DO IT
Do it
Hey you saw my comment on the last vid 🔥
One only 😂
Do it
As a Midwesterner myself, it's amazing how many old cars these guys find with little to no rust!
We see PLENTY with rust, we just pass on them! Lol
yep.to the $ power.@@WDDetailing
I think these old G Wagons look so much better than the new ones.
agree, you are totally right
The highlighted 55 is the speed limit that used to be 55mph and car companies put a little dash there to remind you. The national speed limit was 55 MPH for some time, and was repealed in 1995.
Merry Christmas guys!
yes it was crazy government control , the beginnings of our lock downs
We need to return to the national 55 speed limit, saves fuel and lives.....................
It was set at 55 for fuel economy reasons as well. It coincided with the oil crisis.
The more you know! I was born in 1995 so that's probably why i've never heard of that.. -Brent
I remember that. Wow, I sure do feel really old now. That was so long ago.
I can’t believe it fired right up! The mat in the back was pulled up to expose the fuel sending unit… Which just tells the fuel gauge how much fuel is in the tank, they must’ve been trying to trouble shoot the fuel issue. You guys made the OGwagen shine, and the donation to toys for tots is a light in the world!
We’ve been using these in the Greek Military for the last 35 years. I drove it almost daily for the last 5 months . They’ll never die . You can fill it with frying oil and it will still run . Awesome for off roading but the non turbo ones are slow .
that's so cool! thanks for the info haha
That's true for the ones with diesel engines, but this particular one is gasoline-powered. I wouldn't try running it on frying oil...
What a fun day! My grandson and I were at Dieter's looking at another project when you guys pulled up with desires for the G-Wagon. We both enjoyed talking to you 2 about cars.
Those G-wagons are totally not worth the money they are asking. Compare to an old Japanese SUV!
Okay, guys, wonderful! Here are some details; 1979-1987: 230e (GE 230/ W460/W461); 84 HP-4Cyl.
1979-1985 : 240diesel GD240-the really really slow one- 72 HP 4cyl. 1979-1989 : 280GE- The one you guys cleaned up, 136 HP-6cyl. 1979-1991 : 300GD (diesel)-still slow, i had one (also from 1983); 88HP- 5cyl.
Typically 1983; the rear headlights, coming from Mercedes ' commercial/van line. The olive green exterior colour and somewhat dull and spartan lightbrown interior and flatcoloured seats suspect it's got the same specs as the military versions, in particular the ones for the Canadian Army, although they were never with this engine, due to the fact that only military versions were convertibles. Later models were issued as beautiful "Cabriolets", when the G Wagon finally shook off its "hunter/soldier " image and eventually became civilized. Those gears in the transfer box ? SA; Street/ All- all wheel drive on concrete. S; street - rear wheel drive. and then again SA ( upper right corner)- the position to get ready to put it to N(eutral) to GA ( In German "Gelande") -Terrain/All wheel drive- also called "tractor position" -divides your gears in half- 50% ratio》 be careful with that one! Engage preferably when stopped. It was said the G didn't need clutching to change positions on the transfer box, although i wouldn't advice it. Those two "buttons" on the side are actually the differential locks for respectively the front and rear axles. !!Don't ever use them on concrete roads!! Engage them only beforehand on the roughest of terrains (vulcanos/ deep mud/big rocks etc), and only at very low speed. These aren't to be toyed around with!. Lovely truck, but a serious guzzler...😉Merry Christmas🎅 and a happy New year 😃👍👍
Thank you. Excellent explanation!
Funny bit, in 80s they sold everything or gave for free or some deal to force india (known as Bajaj tempo then), force continued sporadically making these cars.
Currently updated model is being sold for 20,000 pounds as force Gurkha.
When I was in the military (it's mandatory here in Switzerland) we drove these all the time. The ones the Swiss Army has seem to be bit longer, because in the back they have benches on the side where 3 soldiers fit easily on each side. Great job!
This car is a dream of mine. Love these. Prefer the older ones for sure. Great video as always! Thank you 😊
That is some serious cash right there, that old G Wagon will sell and there are some hard core G Wagon fans. I have a friend who is one his Dad who passed away 10 years ago was a G Wagon fanatic anyways showed him this video and he lost his mind he loved the paint and the fact that it started right up after replacing the fuel line and pump he said YUP that is a G wagon for ya nothing stops them!
Definitely prefer this vintage model to all the douchery of the newer ones. These are the ones that made people want the new ones. Which are far less capable of road.
Back in the eighties you saw this and knew it was serious. Lived in the mountains in southern California and had a few of these running around.
