😁 but yes i'd be proud to own some of his work, such a clever young un
Yeah you just plug along until you can afford it. Yeah he certainly is a cleaver young bloke.
Too small for two hands too big for one hand
