i was there . chuck and the gang were truly GREAT. it's true. No one saw this stick comen. sang w/ TVHM for 10 years during that time. the tenor Richard was my mentor. thanks for the post :)
Breaking the pencils means disqualification from the contest. They knew this bit would disqualify them from the competition and it appears the judges thought it funny enough to wait till the end to display the breaking
Jack Bridges: In case you haven't found an answer yet, the song is "Back in Dad and Mother's Day." The Society has published an arrangement, but with a different medley in the interlude.
BOSTON COMMON BACK IN DAD AND MOTHER'S DAY LYRICS Some folks say that I'm sentimental That I can't deny I can't help feeling sentimental (sentimental) And here's the reason why I wish they'd write songs again the way they wrote them(the way that they did) Back in dad and mother's days (those were the days) Those melodies, those harmonies Will always be a precious memory to me There were songs with a smile And there were songs with a tear There were songs of old broadway I wish they'd write songs again the way they wrote them Back in Dad and Mother's day For there was heart of my heart (my heart) I love (I love) you And there was down in the old neighborhood And strolling through the park on Sunday afternoon Or paddling Madeline home And there were songs with a smile And there were songs with a tear There were songs of old broadway I wish they'd write songs again the way they wrote (the way that they wrote) them Back in Dad and Mother's, wonderful days Take me back, back, back to dear old Dad and Mother's days (those are the good old, those are the good old days)
The best way to sing it is to do it backwards from tag to beginning. It will confuse the judges and get the audience roaring with uncontrollable laughter.
I got it after the first measure because they were from my era. Unfortunately, I was laughing so loudly through the whole thing that I had some trouble hearing!
@@walterhaight6872 do you have the custard set video? i sang with TVHM. mell knight arranged it. sang it in Canada evergreen dist. worked hard on those 2 songs. wonderful times. daron tenor lead thank you
Best stunt I've ever seen in a barbershop contest!

Thank you for this crucial context! I saw the silhouettes make a breaking gesture but hadn’t realized exactly what it was or what it signified.
No matter how many times I have seen this, it is always funny. Great bunch of entertainers and very, very creative.
Every time I watch this, I cry from laughing so hard! 😂😂😂😂😂
As in _literally do_ the Boston Common! 😆🤣🤣
That was ridiculously funny! Brilliant!!!!
the Aliens? I saw them in Anchorage Alaska ..awesome!
I totally forgot.
this was great!
One of those all time great contest moments. It was one of the first contests I ever attended.
Same here, Chris.
Same here...I had no idea why the audience was laughing when they began to sing...I thought they were a really good quartet! Little did I know...
What a hilarious routine, only with barbershop!

BOSTON COMMON BACK IN DAD AND MOTHER'S DAY LYRICS
Some folks say that I'm sentimental
That I can't deny
I can't help feeling sentimental (sentimental)
And here's the reason why
I wish they'd write songs again the way they wrote them(the way that they did)
Back in dad and mother's days (those were the days)
Those melodies, those harmonies
Will always be a precious memory to me
There were songs with a smile
And there were songs with a tear
There were songs of old broadway
I wish they'd write songs again the way they wrote them
Back in Dad and Mother's day
For there was heart of my heart (my heart) I love (I love) you
And there was down in the old neighborhood
And strolling through the park on Sunday afternoon
Or paddling Madeline home
And there were songs with a smile
And there were songs with a tear
There were songs of old broadway
I wish they'd write songs again the way they wrote (the way that they wrote) them
Back in Dad and Mother's, wonderful days
Take me back, back, back to dear old Dad and Mother's days (those are the good old, those are the good old days)
Thanks, Eveline Obvious.
Thank You!
I can only hope to represent the boulder city district of Southern Nevada this well some day!

What does it mean when they break their pencils?
Is it like "I'm not scoring this!"?
Lip sinking to a recording is not allowed The Milli Vanilli Quartet is not allowed in contests
We're they lip syncing?
I think so because the recording kept being messed with. So funny
I want to know, what was the Boston Common’s reaction to this? 🤩
Brilliant!
HILARIOUS!
This is my favorite video!
I laugh every time.
Awesome.......what year was this?
1991. I filmed it.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I can think of a modern day quartet I would like to see pull this off. And actually sing, instead of using a recording.