The new and newer ones are still very capable off road. They now all have all wheel drive wich you can switch to 4 wheel drive by locking the certer differential. They also have rear and front locking diffs, and have had them for decades. Yeah, they have "douchey" drivers who buy them for status symbols and NEVER take them any where near dirt. But, having driven one off road, they are magic in the dirt. And WAY more power than these old and slow ones.
2.8 liter DOHC inline six engine, same as in the 280SE sedans. The 55 was highlighted because the Federal standard speed limit was 55 back when this was made. (It was a Jimmy Carter era law, which slowly went away when the law was changed to allow states to choose their own speed limits)
Precisely correct.
Not dohc, sohc
55 saves lives. lol
Actually Nixon signed the federal highway safety act
In the midst of the oil crisis, Richard Nixon signed The Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act, which capped the speed limit on all roads to 55 mph.
Cool G-Wagen! Used by the Swedish military and in some cases the Swedish police ER/search diving team with a boat trailer hooked to the vehicle. A very good car, very competent vehicle in practical every way! Almost instructable and simple to fix.
Großartige Arbeit, das ist ein schöner Mercedes für das Gelände, das Blech von diesen
G Modellen ist dicker als üblich keine Angst also das es durchrostet. Das ist Qualität und gleich angesprungen
Awesome job and Happy Holidays! Warms the heart to see you giving back
I really like that G-wagon. I'm an Army brat, so figures i'd like a military looking vehicle! Great job guys!!!
The Greek military service was provided with a bunch of these. Both as 240GD, which featured a 2.3 liter SOHC indirect-injection diesel inline-4, making 69 horsepower, and as 290GD, a small utility truck powered by a 2.8 liter SOHC diesel inline-5 with 97 horsepower. The second one is mentioned as "The Canadian Girl" because we greeks think trucks like these exist in Canada. Also, the Greek automobile company was manufacturing these vehicles under the license of Mercedes-Benz for the usage of the country's military service
Erdogan Mercedes.
Hello WD Detailing, Merry Christmas🎉💙! Hey WD Detailing! I'm sorry.... Happy Holidays next sunday new video tomorrow wash here😊!!! Wow, amazing vehicles 100% over there like's too channel👍🏆!!!
¡gREat find you guys!!!
You have yourselves a:
First Generation Geländewagen 1979-2018; 3dr; SWB; L6/Gasoline
1983 W460, 280ge
2.8 liter / 16; 156hp
K-jetronic ignition: 1973-1995
0-100km/h in 14 seconds…
I have its younger cousin:
1987 280ge. The only difference is that mine is 4speed 4x4 and yours is Automatic…
Let me know if you ever want to brake the routine and go do some Caribbean Detailing in the Dominican Republic 😂🌴!
I LOVE WHAT YOU DO, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU TAKE CARE OF KIDS…
God bless you…You are loved !!!👍🏼
Merry Christmas Mike, RJ & Brent! Nice reset of 40 years on this Mercedes. Thanks for WD’s great production value videos in 23’ and look forward to the last of this year.
We're using these in the Danish army as well, and have been for God knows how long. They seem to run no matter what. My neighbour had one of these for like 30 odd years and it never broke down on him. It's an absolute unit.
Wow. I want that!!!
This thing is a bonafide survivor. I hope whoever ends up with it cherishes and cares for it.
One may say the eternal mystery of the world is its comprehensibility.
when i watch you restore old school cars to perfection.... the excitement, i get is far far better than Gold
That g wagon is absolutely beautiful. I will definitely take an old one over the new one without a doubt
These are timeless and that green! 😮💨😍
Happy holidays to all the WD detailing crew!
Original German masterpiece the older is much more desirable than the new. Great vlog gents.
I owned the civilian model many years ago with the same engine. The second gear lever is used for the 4wd: idle 2wd(rear), then neutral, then 4 wd and finally 4wd low gears. The two little round throttle on the left side are for front and rear differential lock.
In the further models, i think from 1992, the differential look were placed in the cockpit with the addition of an elettrical control and a third central differential look.
Sorry for my bad english
David
Well done on the detail and thank you for your generosity with Toys for Tots. Semper Fi.
Thank you! & of course. Anything for the kids
I saw a Bentley Convertible in this Bundeswehr colourway in London once. And the green was matte, too. - This Mercedes G is from the days when it was just like the LR Defender 90. Really cool vehicle. Nice you cleaned it now
Hey Boys,
Congratulations on a successful year and I have to say that was one of the coolest cars you have worked on AND it turned out awesome AND fired up with a seemingly small amount of work on your part!!! Very cool seeing you guys take it for a drive. All in all I think its a pretty sharp looking car.
