I've always liked Hummel's trumpet concerto, this bassoon concerto is equally enjoyable. Love the mellow tones of the bassoon, I imagine it must be really hard to play it as well as this.

    WOW WHOA :-O
From a guy that has a Doctorate in Music on Bassoon from The Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, I can say that this performance is absolutely amazing. The best I've ever heard (not to mention SEEN via video recording). My previous standard was an audio-only recording of Klaus Thunemann performing the Hummel Concerto, but this performance by Mathis is clearly superior. I used to listen to the Klaus Thunemann CD via headphones while playing along and I ultimately won college concerto competitions as a result, so my praise is as valid and genuine as is possible. :-)

Now one of Hummel's most popular works and firmly in the repertoire for the bassoon. It is these concertos for solo instruments like the trumpet, mandolin and bassoon that are driving Hummel's extraordinary revival to once again stand tall with the great composers of his time.

Concertos performed with bassoon as a soloist are not frequent. Hummel, however composes, given his amazing talent, a masterpiece that is wonderful representation of the classic-romantic period he lived through. This music is magnificent and emotionally touches us deeply.
The soloist’s interpretation is admirable (especially for the sensibility and technique in which he interprets the theme) as well as the orchestra and its direction. Bravissimo!!! Viva the fabulous music of Hummel. Thanks for this excellent and divine recording.

+Harry Andruschak WSMR-FM, the Weasels, Skunks, Martens, Rodents, Ferrets and Mustelids of Sarasota, are very fond of Hummel, and play a lot of his pieces; on the other hand they are not very fond of choral music, so they have never played any of JNH's Masses.

+Harry Andruschak Thanks for the KMZT information, I hope they stream online. Santa Barbara, CA used to have the choice between two classical music Radio Stations, K(ommon) U(niversally) S(o so) C(lassical) (call sign KQSC), and the home grown KDB (Kute But Dull) an independent classical which went from being a commercial radio (with sponsors) to being a non-commercial run by the Santa Barbara Foundation. SBF sold out (cost too much run) to KUSC and now Santa Barbara has only the KUSC. Jim (I never play period instrument performances) Sweda is one of the "highlights" using the term loosely, in spite of his policy that unless its the number one recording (which it never is in his opinion) you rarely hear historically informed practices orchestras, his favored choice for Handel's Messiah is the bloated Sir Thomas Beecham's version of 1959. Thank goodness PC Bonnie Grice left, (a very nice person, otherwise) left for greener pastures long ago; one can only listen to so much Hildegard von Bingham. Bonnie Grice started the "Hildegard of Bingham" craziness. When was the last time a classical radio announcer said Carl Maria of Weber or Ludwig from Beethoven?

This work is heard with surprising regularity on the classical station here in New Orleans. I find it fascinating how the second movement has a cadenza, given how the first movement lacks one. But the second movement seems to be the most heavily based on Mozart's model out of the three movement, so the traditional request for a cadenza is appropriate in that regard.

Conducting with the baton in your left hand is like playing the clarinet with the right hand on top!

He might be left handed. But right hand on top isn’t practical.

One thing that sets the Hummel concerto apart amongst bassoon concerti is the complexity and development in the third movement.
By the finale, the bassoonist usually considers him/herself to be in the "home stretch", but has to face many significant hurdles in this movement, with a devilishly complicated second development section, which hits just as the bassoonist's chops can no longer take it. Good job here, but still better rendered in the premier recording of the work by the incomparable John Miller.

I just noticed he is conducting LEFT HANDED! On the rare occasion I used to conduct, I wanted to do so left-handed (I'm right-handed, but loved the challenge of learning to be ambidextrous). The big shots always told me to conduct right-handed, so I did..
