I disagree with lots of these. Train shelters especially. They literally the best shelters in the game of how much space and comfy they are. 5 stars hotels in Rain World
I rate the metropolis shelters the most. Not just because i'm an artificer main, but because of their view. When you see the sunset in the metropolis shelter(third one in the video), you fall in love with the city instantly. Always my favorite. I should go eat some more scavengers.
I get wanting to spend more time on the larger, cooler shelters, but you CANNOT tell me shelters with a side exit are the same as top-exit and bottom-exit shelters. With bottom-exits, you've got way less space to put items, so if you have a lot of stuff in the shelter, it takes more tries to pick up the item(s) you want. Additionally, if you're playing a slugcat that can use/eat large corpses, it's extremely difficult to pull any large kills up into the shelter. Top-exits, while having additional ground space compared to bottom-exits, are even worse when it comes to bodies of other creatures. While it's easy to bring a corpse into the shelter, it's nearly impossible to take it back out, leaving the carcass to be a permanent fixture of the shelter making it near impossible to pick up other items. While I tend to avoid putting corpses into top-exit shelters for this reason, sometimes a predator will follow you into these shelters anyways, and then your only two options are to die or turn the intruder into permanent home decor. Side-exit shelters, on the other hand, make it easier to drag bodies both in and out of the shelter, and if the shelter is normal-sized, you have a lot more ground area so that you can more easily grab the item(s) you want. Also, full-sized side shelters can be used to practice scug flips :) TL;DR: Vanilla-style shelters with side exits are the goat, and shouldn't be lumped in with shelters that have top or bottom exits
man i agree with u on top-exit shelters. i once had two lizards go into that one shelter in sky islands (u kno the one) and kill each other. it was a struggle to just get out of the shelter cuz i was underneath two lizard corpses
The shelter is Moon's leg is always my favourite- I somehow forget about it until I revisit it again, then I gasp. Plus, it's in my favorite scug campaign so that's more bonus points
All shelters are good shelters... Except for those small ass shelters, do you know how many items got glitched out of bounds from sleeping in one of those small shelters? Too many!
As someone who has spent far too long trying to get yeeks to places they shouldn’t go in saint’s campaign (yeek high-jump in conjunction with saint’s tongue is a sight to behold.) I wholeheartedly agree, as yeeks love nothing more than just falling through the floor in a small shelter.
That last bit that I said is actually not true, because on thing yeeks love more than clipping out of bounds is immediately running towards their death the second you take your eyes off of them to eat food.
Shelters are simple, yet necessary aspects of the game. To see some of the particularly intriguing ones put on a list is a nice bonus, as I have had a personal goal in assigning a specific shelter to each slugcat to make a specific home for them. Of course, I am using Diverse Shelters, but this video does indeed help with my research. I do believe Spearmaster may get the Zapper shelter- not for the room or decoration property, but for the ambience... maybe with a bit of imagination going into the possibility of drawings covering the interior walls of the shelter as well.
i always liked the shelter at the top of subterranean (after the karma gate from farm arrays, but before the giant drop) even though its a basic shelter i think the view up there is great, it's comfortingly secluded and the idea of slugcat resting atop such a giant drop is so cool imo
Honestly every room in farm arrays feels like that to me, it’s so secluded and far away from anything else. I would love the region if it wasn’t for the worm grass but I guess there are always alternate routes to take
I consider the utilitarian qualities of a shelter (amount of room, exit orientation, and location) to be more important personally. TLDR: I like roomy shelters with lots of nearby food and neighbors that aren't too nosey. Bottom exits means that the shelters stay functional after a failure, but this comes at the cost of storage. Top exits are very bad, as they're always small, and if you kill something in them you're not dragging it out unless you're a big scug like Artificer or Gourmand, in which case it's there for good. The side exit generic large shelters are good enough for storing as many items as you want, but the train cars are a luxury, especially for the carnivores that need space to store their food in bulk. The second closest shelter to the Farm Arrays gate in the Sky Islands (near Saint's spawn) is among my favorites location wise; there's like four popcorn plants, two eggbugs, and a lot of noodleflies nearby, enough that you can make the nearby lizards docile, though the shelter itself sucks. The train shelter in Subterranean near the Outer Expanse gate is really nice because of the space and ample food nearby, but leaving is a tad difficult, especially in Expedition with the hunted burden on. Lastly, if you want to hoard any items in your shelters, beware the ones that scavengers have easy access to; they'll pilfer them. The shelter near the gate to Shaded Citadel in the Industrial Complex is pretty bad for this.