You donating to the kids at the end is yet another example of what separates you guys from others. Good dudes all. Merry Christmas and a very happy new year to you all!\

You make me feel old. I have an identical colour 1982 G-Wagon that I bought 27 years ago, although mine is 5 door and right-hand-drive and it hasn't been polished in 27 years. Around here they call it patina. We use it on the farm to haul stones, pull stumps and collect house guests. The only negative is at the fuel station. The fill up will say $125 (NZ) and the odometer says it went 125 miles, a dollar a mile. And as for the red 55 mph, I just graduated college when OPEC reduced the petroleum supply creating a shortage that resulted in mile-long lines to fill up the tank. Knowing a national speed limit was coming, I decided to buy new tires and take the last grand tour of America, from Baltimore to San Francisco, 10,000 miles in one month;zig-zagging north to south once I hit the Rockies, most of it four wheel drifting on empty roads, with the speedometer buried in three digit territory (miles not km). When the 55 limit came in, America's love affair with speed was changed forever. But back to the g wagon. It has a k-jetronic fuel injection that is easy to work on once you understand it. No computers, no sensors that light up like a Christmas tree. If a solar burst ever destroys the digital universe, the g wagon will keep on running until 125 miles later you need to fill up at the computerized gas station. In an offroad endurance trial, it will be the last 4WD to get stuck. While the engine is gutless (a 2.8 engine pulling a 2 ton brick), in 4WD, centre, front and rear diffs locked and in lower case it will pull stumps, and has hauled two tons of stone up a 45% dirt slope with all the tires wrapped with real chains, not tire chains. It will keep going until they stop selling fuel. One of the greatest vehicles ever made, as long as you keep your eyes closed at the fuel station.
The final results are great 👍👍
Keep going with the NSX
As a weekend warrior with my car for the last five years , I would love to see a segment where you show us the products you use on these cars as you detail them 🙏🏼
Love what you have done to the w460 wolf , it’s in amazing condition, very original, very beautiful, just ticks all the boxes
Well done lads
Nice one
Good luck
German here. This isn‘t a wolf.
Well done to you boys on the Gwagon and a special well done for the toys for tots. Happy Christmas to you and your family crack on
Early G’s are uber cool, much better than the new ones
The two buttons / levers are the front and rear differential locks. G’s are virtually unstoppable off road, their nearest competitor is the also uber cool Lada Niva.
The Difference after Polish is Insane! 🔥💪
I bet a certain NSX would come back to life too :)

A merry Christmas to all of you, I'm from Brazil and I love watching the videos, I really enjoy your work, and a happy new year too, we're together.
I love watching your videos I look forward to each one that you do and that was so nice of you to do that for the kids 😁 have a great Christmas
Transfer case knob: S - Strasse (street), SA - Strassenallrad (street all-wheel drive), N - Neutral, GA - Geländeallrad (off-road all-wheel drive). It's rear-wheel drive in S mode. In GA mode, it's all-wheel drive with a lower gear ratio. The other knobs can be pulled to lock the differentials. Drove those things in the Swiss military, the had just one knob for the diffs.
Just like in my '88 300zx, the 55 mph is highlighted because that used to be the national speed limit! Pretty crazy to think it was regulated to that degree
Well done. Always love to see your work!
Thank you!
Un grand merci à vous pour cette belle année 2023 passé ensemble. Joyeux Noël 🎄🎅 et rendez-vous en 2024.
The old G Classes were built for military. Did you know that the Austrian company built exactly the samemodel
Amazing job, still a great looking vehicle 40 years later. S Strasse (Road RWD) SA Strasse Allrad (Road AWD) N Neutral GA Gelande Allrad (Offroad AWD) ...Levers for diff locks for front and rear axles when in GA mode....Used one in the late 1980s, stationary and clutch depressed to shift between modes was the way I was taught. From when Mercedes engineered vehicles with the best quality and reliability imaginable.
Quite like the Old G Wagon first time I have seen one, Great video Guys 👍
Wow you guys are really the best. After watching the video and seeing you guys paying it forward with the toys for tots! Very classy. Love the channel and merry Christmas see you guys soon!
Cleanest car you’ve guys detailed and managed to make it look like it wasn’t cleaned and gave it life again after the detail. If that makes sense 😂🔥🔥
Nice job guys!
Looking forward to more in '24. Merry Christmas, guys!!
Merry Christmas guys. Wishing you all the best in 2024.
The leather floor covering is just one of the smaller detail as to why I want one of these. Great video
Great job! Best vehicle yet.
