    Great videos. Please do more. And you’re good at product reviews/ placement. I need to refinish our C22. These videos are helpful.

    Fairwinds and following seas. I hope you’re fine satisfaction and enjoyment in your new boat.

      I'm loving every minute of it. A wiser sailor than me told me I'd better fall in love with working on my boat rather than just sailing it, and that's exactly what I've done

    Nice work. My salvaged Catalina 22 has its boards and rails, but they were rough. I was fairing and filling deck voids with epoxy, and I just used excess mix to coat the old wood. Same with excess deck paint. Doesn’t look great but passes muster, and keeps it dry now for the 9 months it’s been back in the water sailing. I love sapele, but may just get a sheet of starboard when I replace them. Nice work, and thanks for the inspiration to get back to mine one day soon.

      Congratulations! The series is obviously limited and I'm way way way behind on editing and releasing videos, but if you ever have any questions, let me know and we can be the blind leading the blind! Good luck and fair winds.

    The top weatherboard is supposed to overlap the boards by at least 1/2” or you’ll have water inside when it rains

    • @petesfleet640

      I haven't had that issue yet but I'm sure I'll run into that sooner or later

      The hatch boards are also supposed to overlap (ship lap) to keep water out.

    On my companionway hatches they have a 45 degree bevel between the boards with an opposite bevel on the top board so they interlock. Cool channel. Keep going! Looking forward to seeing more videos! Did you know you have a fleet of C22's out by you? Look up Fleet 77 out of Fort Walton Yacht Club.

      I considered doing it that way, but figured I'd try my luck this way. If I have to add weather stripping in the future, I might but for now it works great.

    Looks good. If it was me doing the work I would have use Starboard to make the door pieces and the weatherboard. The other option would be tinted plexiglass for extra light in the cabin.

    • @petesfleet640
      @petesfleet640  2 роки тому +1

      That is obviously a great idea. Not as cost effective, which is clearly the theme. Plus I have always been a fan of beautiful brightwork on boats, and while this is very crude, it's much closer to brightwork than plastic. PLUS a stark white plastic would really accentuate how badly I need to paint the topside of this boat!

      @@petesfleet640 I get it. I was just saying what I would have done. I like good looking boats as well, but my wallet and I like low maintenance boats even more. I'd rather spend a bit more up front and never have to worry about it again than have to do more maintenance.

    I planned some well worn 45 year old teak down flat, and sanded some other pieces.. applied teak oil. It looks good. ...I don't think it made it a year before it was gray again. Of course there's the gray-teak crew that is just totally fine with awful looking teak but, I'd rather have something synthetic than let it get all bleached out.

    Good job I just bought a 1982 Catalina 22 ft. Sailboat missing hatch boards I would appreciate the measurements for the hatch boards.

    • @petesfleet640
      @petesfleet640  2 роки тому

      I'm happy to take some rough measurements, but because I built the rails myself and routed them myself, they're not consistent, they don't match on each side, etc. I don't think it would be what you want. If I were you I would either use cardboard to template like I did, or maybe look for an original set to take measurements from. Good luck!

  • @deaconallan
    @deaconallan 2 роки тому

    Realizing that I am watching this almost 9 months after the fact, so the issue may have been corrected. On each hatch board there should be a small lip on bottom of each board to overlap the lower board, that way there will be no water intrusion in really heavy rainstorms.

      That's a consideration for sure... or at the very least re-sealing these. I got a few spare windows from the C-22 graveyard where I got this boat, but for the most part, the windows that are there, with no cracks, little to no leaking. Aesthetically I would love to have brand new clear windows, but in the mean time, there's no functional need. I'm first doing functional, then comfort, then aesthetics. And trying to do it all on the very very cheap!
