I've always liked Hummel's trumpet concerto, this bassoon concerto is equally enjoyable. Love the mellow tones of the bassoon, I imagine it must be really hard to play it as well as this.
WOW WHOA :-O From a guy that has a Doctorate in Music on Bassoon from The Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, I can say that this performance is absolutely amazing. The best I've ever heard (not to mention SEEN via video recording). My previous standard was an audio-only recording of Klaus Thunemann performing the Hummel Concerto, but this performance by Mathis is clearly superior. I used to listen to the Klaus Thunemann CD via headphones while playing along and I ultimately won college concerto competitions as a result, so my praise is as valid and genuine as is possible. :-)
Now one of Hummel's most popular works and firmly in the repertoire for the bassoon. It is these concertos for solo instruments like the trumpet, mandolin and bassoon that are driving Hummel's extraordinary revival to once again stand tall with the great composers of his time.
Concertos performed with bassoon as a soloist are not frequent. Hummel, however composes, given his amazing talent, a masterpiece that is wonderful representation of the classic-romantic period he lived through. This music is magnificent and emotionally touches us deeply. The soloist’s interpretation is admirable (especially for the sensibility and technique in which he interprets the theme) as well as the orchestra and its direction. Bravissimo!!! Viva the fabulous music of Hummel. Thanks for this excellent and divine recording.
Impressed by the joyfull musical synthesis of this unkown but brilliant composer ,and by the clarity , accuracy and sensitivity of the artist Matthias Racz. I am grateful to both for this fine piece of art. Greetings from Athens Greece
Beautifully done sir, those that did not attend missed out big time. Am impressed all the more that the soloist played from memory. A superb performance. Thank you.
Thanks Bassoon Bassoon for sharing! Congratulations Mathis for your superb performance!!!!!. On musicians like Stier and others REAL artists is the heritage of human knowledge and eastern europe is full of them. There are so much "artists" which barely know write down their own names but are named as genius by western media. Sad...
If you live in Los Angeles, and have to rely on the two classical music radio stations KUSC and KMZT, Hummel wrote one, and only one work. A trumpet concerto. How nice to surf You Tube and enjoy so many of his other works.
+Harry Andruschak WSMR-FM, the Weasels, Skunks, Martens, Rodents, Ferrets and Mustelids of Sarasota, are very fond of Hummel, and play a lot of his pieces; on the other hand they are not very fond of choral music, so they have never played any of JNH's Masses.
+Harry Andruschak Thanks for the KMZT information, I hope they stream online. Santa Barbara, CA used to have the choice between two classical music Radio Stations, K(ommon) U(niversally) S(o so) C(lassical) (call sign KQSC), and the home grown KDB (Kute But Dull) an independent classical which went from being a commercial radio (with sponsors) to being a non-commercial run by the Santa Barbara Foundation. SBF sold out (cost too much run) to KUSC and now Santa Barbara has only the KUSC. Jim (I never play period instrument performances) Sweda is one of the "highlights" using the term loosely, in spite of his policy that unless its the number one recording (which it never is in his opinion) you rarely hear historically informed practices orchestras, his favored choice for Handel's Messiah is the bloated Sir Thomas Beecham's version of 1959. Thank goodness PC Bonnie Grice left, (a very nice person, otherwise) left for greener pastures long ago; one can only listen to so much Hildegard von Bingham. Bonnie Grice started the "Hildegard of Bingham" craziness. When was the last time a classical radio announcer said Carl Maria of Weber or Ludwig from Beethoven?
This is still my go to performance. Everytime I want to listen to this piece I come here! He is just excellent! I wish I could purchase a copy of this recording!
+pipedreams1685 Frank Zappa once said that he didn't understand why people loved baseball, but he LOVED the sound of the bassoon. I forget the exact quote, but it was always one of his favorite instruments.
I don't, at least not when the bassoon is used to play horrible ancient music for the sole reason it is the only music written in a certain period by composers that are not completely forgotten for good reasons
Fun fact: Mathis was only five years old when he recorded this. This was just before he won the solo job in WDR Köln. His parents told me he had been practicing 19 hours every day since the day he accidentally put a bassoon reed in his mouth at only 3.5 months old.
Thoroughly enjoyable and a pleasure to listen to. Mathis Kaspar Stier is obviously very talented. I actually prefer this Bassoon Concerto to Mozart's Bassoon Concerto!
One of the most difficult pieces for bassoon. But the most beautiful, in my opinion, for the range and dexterity of the instrument. Don't give up nor sell yourself short.
It's a shame that this genre of music is dying. I do like most of the newer music, but, this music speaks to the heart and soul only if you actually listen to it.
I say it's sad to see such a small audience, perhaps only 20% of seats available. Alas, the appreciation of Beauty is found by only the few. But thank you for sharing.
Well, these days popularity is not necessarily an indication of a fine composition, as this work by Hummel shows. Fortunately, there still are people who know how to appreciate fine musical art.
This work is heard with surprising regularity on the classical station here in New Orleans. I find it fascinating how the second movement has a cadenza, given how the first movement lacks one. But the second movement seems to be the most heavily based on Mozart's model out of the three movement, so the traditional request for a cadenza is appropriate in that regard.
@@nneewwll 20 fingers? That would be a rare human. But you don't even need 10. While, for a 10-fingered person, there is a designated position for each finger when hold the bow, you could most certainly be missing a finger and still hold the bow and play.
One thing that sets the Hummel concerto apart amongst bassoon concerti is the complexity and development in the third movement. By the finale, the bassoonist usually considers him/herself to be in the "home stretch", but has to face many significant hurdles in this movement, with a devilishly complicated second development section, which hits just as the bassoonist's chops can no longer take it. Good job here, but still better rendered in the premier recording of the work by the incomparable John Miller.
I just noticed he is conducting LEFT HANDED! On the rare occasion I used to conduct, I wanted to do so left-handed (I'm right-handed, but loved the challenge of learning to be ambidextrous). The big shots always told me to conduct right-handed, so I did..
He makes it sound infinitely easier than it really is, the tone, the articulation, the cleanliness, everything is amazing

That articulation, the octaves, the colors, perfect
What lovely sounds. Never realized a Basoon could sound so heavenly. Thank you Mathis Kaspar Stier

Of course the bassoon can sound heavenly. Get with the program! 😁

We don't hear bassoon concertos that often. Here is an exquisite example!
this makes me proud to be a bassoonist
The basson is one of the most beautiful sounds in this world.
europeans would be proud to be fagotts
The locals missed out on a real treat. Brilliant playing from soloist and orchestra. My first hearing of this work and will definitely listen again.
Deserving of a much larger audience than it received. Absolutely lovely!
I was thinking this.

There's one advantage of a small audience though: no coughing between movements.

lucky for him he received an audience much greater then any concert hall could ever provide

Hummel's greatness was knocked of the mainstream map by his one big bad main competitor : a dark little man named Beethovern.