Siiiiiiick I’m so glad it started after changing some parts!
Had a similar issue with land cruiser plastic mats being folded and cracking. Found the easiest way to save them is to heat them up as much as possible with a steamer and slowly start to unfold whilst continously steaming them. Heat gun doesn't work makes them stretch and leaves discoloration where you heated them.
I see that conquest in the back can’t wait for that to be detailed 😮that was my first car want another one but it might be hard getting parts now😳
Boys! Y'all are a blessing.
Very interested in your cleaning solutions and the other products you use
Great work on the car and Toys for Tots drive!! Merry Christmas!
Awesome job❤️🇨🇦
Looks great WD! 🔥💚
S = Straße
SA = Straßenallrad
N = Neutral
GA = Geländeallrad
Have a great holiday!!! The tots will love the toys!!!
It’s amazing how well those old Mercedes clean up that’s true well-built craftsmanship
I drove a Steyr/Daimler/Puch in the former Yugoslavian army back in 1986. It had a Mrecedes 300D engine with five cylinders and a five speed gearbox. It was an extended version with five doors. Great car, but limited to 135 km/h. Then it was produced for military purposes in Graz, Austria. What you're washing is a 2746cc petrol engine with six cylinders in a row
Greetings from the UK, love watching your vids, and great work on the G-Wagon, have a good Xmas break.
Way to go guys, Happy Holidays 😊👍
There’s supposed to be a data plate/label for the transfer gear shifter4H-2H & 4H-N-2L. The two little push/pull knobs are front & rear differential locks.
My favourite (UK) car from this channel to date.
This is a SWB short wheel base 3 door Cabrio ! So cool.
2 doors in front and third is trunk door 🫡
Cool vehicle. Merry Christmas guys.
You guys are the baddest detailers on planet earth.
Take that over a new one any day, love the vids cant wait for the NSX!
That G-Wagon looks very clean and rust free for a vehicle kept in a tent for 10yrs. A beautiful vehicle and much better than the new gin palace “G Class” stuff they are knocking out now. Well done on the toys for tots donations as well, fair play to you guys for that 😃
Please film trabant 601😊
The older G-wagons are absolute beasts. Barebones and yes, built like a tank. Awesome find. Prefer the older ones, easily
I believe there are much more wheels than doors. The industrial vehicles, such as truck and lorries, have much more wheels, usually 8 or even 12 while only have 2 doors
What a beautiful car and job on it.
This is my favorite. So nice.
I prefer the older look. Looks like something you'd see in SnowRunner.
Thanks for all the videos this year! (I loved the G-Wagen, prefer the "Utilitarian" version to the "Record Producer/Influencer/Soft Roader" version. Merry Christmas from the UK.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Thanks for all the great vids! Take care!
The car detailing is so great but you guys are so cool and that's wonderful. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. 🎉😊
That was a great idea with the toys donation! Nice 🎄🎅🏻
Back in the day, 55 was the speed limit on highways and interstate roads. The highlighted 55 was a reminder not to speed.
In 1974, the National Speed Limit was reduced to 55 mph in response to the oil crises. Sammy Hagar wrote that famous song "I Cant Drive 55" in 1984.
The G Wagon you have was originally built in 1979.
From 1974-ish on all vehicles built in or built for and imported to America had 55 highlighted on speedometers. This was a way to remind motorists that saving gas was paramount. That is why the 55 is highlighted in orange on your example.
You guys have done great and come so far. I subscribed when you only had 10k subs. My favorite detailing channels then were The Detail Geek and Stauffers Garage. Now you guys are my favorite by far. Merry Christmas!
Wow, that's such an honor. Thank you for supporting us for SO long
That's my dude ...he's got a nice Mercedes collection i bought a 1995 s500 coupe from him a few years ago...super cool dude
The 55 on the speedo was highlighted because back in the day, that was the speed limit on most highways.
To all are soldier's over seas merry Christmas and a happy new year
Excellent job!! Congratulations!!!
EXCELLENT JOB WELL DONE 👏 ✔️ 👍
This G - wagon is in the nicest condition, i have seen.
Since i subscribed to your Channel.
Beautiful work guys. I absolutely love your videos ❤❤❤❤
The federal speed limit in the late 1970s and early 1980s was 55 mph. A lot of times car manufacturers indicated and highlighted the 55 mph on the speedometers.
I’d be willing to bet weather tech could put a new weatherproof floorboard in that G wagon. I know it would be nice to have our original stuff but that thing is old. Good luck enjoy I Enjoy the videos.👍😎
