CARVED DUCK WALKING STICK

- Hello and welcome to the channel! Today we are carving a wooden duck walking stick. I had a scrap 1x5" piece of wood so I cut it into 3, 7" pieces and laminated them to create a block to carve into the duck head. Using hand tools and rotary carving, the duck head took shape. I attached it to the main shaft and inserted a red liner material to add a transition piece.
Finished with Teak oil and some coats of lacquer for protection. The grain really popped and I think it turned out to a nice walking stick.
Let me know what you think and thanks for watching.
Nice Job Jason, the wood really popped when the oil was applied, I'm in the process of trying to carve a Grey Heron onto a stick head, but I'm going to paint mine... thanks for sharing cheers
Thank you! Yes, I was thinking of painting this one but once I saw the grain, I couldn’t bring myself to cover over it… good luck with your project
Morning from Scotland Jason you have honestly taken your sticks to a new level. If that was possible easy instructions and a pleasure to watch. 👌🏴
Thank you very much! I did enjoy making this duck… found it to be a fun carving
Happened upon one of your great videos today and wanted to say Thanks! Especially love the pic of Morro Rock! I have spent a good bit of time there.
Thanks for watching! I appreciate the support
🤝👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Great job
Thank you!
Beautiful work. Where did you find the wooden handle rasp tool you use for shaping?
Thanks, that is a microplane. Got it at a local woodworking store, and I built the wooden handle from some cedar I had around. The plane can be mounted in a hacksaw frame but I find I like my setup better for carving
Наверное это больше похоже на лебедя чем на утку. Но это не суть важно, получилось великолепно
I can see that, but I still think it’s a duck! Thanks for watching!
Great job Jason, loved every second of it. You make me feel like I can even make one!
Thanks!! And I believe you could make one... maybe I should make up a local event for those interested... something to think about! Always great to hear from you!
Very nice cane Jason, classie and tasteful. I dont know what region your in but here in Alberta We have saskatoon berry bush, there quite bendy and hard with a tight grain. They can get to be about 5" in diamiter so lots of room to releaf in, and there really tough chip resistent sticks. Saskatoon wood has become my favorite caine wood
Nice, I'm over here in Montreal. Haven't seen that wood here however
@@JasonHedrich I have a Saskatoon bush in my yard but ive already taken the mature stocks, so it will take years now for more. West of Grand Prairre they grow wild, so if you're ever out here thats a good place to get them.
@@markseehawer3762 thanks, I will keep it in mind if I'm ever out that way!
Ave you got template 😊
Unfortunately I make each design on the fly… no templates, I just draw them as I go along
Great job! The duck is really really nice. I never tire of watching your videos, they're awesome!
Thank you very much! Nice to hear… yes, this one came out great. I try and keep the videos coming at a regular pace!
Where is the link to where u sell those?
I don’t have a store or site, but I can do custom orders if you like. Write to me at jhedrich73@gmail.com and we can discuss it
