  • Who Moved my Cheese by Spencer Johnson
“The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” Robert Burns
Life doesn’t always turn out the way we think it will. When change happens, a lot of us have a natural tendency to resist that change. Why? Simply put, we are afraid of change. Change represents the unknown which challenges our sense of safety and security.
Who Moved my Cheese? is a very simple story about change. It’s about seeing change, anticipating change, and adapting to change. Now, that sounds incredibly boring, but luckily the author, Spencer Johnson, has put a cool little twist on a boring topic and has interwoven the lessons of change into the story of 4 characters: 2 mice named Sniff and Scurry and 2 little people (the same size as mice) named Hem and Haw.
These 4 characters represent parts of us - they represent the simple and complex within each of us. As Spencer put it: “Sometimes we may act like Sniff who sniffs out change early, or Scurry who scurries into action, or Hem who denies and resists change as he fears it will lead to something worse, or Haw who learns to adapt in time when he sees changing can lead to something better!”

My business was going well for the past 3 years, then Elon ruined it.
    Basically he moved my cheese.
I reacted like Hem at first, now I'm embracing my inner Haw and accepted that the cheese is gone, it's time to find new cheese, and I'm trying my best to remain hopeful and optimistic about the new possibilities.

    1. Never give your old cheese away in anticipation of finding new cheese.
    2. Never turn down cheese offered to you, even if you already have too much.
    3. Never turn down cheese offered to you just because you've never seen that kind before and have no idea what to do with it.
    4. When someone brings unfamiliar cheese to you, your response should be "I've done this many times".
    5. Don't let anyone else know you've found some cheese.
    6. Don't share your cheese.Cheese can go away at any time without notice, hence #5.
    7. Cheese can go bad at any time. When this happens, disregard #5 and go ahead and share your cheese. An added benefit of this is that it will appear as if you're finding cheese for others and you'll be a hero.
    8. Do not ask for tools (e.g. software, or a computer that is at least as fast as the secretary's) that will help you bring in new cheese.
    9. Do not expect your management to find you cheese. You are expected to find the cheese.
    10. Be careful. Just because it looks like cheese and/or smells like cheese, it may not actually be cheese.
    11. If you run out of cheese you'll be assigned to do self-assessments until you learn not to run out of cheese.
    12. The self-assessments will take all of your time so you will not be able to look for new cheese.
    13. Did you ever think that maybe they keep moving the cheese because they don't want you to find it?

  • @tone1132
    @tone1132 2 роки тому +3

This is a video that totally disregards any 'calculated risk' just go out and get new 'cheese". Thats not how it works.

    • @wisdom-for-life
      @wisdom-for-life  2 роки тому

At the end of the video I mentioned that I didn’t agree with the book on everything. The cautious person who doesn’t adapt to every change right away is a good thing. You have change agents (the mice in this case) and you have the ones who won’t change at all (those people don’t grow). But then you have the people that eventually adapt to change. The mice take a huge risk chasing new cheese. Agreed!
The ones that take a while to adapt may miss out on new opportunities but they also provide stability to the whole system.
The book is very simple and doesn’t dive into these intricacies. But I do think it was intended to be this way because change is extremely challenging for some so the author wanted to keep it simple and straightforward.

    We're on the road
We move from place to place
And oftentimes when I'm about to call it home
    We'd have to move along
    Life is a constant change
The friends we know we meet along the way
Too soon the times we share form part of yesterday
    'Cause life's a constant change
And nothing stays the same, oh, no
Clouds that move across the skies
Are changing form before our very eyes
Why couldn't we keep time from movin' on?
Hold on to all the years before this moment's gone?
Why must we live the days at such a frightening pace?
We're all like clouds that move across the skies
And changing form before our very eyes
Have we outgrown our Peter Pans and wings?
We've simply grown too old for tales of knights and kings
    'Cause life's a constant change
    And nothing stays the same
    Oh, no

I lived in a unstable childhood but with great parents. We moved all the time and lots of changes happened so it lead me to have my excitement towards change and one of my mottos
“Treat life like a blackjack deck, don’t judge you next hand by your last”
I then had a nervous breakdown that filled me with anxiety. Now every change and next move freeze me. Have spent the last six years trying to reach me old mindset and slowly getting less scared of being in the world.

I was given this book when I worked for a major Gas Company. It has stayed with me in my heart for over 20 years. I think it's a very valuable book to give to employees who are not willing to change to give themselves a chance to think and also to those who you think might make better Management in the future. Luckily, I was one of the ones that they expected to become management (and have always been, since then). Had I not chosen to seek out my cheese, I would not be where I am today.

I must be naive, because although in general terms I may agree with the philosophy sustaining this principle . I also believe that you need a certain energy if not ambition to do that. At the age of 70 for example, you have a moderately quiet and comfortable life should one revolutionize his existence in search of the unreachable or the unattainable? Can someone comfort with an educated opinion or advice. Thnx

Does it really? I think this 12 min video shows that mankind is going down a path of destruction. To see change as something good is a false statement. To remove ones human emotions and beliefs is to lower ones self to mice searching for cheese. Who makes the decision of what should change and when? Why doesnt this video point out that important peace of information. We are human beings made by god and our emotions and beliefs and faith are what we must never loose else we will turn into rats looking for cheese.

Way too simplistic. Not as valuable as you might think. The world is full of people with various strengths and weaknesses. I'm sure there are a lot of autistic people out there who are resistant to change. Like Temple Grandin said, we need them. But what I am really saying is, you can't make people less resistant to change by name-calling, in this case "Hem" and "Haw."

I don't think he would have laugh of his folly if he was old enough to being late at every scarce job opportunity, left with crumbs. You don't always get better if you change. Sometimes you are just too late (even if you are 40 years old).

Sees opportunity for change, let's call it Trend. Forces change even if it does not lead to something better.

I left a boss who refused change because it hindered my career growth. I like to sniff and seek opportunities.
