Wood Turned Finger Jointed Bowl

  • I have wanted to wood turn a bowl from a finger jointed box. I picked out a piece of walnut and a piece of cherry. I milled each piece to the same dimension. I then made segments for a ring from these two pieces. I milled the end of each segment on the CNC router, to form a finger joint between each segment in the ring. I attached a bottom to the bowl by cutting a circle into the end of the ring to receive a round segmented bottom. I turned all of this on the lathe to the form finished bowl.

Frank, I am a 23 year old Mexican girl who just finished majoring in International Relations I don't even know what I'm doing here but I love your videos and I find them inspired. Every time I feel bad or have panic attacks I come here and I instantly feel much better. I wish I had the time to learn a little bit about wood working and turning.

Frank, my favorite part about your videos is that you bridge the gap between traditional and modern craftsmanship. On your segment jig, couldn't you set your master wedge, tighten both arms, remove one arm, 1st cut all segments, reposition the missing arm, remove the other arm, and finally do the 2nd cut on all the wedges? This would preserve the nice center point.

To get your bottom disc to come to a point next time maybe make the total angle more than 360 degrees instead of under 360, as in set your sled to be 22.6 or 22.55 instead of (accidentally) 22.45. that way, when you go to sand the discs flat, the centre point wont be the excess material, the edges will.

Frank, it makes for very interesting looking bowl. Plus being cherry and walnut, which are very compatible woods as far as wood shrinkage, and the finger type joints makes it mechanical long grain to long grain will make a very sturdy bowl. A trick a fellow wood worker gave me once, when you want to glue a scrap for turning is to apply glue to both parts and put a sheet of news paper in-between, when your done turning, use a sharp chisel to separate scrap for the work piece , it will come off clean with out grain tear out. Works rather well.