I’ve only really taken visual quality into account with this list, because taking location and orientation etc. into consideration would mean a much longer video and I would have to review every shelter individually
There are some really cool shelters shown here that I haven't been too yet in game... man the developers really created the "feel" and ambience of the game well, it's one of the things I like a lot about it
The ambience of Rain World is one of the main reasons I love it so much. After getting through spearmaster I just fell in love with the game’s world and story
ough........ STRONGLY disagree with the train car shelter ranking and mass-grouping (someone here said they're like 5-star hotels in rain world and yeah. they do feel like that), but overall really nice video set to some nice (mostly rw) music :) also, i know this video only ranks the shelters themselves, but imo the surrounding room(s) sometimes vastly impact my feelings on a shelter....... for instance, the buggy mechanism outer expanse shelter is not only gorgeous (if a bit odd lmao) but hangs off one of the largest oe rooms with so many connections, and plays one of my favourite tracks from downpour, daze. the vibe is immaculate for real...... there's also a train car shelter in metropolis that's always stuck out to me for being so secluded - it's at the far bottom corner of the house of braids, across this big pool of water and parked train cars. iunno what it is about it but it's so pretty, with the car itself full of vegetation and another beautiful track that plays in the adjacent room, phasing. god rain world has good music ........anyway what was i talking about?? jfc sorry @_@ i like funny shelter. zapper shelter/shelters with views really are the shit though fr fr
If I took the surrounding areas of shelters into account I would have to rank a lot more of them, which would have taken way longer. Also yes the metropolis train shelter is awesome, the surrounding area is so nice.
YEAH i realised that'd be much more of a chore :'D ah well. understandable for the sake of not making a video as long as my comment lmaooo and hell yeahhhh!!! honestly metropolis's shelters in general are great (as are most of downpour's)....... even the more "standard" ones have such memorable locations :)
honestly, I think you should've rate the basic and small shelters separately based on the entrance's orientation. Since it is easier for items or creatures to just leave the shelter if the entrance faces downwards, It's honestly very annoying. I don't mind a small shelter if the entrance faces upwards, but man, I just hate big shelters with downwards facing entrance. edit: ah, you're viewing it from aesthetic perspective, fair enough.
Does it work now? last time i was using it was during the update that broke a bunch of mods a few months ago and I had to uninstall that one as well as Biography and a few others. People on the steam page still say its brokey
My favorite shelter is that basic one in Shoreline with the small shaft of light making a random orange triangle. I always called it the Pizza Shelter. I also like that one near the top of the Wall that has the unnecessary turns in the pipe leading into it.
You forgot the train shelter in metropolis, the one thats all the way left of the subway. however, good video, and honestly, that shelter is pretty hard to find so dw
theres a shelter under shoreline and is nearest to lttm . theres that one little detail of an orange leaf or something and it looks like an ancients hand... and it has been annoying me alot
This is such a well-produced video! You really took your time editing the clips, picking the perfect music, and all of it just makes me want to hop on Rain World and just... appreciate the surroundings for a while, stop worrying about surviving. I wonder if you got all these shelter clips by travelling around the world or by using the map warp mod or whatever its name is!
The vertical shelters is the worst ones, corpses always fall out from it And it seems that this annoying shit was intentional because pipes in normal rooms dont behave like that
scavenger kill squads, scavenger kill squads That's the reason. Notice how many shelters are not accessible by scavenger in that region (albeit some are)
@@tetraneo that makes sense, I guess I just didn’t notices they were there for spearmaster? If so then it just makes sense that either spearmaster did it, or the scavs did it when they moved onto pebbles back

I love the subtitles, one thing about if you did voice is it would be much harder to add the random subtitle comments. (And have them be distinguishable from substitles for you talking)
When shelters ranked not by aesthetic but by how good they are ? I can think of 2 shelters in chimney canopy who are D tier because of how frequently you can get spawncamped by scav or others hostiles, or F tier for the one at the far east of pipeyard who serve no other purpose than to trap you into an hard to escape place.
Shelter in Moon's leg gets minus points from me because I managed to wake up in a crevice of the wall in co-op once and could not get out! I'd be curious if you have thoughts on shelters with vertical vs. horizontal openings?
I honestly don’t have a very strong opinion on that because I don’t really use shelters for storage that much. Someone else in the comments wrote a pretty good summary of what makes horizontal orientation better than vertical though
Huh, thought youd be ranking every individual shelter on their position and competition, like in industrial theres the shelter right next to the gate from outskirts, but just moving 4 more screens you have a better shelter in every way.
