NOTE: I mentioned the amp IC is also the source of "death farts and restarts", and possibly popping and crackling issues. I've recently discovered this specific issue along with the dc offset pops are coming from failed capacitors around the DAC and sometimes a resistor next to the subwoofer connector. I have a new video up on my channel showing how to repair those issues here: ua-cam.com/video/-YZUv5ErDFw/v-deo.html
Great video! Excellent explanations at just the right pace. I just finished replacing the diode for the no power issue and used your previous video as my guide. This was my first attempt at serious soldering so there were definite moments of 1 step forward, 2 steps back. But I am hopeful it will work; I haven’t reassembled yet to test. I resorted to using solder paste as I don’t have a steady hand. Again, much thanks.
Whilst replacing diode S560 I have lost the little black component that sits between the left hand cathode pin on S560 and the component 01. Can you advise what this component was. Thanks
My HomePod was bricked for almost 3 years now and thanks to your video, I was able to dismantle it without breaking it. Thanks for sharing! Question about the diode, I can only find a two-legged S56 diode, how do I orient it in the board, or test the polarity of it?
I don't know if a two legged one will work, I'm not smart enough to say. Perhaps you can glean some information from the datasheet of the diode you're supposed to use? The two smaller pins on my diode that I point towards the center of the board are the positive pins, and the big single pin that points away from the center of the board is the negative. Diodes also usually use a stripe on the diode to indicate the negative side. And again on the amp board, the pad further from the center of the board is the negative Here's the replacement diode's datasheet: www.diodes.com/assets/Datasheets/ds30480.pdf
Hi Nic Great video. Iam attempting the repair for replacement of the diode but in the process dislodged the TPS 5460 IC and lost the little capacitor between the Diode and the IC. Do you know the value of the capacitor and also is pin 1 of the IC next to the electrolytic capacitor (outside of board) or near the diode (inside of board) Thanks
Missing cap is 0.1uF Size 0402 Capacitor. iFixit has a hi-res image of the amp board you can look at for the IC orientation; guide-images.cdn.ifixit.com/igi/HAevXlZ2TSDyaNbF.full?pk_vid=401fefe26cef0d10168279781925164f

Silly question about that single teeny capacitor to the side of the diode…it looks like I knocked it off at some point during my attempted repair; what are the chances it will work without it? Probably the better question is do you happen to know the part number?
I don't know what will happen without it, I'd guess it probably won't work somehow and I wouldn't try it on my own homepod to find out without knowing it's role. That said I pulled the same capacitor off a parts board and it measures as 110nF / 0.11uF with my cheap multimeter (so probably a 0.1uF capacitor) and is 1mm in length. I'm unsure of any other details of that part unfortunately EDIT: I've since tested removing this capacitor and the homepod will indeed NOT power on without it!
@@Lefarr I tried pulling these off two boards now for you to be sure and unfortunately they are not registering on my multimeter, perhaps they are smaller than my meter can measure at 20nF or less?
The master of the Homepod has done it again! Excellent work and great explanation. No pressure but, by any chance do you have anything on the Minus/Plus blinking issue in the Homepod? Mine cannot be reset and only the LEDS for minus/plus keep on blinking. Do I need to get a new motherboard or is there anyone who can reprogram the EEPROM in the motherboard? Thank you as always! :)
Not yet :( I have some more testing to do between good vs bad logic boards in case it’s actually a hardware issue. Otherwise I will keep trying to publicize the issue and offer remote access to a setup with a HomePod wired into a computer via usb to crack it or maybe one day get smart enough to figure it out myself
